"Online is necessary, or very recommended if you wish to achieve a long-term success." These are the words of CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski after being asked about Cyberpunk 2077 and how online functionality will be incorporated into the studio's next big project.
Although we've known for some time that Cyberpunk 2077 will have an online element, or elements, we're still waiting on concrete details. Nevertheless, Kicinski's comments to Polish business site Strefa Inwestorow suggest that some form of online functionality is going to play a significant role in defining the game.
To a large degree, Cyberpunk 2077 remains an enigma. We've seen nothing tangible of the title since its first and only trailer, which was revealed all the way back in 2013. Here's hoping that we hear more about the project soon, because we've got plenty of questions.

R.I.P Single player games. (Obviously they'll never completely go away, but clearly they're becoming less prevalent to some degree)
CD Projekt, I thought you were better than this.
The move toward the "as a service model" for games is garbage.
not to be overly cynical but with online components usually comes micro-transactions these days
I wonder how the reddit gaming crowd would react to their 'pro-consumer' poster child turning to the dark side, as it were
Guess it makes sense for a game set in the future. Obviously will need more details before judging, but this doesn't make me jump for joy.
I'll wait for more news before throwing my toys out of the pram thanks!
No interest in getting it anymore . I don't buy online only games .
I get that this seems like a bit of a shame to hear, especially coming off the back of The Witcher 3, which is an incredible single player game, but yeah, let's not jump to conclusions — this could be anything.
Having said that, it does seem like it's an important part of the project, and naturally, that raises questions.
Withholding judgment until there's further details, but these are mildly alarming buzzwords.
Will wait and see, I remain cautiously optimistic.
I'm still excited for it. This could mean something as harmless as Dark Souls-like integration or multiplayer missions separate from the main campaign.
Even if it does have more online integration, I trust CDPR to make a good game first. Good developers need to show how online gaming is done correctly, then we could hopefully be rid of lootbox-designed AAA games.
Besides that, the cyberpunk setting lends itself well to different forms of online functionality.
I am glad it will be online. However when the copyrighted the cyberpunk name I crossed this game off my list.
Et tu Brute?
Are people seriously just going to give up on Cyberpunk just because it has online aspects? Whatever happened to seeing what the game has first before judging.
@kyleforrester87 don't come on here with your common sense, my only hope at this point is that 2077 isn't its release date
@carlos82 eep my bad!
@KirbyTheVampire i guess you could say that single player games are kind of a poor mans splatoon eh?
That's lame, what else can we say?
@NintendoFan4Lyf Yeah, it could easily just be some kind of shared social space — nothing too invasive but still an important part of the game.
Many good games have important online aspects that you can totally ignore focusing on SP: Bloodborne, DS, Dying Light, TLOU...
@Gmork___ In many gaming companies eyes, I suppose so, lol.
I was hoping this would be the case anyway.
I wonder if this could be a more dynamic world - a bit like Destiny/Division too with a bit of GTA thrown in. It could be that the whole game is like the Witcher 3 or GTA but there is an 'online' like GTA or RDR online where the whole world is playable online and you can set up your own 'gang/posse'. It could be like the Division/Destiny where you have the whole world open but can take on 'enemies' co-operatively and/or have a separate but integrated PvP area/mode.
Its all speculation but 'online' doesn't instantly spell disaster to me. It will be interesting to see how CDPR do implement this. It doesn't necessarily mean it will have a CoD/BF style separate MP mode with the typical TDM, FFA etc modes. They could of course do this and it still wouldn't necessarily mean the SP game is now worse for it. It didn't seem to affect the story of Uncharted or Last of Us when they had a separate MP.
Mention 'Destiny' or the 'Division' doesn't necessarily mean this games SP can be affected either if it followed a similar thing. Maybe you can play the whole game co-operatively or have 'co-op' missions and reasons to spend time in that world beyond the story and SP side missions etc too. Essentially give the game an 'end game' with communal hubs and reasons to spend time in Cyberpunks world beyond the 150hrs or so it takes to beat the SP and ALL side quests etc with 'other' people. I wouldn't mind having some reason to still play in the Witcher 3's world - but once you've beaten the Story, there is 'new game + and you can make different decisions i guess but I would like to have some daily/weekly bounty/quests etc with sporadic 'monsters' attack (Public events) that you (and other witchers) can take out for 'rewards'. With its Day/Night cycle, these Monsters could be different depending on the time of day. To me its ripe for a Destiny type structure. We could all be 'Witchers' and aligned to different houses - roaming the world, picking up quests, playing gwent, taking on bounties for rewards etc in that world. I can see Cyberpunk 2077 working in a similar way too that still wouldn't impact on the story but give you reason to play beyond the story.
There are many factions, corporations and diverse groups that maybe they use the 'whole' game in a GTA/RDR style - more GTA as that has more vehicles, set in a built up city etc.
Anyway we will just have to see what they do. I am not writing it off yet - it is CDPR we are talking about - not EA!
Wasn't the Witcher 3 a huge success for CDPR? Then why is this ''necessary''?
@andreoni79 Let's hope that is the case!
This is surprising to hear but actually has me intrigued as to what they're planning.
I feel like it could be something new/unique.
Can u children not jumpto conclusions? God its as if youread into it what you want rathertaking what they say at face value. Sick of reading about so many gamers whining about games in the comments. Get a life.
@starnivore its going to be very interesting
Honestly I think people get way too bent out of shape over this. It’s just a video game.
That's one huge pouch.
I need to know more before I throw a Phillip 'Bloody Baron' Strenger like tantrum.
I think it is too early to get annoyed by online components. Bloodborne had online components - it depends on how they are implemented and if it costs the player anything.
I'll wait to see what it is. It could be something separate from the main game, like an included Gwent-like card game.
I am a single player person, but I would love to see CyberPunk as a huge open world PVE MMO With Quest like World of Warcraft or Defiance a game you can play as both single player and group player. Jump in joining big group fights for loot. That gives you the fun of both styles of play solo and group.
Can't lie, this new makes the game much less interesting to me for right now. Of course I'll keep an open mind and hope when we get more news that it's actually good and any concerns were unwarranted but the way companies handle things these days it makes it tough to trust anybody, even devs with a good track record like CD Projekt Red.
