Destiny 2 has clearly been a hit for Activision, but the extent of the game's success has been hard to read thus far. Physical sales are down on the first game in both the UK and Japan, and we assume that the same has happened in North America, although we don't have those numbers just yet.

However, the publisher's keen to point out the title's impressive digital performance, specifically on the PlayStation Store. According to the company's most recent press release, Destiny 2 has broken the record for the "largest ever day one sales globally for PlayStation Store". In other words, a whole lot of people purchased the game digitally as soon as it launched.

To be frank, said press release is so packed with public relations fluff that it's all a bit difficult to understand. Apparently, Destiny 2 "surpassed the original’s records for engagement and digital sales in launch week," but other than that, the very specific wording makes us wonder just how successful the sequel has been when compared to its predecessor.

"Destiny 2 is off to a strong start as the number one console gaming launch week of the year to date," Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said. Meanwhile, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons seems upbeat: "We are blown away that we’ve had eight days in a row in Destiny 2 where we’ve seen more than one-million concurrent players grace our worlds. It’s equal parts inspiring and humbling, and we’re looking forward to showing everyone what’s coming next!"
