Were you enjoying Destiny 2? Well, content that you could previously play via the main game has been rendered inaccessible with the release of the Curse of Osiris this week. The title’s first expansion pack essentially retunes the Power Level required to tackle some of the title’s brutal endgame content, which means if you haven’t stumped up for the pricey expansion, you’re bang out of luck.
In addition to rendering the Platinum Trophy unobtainable, this also means that key gear like the Legend of Acrius exotic shotgun can no longer be collected either. The key differentiator here is that the content hasn’t always been locked behind a paywall; prior to the release of Curse of Osiris you need only own the base game to obtain it. That’s no longer the case.
It’s just another chink in Bungie’s armour, after it moved to calm growing fan unrest only last week. In even more damning news, our reviewer Robert Ramsey has been playing through the Curse of Osiris and, while we’ll leave you to read his review later today, it’s safe to say that the content isn’t really up to scratch – especially considering its significant price of entry.

You've gotta laugh, really.
@get2sammyb will they ever get this right? Do you think Destiny 2 is still even worth it at this point?
If you're affected by this, your first mistake was buying Destiny 2...
They've also still not released an HDR update for the PS4 Pro, even though they said it would arrive with the expansion. Still no update on when we'll get it, even though it seems it works great on Xbox platforms.
I voted with my wallet and didn’t buy. Never seen this before. At least not affecting me personally. I remember Dariusburst coming out at £44 and people complained I got it in a sale for £12 I think. 3000 levels now that’s value
What did the say they had a 10 year plan for Destiny or something?
Think they need to ditch Destiny and just make a new IP once there done with this one. They don't know what there doing with it.
So many reasons why I have avoided this like the plague. Destiny clearly showed future intentions and glad I avoided it.
It's like they shot themselves in the foot, and now they're just doing it again and again to see if they can make it hurt more this time.
Is this even allowed? You already paid for it and now they're locking it behind a paywall...
Its been the same since destiny 1. Expecting it change is the definition of insanity 😂😂
Hey, c'mon, there's still a couple weeks of 2017 left... plenty of time for other major Triple-A "games as a service" to screw everybody over before the inevitable fallout from the last couple months builds enough to make 2018 the resurgence of the single-player, story-driven experience... right? Right?!
Oh destiny/bungie how you have turned from light into darkness! No probs plenty of other free and full meaty games and new gadgets to dig into 😊
Plenty of FTP grindy games that lock content behind paywalls. I don't get why some people are willing to pay a premium price up front for something similar.
Supposedly Microsoft have been giving refunds on Destiny 2 because of this issue its against Microsofts and Sony terms of Service to lock trophies behind a paywall. They did it with Destiny 1 but never locked you away from so much content and you could still do all the end game content of vanilla Destiny and get all the trophies/achievements
So so glad I avoided this, they're treating their customers like idiots, surely they can only survive for so long pulling these sort of antics.
Are people really still surprised when Destiny expansion comes and raises the RPG stat requirements and invalidates past armor / weapon acquisitions?
I mean that is the whole game design? Basically grind until we decide you need you pay again so you can grind some more less frustratingly.
I had a lot of fun with the original Destiny between the frustrations but I'm so glad I've avoided this hot mess of a game. It's weird because with the Taken King and Rise of Iron it seemed like they had learned from a lot of these mistakes but now they're back to square one, I mean how can you render some elements of the base game unplayable so soon after launch?
Come on Bungie, don't be daft.
Sukkk it bungie. Glad i didn't buy dlc. I learned from d1 dlc experiences
@get2sammyb It's gotta be a mistake though, right? Surely? How can a dlc pack you DON'T buy influence a game you did, that makes no sense. Now if you do buy it and they raise the Plat requirements, well you bought it so that's on you.
Oh boy - it is like they have looked at themselves in the mirror, started to patch themselves up then ruined it by taking a running kick at their own nuts.
@rjejr I could be wrong but my understanding from what I have read is that if you install the base game, it will download the DLC anyway and patch the game.
I'm happy I don't support this, battlefront, or any other garbage practices of the modern gaming era.
@Rudy_Manchego @rjejr Because the DLC increases the level that you can achieve in the game, and they're re-tuned the endgame content to take that into account.
So if you only own the base game you can now never be powerful enough to play content that was previously part of the base game.
Yeah, i'm done with Bungie at this point. Locking heroic strikes behind DLC is a d*ck move. I know there's extra strikes due to Osiris, but i should still be able to play the vanilla strikes in heroic.
@RedMageLanakyn Yeah I have no idea what you're talking about in post #25, but it sounds wrong.
@get2sammyb Well see, that's the part that doesn't make any sense, how can the endgame be retooled from a DLC pack you didn't buy? Obviously they must have meant for the endgame to only be retooled for people who do buy the DLC, no? People who don't buy the DLC play together, people who do buy the DLC play together.
IDK, still sounds like a mistake to me. What if someone gets D2 for Christmas but doesn't get/buy the DLC, does that make the game unplayable for them w/ no online community?
aargh, you know what, don't waste your time answering that, I can use Google as well as you can, I need to research this properly before wasting any more of your time.
@Octane while you can add trophies via DLC i'm pretty sure your NOT allowed to lock base game trophies like the platinum behind them
sounds like Activision are breaking Sony and Microsofts terms of service and i did hear that MS are even offering refunds because of this although i'm not sure if that's true
@rjejr You can still play the game, you just won't be able to get powerful enough to do these particular missions.
So previously you could get to Level 305 and the endgame content required you to be Level 300 to do it. Now the DLC allows you to get to Level 330 (or something) and they've changed it so the endgame requires you to be Level 330 to do it. But if you don't own the DLC, you can't get beyond Level 305, thus you can no longer do the content.
It's basically like that.
@rjejr There's strikes in the game, which are basically dungeons, and they're very low level. They introduced "heroic" strikes on Tuesday, which makes them harder and gives better loot, but only if you own the DLC. So think of it like with Breath of the Wild when they locked the Hard Mode behind the season pass.
this is why i never even considered Destiny 2 after spending countless months on the original. the first game (with friends) was really fun but the DLC started getting out of hand & the moment i missed one the game was basically unplayable. ill never play another Destiny ever again
So frustrating! Loved Destiny 1, like D2 not quite as much but the game play is still just as solid. Bungie/Activision just continue to make the dumbest decisions possible at seemingly every turn. How could they not see in advance that this would cause an uproar? Just dumb imo
Glad I didn't bother getting it.
@RedMageLanakyn I'm ok with them locking stuff behind a season pass - well I'm not but that's another story and Shogun will come for me if we go down that path - but not locking stuff you already have when a new DLC pack comes out that you don't want. The whole thing really reads like a mistake to me, except I finally had a chance to go research it and it isn't a mistake, they screwed over their paying customers on purpose. Just like they did in D1 as you mentioned earlier. I really don't see how they can get away w/ doing that, how Sony or MS would let them. They can't put a plat trophy in a game then make you pay $20 3 months later to get it. 3 years from now in the PS5 4k collectors edition all DLC included, fine, but not now. That's inexcusable. All they had to do is keep the endgame boss at 300 and then add in a new harder endgame boss in the DLC. Thats' what DLC should be for anyway, new harder bosses, not breaking the base game. Hopefully enough people protest this to change it back. Maybe next year Time's POTY can be upset gamers who changed the industry for the better.
@Octane This! It happened to me with pacman ce2 of all things. That only cost me a fiver so i wasnt bothered, but when an update to sell individual levels dropped it locked me out of previously opened levels. I was like wtf man!
Didnt think it would happen in a AAA game. Destinys next expansion should be called the taken pi$$. Anyhow im selling d2 base game tomorrow this is wrong on a number of levels.
@get2sammyb Thanks for the in depth analysis. I think I have it now. It really wasn't an accident, it was an out and out @#$% move to make people pay another $20 to finish the game. Just like they did in D1. Hopefully the outrage hits them where it hurts this time.
I mean, it was so easy to avoid, just leave the original Prestige boss in the game at 300, add in another version, call him Super Sayain boss or Ultra or Mega, make him 330, all they had to do was change his color, it can't be that hard to leave the base game alone and add in more content with the DLC.
I think this pic says it all, planned $ grab. If I'm reading it right and Prestige was 300 before the DLC pack. I still don't understand how the game updates if you didn't buy the DLC though, still makes no sense. DLC should ADD stuff, not CHANGE stuff. And certainly shouldn't CHANGE stuff when you didn't even buy it. THAT MAKES NO SENSE!!
I've loved destiny since first playing the alpha, I bought destiny 2 and nothing changed for me personally, I still loved the game but now I think this is just too much...wonder how far people will get when trying to get a refund?
That's assuming you haven't already got the trophy for Prestige completion of a Nightfall/Raid yet. I am sure they allowed those who didn't get the Expansions to level up to the new Max level so is it not possible to get higher gear drops from the rest of the content, from the vendors and from decrypting engrams?
Seems like a test to see how far they can start taking these micro transactions.
@get2sammyb Ah right.
Bleargh this is pretty ridiculous. I haven't started the base game yet and if I were inclined to trophy hunt, I have to buy the expansion. Damn that is scuzzy.
Mark my words: Downfall of AAA Gaming Industry incoming. In another year or two the big ones, all being on the stock market, will crumble. Indies will rise and fill the gaps, approach AAA quality and budgets and the circle repeats again, until some moron in the US, russia, north korea or elsewhere in the "developed world" pushes a button and sends us all to hell.
@rjejr Yeah, I gave them a second chance, but they're not getting a third. They've literally learned nothing from their mistakes on D1.
They will change it
I'm very angry at this, just asked for D2 for Christmas but will change my mind now due to this. I'll probably get D2 eventually but not until the full collection comes out.
i don't remember any of the previous expansions preventing from you increasing your light level. generally the increase applied across the board whether you owned the expansion content or not. as far as i can see is this time they've changed the requirements for entry to the old raids which they didn't do previously.. i presumed this is to prevent it from being ridiculously easy - 6 level 330s could probably blast through a 270 raid in no time. the old content now requires a higher level to access, but does the game really prevent you from achieving higher light levels from engrams?
Didn't they do this with the first game, with Taken King or something? I seem to remember them locking certain strike playlists unless you had access to the expansions strikes.
Lol. Destiny....
So glad i never jumped on this series. I get alot of people love it, but all i have ever seen since the first game released was how bungie have repeatedly screwed their player base.
Awful. I hope people dont support this. Sadly they clearly will...
They could've at least added a few new trophies with the DLC...
There are so many things wrong with this game right now... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLkoMqI8534&t=639s
