After some confusion, Sony has now confirmed that Shadow of the Colossus is being remade for the PlayStation 4 – and not remastered. Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the tidbit in an interview with Famitsu magazine, as translated by Siliconera: “It is a remake,” he said. “The game content is the same as the original version, but all the assets are being remade.”
What of the controls, then, which have admittedly aged poorly? “Player preferences for controls and such change over time, so we're working on implementing a more modernised way to play,” Yoshida continued. “And of course you can play with a feel of the original version, but what we're doing is showing how great the original work is, using today's technology.”
Perhaps the bad news is that original director Fumito Ueda isn’t really involved with the project, but developer BluePoint – which is making this version – did a great job of remastering Shadow of the Colossus for the PlayStation 3, so we trust it with this remake as well.

Bluepoint are gods when it comes to this type of thing, so I expect greatness from this game
Bluepoint is great. They should have been the ones to work on the Silent Hill HD collection. If they had, maybe Silent Hill would still be a thing right now.
Hell yes
I'm glad Ueda isn't involved. There's no need to, let him work on his next game.
I always thought this was a remake don't know why people thought otherwise.
Guess you have to spell out everything these days (i.e. FF7Remake reveal).
Never played the original, so I'm really looking forward to this one.
It was pretty obvious watching the presentation that it wasn't a remaster. Was curious why people weren't more pumped for it.
Easily the best thing in Sony's E3 show. Can't wait.
Kind of what I said - Taking the Original code and remaking the assets for it... In other words replacing Textures, Character models etc with High Res/High polygon versions. By transferring the original into a new engine, they can also work on the controls but it sounds like the core code will still be at the centre of this.
To me a 'remake' is a completely 'New' build from the ground up game. Remaster though can seem underwhelming to people because of games like God of War which appeared to only have a 'resolution' bump and 'remake' sounds better. I am not criticising, but lets be honest, some remasters go the extra mile by remaking a lot of the assets, putting work into the game but some just seem to bump the resolution up tweak a few settings and that's it...
CoD:MWr is how to do a remaster and this seems to be doing something similar.
