While the world anticipates Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards 2017 this evening, the Push Square forum members have already spoken, declaring Horizon: Zero Dawn to be their Game of the Year. After 250 posts as part of a typically epic thread coordinated by themcnoisy with assistance from KratosMD, Guerrilla Games’ action-heavy role-playing release took top honours by scooping the Platinum gong.
But it was a close run contest, with Persona 5 taking the Gold award and NieR: Automata settling for Silver. Bronze was a three-way tie, with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Yakuza 0, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard duking it out. All incredible games, of course, and equally deserving of their success, so well done to every title.
Elsewhere, publisher of the year went to Sony with the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn, as well as various other noteworthy titles like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Nioh, Farpoint, and Everybody’s Golf. SEGA took second place with its retro revival Sonic Mania and the superb Yakuza 0, while Ninja Theory received deserved recognition for its “AAA indie” strategy with the thought-provoking Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
And in less optimistic news, Mass Effect: Andromeda was forced to take the walk of shame, as it scooped up the biggest disappointment of the year. You can read through the thread in its entirety through here. Thanks as always to themcnoisy and KratosMD for putting this together, and every community member who visited the forums to participate. And don’t worry if you think our Game of the Year coverage is over, work is already underway on our staff list, and it’ll be going live throughout the Christmas holiday.

After I process my backlog, Nier: Automata is at the top of my wishlist for the system. I'll probably also pick up H:ZD at some point when the GotY version dips into the $30 range.
really good game but strangely yakuza 0 is my fave. it is strange because i didnt even knew i eant a game like that up until the point i played it. also cried at multiple points including the credits so 10/10
Just an outstanding year for gaming as a whole.
Congratulations Horizon Zero Dawn, not just my GOTY but also my game of the generation.
Well deserved!!! HZD is amazing and my personal GoTY.
A big hand to @themcnoisy and @KratosMD for putting on the vote yet again.
"declaring Horizon: Zero Dawn to be their Game of the Year."
For the record, and for accuracy, it should read "declaring Horizon: Zero Dawn to be their Playstation Game of the Year."
The forum was very specific about the Playstation part.
Thought it should be in there to avoid any confusion and unwarranted debate.
Persona 5 is my GOTY, but Horizon is a well deserved winner.
Again thanks to @themcnoisy and @KratosMD for putting this together.
@rjejr In all honesty though, having played both Zelda and Mario I don't think either would be GOTY worthy- not this year anyway. PlayStation has had an incredible year.
Great list everyone!
I put in 100 hours between the base game and The Frozen Wilds . I absolutely loved every minute of this game . I said this before in a comment that Horizon Zero Dawn is my game of this generation (so far) and is in my top 3 of fav games all time . Hopefully HZD can win big tonight =)
Tbh I barely played 2017 games on PS4, except Lost Legacy and Future Tone. Crash too but that is not exactly 2017.
My GOTY of course goes to Mario Odyssey, but I have gems in the Sony backlog:
Horizon
Persona 5
Nier Automata
The Evil Within 2
I missed out on this vote. But HZD is a very worthy winner. I would have gone Nier: Automata - one of the greatest games I've ever played, but HZD was certainly my second. Nothing else came close in my opinion.
@rjejr You have my vote for most pedantic post of the year. You know it's a PlayStation site, right? Chill out.
@LieutenantFatman no I think it was a fair point. Nintendo have put out some world beaters this year, and its great to see them acknowledged on here.
Great contest, great result, I can completely get behind this outcome. Horizon was, and is, excellent. Very few have come close to that level of consistent quality and achievement this year.
Can't wait to see what they do with the sequel.
@rjejr lol, the debate wouldnt stop either way.
Thanks for all the posts Pushsquare heads, thanks for the support PushSquare team.
Now all thats left is to grab a copy of Nier Automata and drink snowballs to bring in the new year.
2017 what a year! Happy Christmas everyone!
Haven't played any of them, yet I find myself agreeing with the results.
@oatmealwarrior92 Ninty will get most awards, no doubt. Happens every year (if memory serves).
Fantastic!I put Horizon first and Persona second so real pleased about this.I have put over 200 hours between both those games and had a blast with both.
I played the demo of Nier before the game was released but never got round to buying it...Will definitely pick it up in a sale
Cheers to the team for your hard work!
@rjejr Horizon would have won whatever the platform anyway!
I might have said it before on the forum, but the full list is just so good. I've bookmarked the page, so I can keep track of what 2017 games I still need to catch up on.
Great job, organizing team!
@Ralizah @fuzzy833
Both great games, but I personally gave the edge to NieR Automata, although I can’t argue the greatness of HZD. A truly transcendent game. It doesn’t do anything startlingly unique, but it does what it does so completely and utterly top notch that it feels like a trailblazer. The level of polish and flair it has is most impressive.
I was really impressed with the attention to detail in Horizon, I picked up on a few things where the developers went the extra distance to make the world feel that much more alive and believable and I really appreciated that dedication.
The plot and Aloy's journey of discovery is very entertaining as well and has some fun surprises and a few nice twists. Overall it exceeded my expectations. Well deserving of the GOTY award, well voted everyone.
@Kidfried Well not if it was a MS only poll or a Nitnedo only poll it wouldn't. And we'll see what happens in a few hours. My son and I had a long discussion over dinner and we're still torn between Zelda and H:ZD. These polls should all take place 5 years later like hall of fame voting so we have time to think about it.
@LieutenantFatman It's a VIDEO GAME site discussing VIDEO GAMES. Or did you not see the Switch article yesterday?
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/12/sony_we_cant_ignore_the_nintendo_switch
Oh, and there's also that GA thing tonight that has gotten a few articles the past few days as well. Or do you think the timing of this article is simply a coincidence?
And I'm not the one wrote this in the polls forum.
Hey guys! Friendly reminder that GOTY 2017 ends tomorrow night, so if you still want to place your votes on which five PlayStation games that are your GOTY then please do so until then!
Definitely best PS game of the year for me, one of the few that I played through to 100% completion. Very glad to see RE7 in top honors as well.
@rjejr I agree, and the only reason RE7 gets a pass even though it was multi-platform is that it was a PSVR exclusive.
I just managed to secure from Santa himself a copy of Yakuza 0 as a christmas gift. I'm eager to play it since launch day, as it seems like the perfect entry point in the saga, and a very, very good game in itself.
Nier automata is another one I need to buy very soon. I really liked the first Nier (althought it didn't strike me down as the ultimate mastepiece of all time that some people describe to me), and I found the demo very cool.
On the opposite, I just can't manage to hype myself for Horizon. It really seems to be a good game, but I don't know. I don't feel the need to play it ASAP, like Yakuza 0 and Nier Automata. Oh, and Persona 5, too, comes first.
@themcnoisy @KratosMD Thanks for doing this!
@Fight_Teza_Fight I've only played an hour of H:ZD but I've always considered it to be my GOTY. After playing Zelda though it will have to prove itself to me. Young Aloy jumping straight up and down in front of a small pile of rocks b/c you couldn't jump up on them isn't off to a good start.
As I just said above in post #27 though, the way I read the wording as PlayStation games in the forum, so I think it should be included here. You dont' have a "Black Miss America" Pageant and then calmly announce the winner as "Miss America" and nonchalantly leave out the "Black" part. Well maybe you do, but I'd call them on that as well. I'm a stickler for details.

You got to love Nintendo fans.
Glad that Horizon won! It's my GotY for sure. Runners up are Mario Rabbids, Mario Odyssey, Hollow Knight, and Breath of the Wild.
All of those are great, but HZD actually broke into my all-time top 5.
Whoa, Mass Effect Andromeda got Disappointment of the Year? I wouldn't go that far! I'm playing it right now, and really enjoying it...it's the kind of game that makes me jump outta bed at 3a to play a few hours before working at 8a everyday. I FEEL SO YOUNG AGAIN.
I dont know...ive been struggling to stay invested in The HZD. Its way over rated. Of course im on my 1st playthrough , i barely made it to Meridian and its on hard difficulty.
@rjejr Wow, the man who wrote the article was Sammy about the stuff we have been doing in the forums and it coincided with the goty awards show tonight. Nothing dodgy about that it is December after all. Not that whatever is named goty later matters as frickin fallout shippin 4 won it a few years ago and that game was definitely not goty in many gamers eyes. The fact pubg is up for running is a complete joke also.
The fact we got a brilliant article on the thread shows that PushSquare is a great place for gamers to chat about our favourite hobby and our opinion is valued. If your so pedantic about an article header maybe I could point out that only 1 hour in HZD you have experienced bugger all the game has to offer. But I wont do that as Im in a good mood. Thanks for taking part but I dont understand why you go all comment nazi when you are in essence one of us?
@rjejr We maybe a Video game site but we are focus on Playstation games here. You want Nintendo well Nintendolife is that way. Now please stop the trolling and derailment of the comment section. Thank you.
Horizon is a great game. It gets no hate from me for winning. My personal favorite this year is Nier Automata. It was just untouchable.
@Tasuki @themcnoisy @Kidfried @LieutenantFatman @Fight_Teza_Fight
So do I still have to explain it to you guys?
@Tasuki Please explain to me how pointing out something, a correction from the forum, is either trolling or derailment? I posted the exact sentence, THE EXACT SENTENCE, from the forum thread that Sammy based the article on, only he left out 1 word, 1 very important word, and I pointed that out to him.
Here's the sentence, from the forum, middle of page 8, Playstation is bold so you can't miss it if you go there.
"Hey guys! Friendly reminder that GOTY 2017 ends tomorrow night, so if you still want to place your votes on which five PlayStation games that are your GOTY then please do so until then!"
If the forum thread was for Vita games and this article said PS4 games don't you think that would matter?
And I'm not the one derailing the thread. I made 1 post, one, and 5 people replied to me, some nicer than others. If you feel the need to go after somebody how about the guy who wrote this - "You have my vote for most pedantic post of the year. You know it's a PlayStation site, right?" - That's a personal attack. Isn't one of your responsibilities as moderator to go after people making personal attacks? I didn't insult anyone did I? I didn't go after anyone did I? No, if anything you should be going after anyone attacking me, that's supposed to be your job, not attacking people who you disagree with.
Go read the comments, most agreed with me, one guy attacked me, so I think it's obvious who the troublemaker is, and it isn't me. When I start attacking people, insulting people, cursing, by all means come and let me know. Until then, do your job and police the ones who are making the personal attacks on me, there's no call for that. I'd rather you didn't, I can take care of myself, but if you really feel the need to get involved and do something, at least do the right thing, not the wrong thing.
@themcnoisy "shows that PushSquare is a great place for gamers to chat about our favourite hobby"
Well yeah, that's like saying a golf course is a great place to play golf, as long as you're a white man, no blacks or women allowed.
If it's such a great place to chat then why all the shade my way? If nobody is trying to be sneaky or hide anything then what is wrong with accuracy? Why write this in the forums - "Hey guys! Friendly reminder that GOTY 2017 ends tomorrow night, so if you still want to place your votes on which five PlayStation games that are your GOTY then please do so until then!"
I don't see why so many people here have an aversion to the truth?
And I wasn't talking about the header, I know how Sammy is with his "clicks", it's his site and it's a business so I get that, had that talk with Sammy years ago. I was talking about the first sentence in the article. The one that starts with tonight's GA.
"While the world anticipates Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards 2017 this evening, the Push Square forum members have already spoken, declaring Horizon: Zero Dawn to be their Game of the Year."
You can't tell me their is no connection between tonight's awards and this article when they are both in 1 sentence. The title is the title, but that sentence is very long, 1 more word wasn't going to make it any longer, just make it clearer about what the forum was all about, Playstation games.
Everybody on here is so overly protective and sensitivebyou'led think the world would end if somebody mentioned a non-Sony game. Despite the continued coverage of Switch and Xbox. Employees can write and say whatever they want, justify it however they want, but God forbid we say anything they don't agree with.
You know, it kind of is like a golf club.
"The fact pubg is up for running is a complete joke also."
Agreed, had it won I may have had to give up gaming.
@rjejr Take it easy man. You're making way too much fuzz about a small subject and are distracting from a very nice article on a great members' initiative. Take a step back and be the adult here.
The comparison with "black" miss America is in my eyes inappropriate. Push Square is not a place to talk about the politics of race, but I hope you understand that a game of the year platform is in a completely different realm as the ethnicities you allow on a golf course. Don't go that route, I ask you.
"PushSquare is a great place for gamers to chat", and that rings true. But that doesn't mean everything is appropriate everywhere all the time. And as such I will not further respond on the subject either.
@rjejr Well maybe people won't attack you if you didn't come here to start trouble? Ever think of that? You always come around here shoot your mouth off then when people call you out for it you want me to go after them? Yeah sorry it doesn't work that way.
If you have the urge to tell me how to mod feel free to use a contact form. Instead of calling me out.
This will be the last time this is brought up. Good day.
Nintendo's comeback kind of made Sony's success throughout 2017 - sales wise and software wise - a bit of a sidebar rather than the feature story. But, what a year it was. I bought Gravity Rush 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Gran Turismo Sport. Sega brought it with Yakuza and Sonic Mania and Capcom deserves praise for Resident Evil VII but Sony finally brought its 'A' game and delivered throughout the whole year. Very deserving of publisher of the year even if opened up to a non-PlayStation-specific poll.
@rjejr Theres nothing wrong with accuracy, its good. What you havent considered is we (as in the community) got an article written about the forums whilst Sammy was busy prepping for the GA. He wrote the article in double quick time. It doesnt matter if the content of the article is 100% on point as the links are there to follow.
We opened publisher of the year up to every company and nintendo wasnt even in the top 3 :/
I wonder if Nintendo controllers do have a Square button to Push
@themcnoisy "It doesnt matter if the content of the article is 100% on point as the links are there to follow."
It doesn't matter if the content is correct but it sure as heck seems to matter if somebody points out the correction, huh? The emperor has no clothes and all that.
Hey, I think what you guys did is a good thing, and I'm sorry if 1 or 2 bad apples spoils it for everyone, but I'm not that apple. And neither are you, sorry if I may have inadvertently lumped you in with some others earlier.
If next year you guys do a forum poll for "sports game of the year", and Madden wins over FIFA and MLB The Show, when Sammy writes an article about "GOTY winner Madden" I hope you remember sammy rushed the article when everyone wants to know why Madden beat out GoW. It's just 1 word right, 1 word doesn't matter.
Still sucks HZD didn't win anything.
