Toukiden 2 is a great action role-playing sequel, but it's safe to say that it's been overlooked by many. The title's online community is almost non-existent, which makes its multiplayer component feel a bit pointless unless you're playing organised games with friends.
Fortunately, the player count may be spiking in the near future, as Koei Tecmo has announced Toukiden 2 Free Alliances Version - a free-to-play version of the release that lets players take on group missions without spending a penny. It launches on the 30th May in North America and the 31st May in Europe.
It sounds like Free Alliances will be based on a stamina system, meaning that you'll only be able to play a set amount of missions before you have to wait for your stamina to recharge. Of course, you'll be able to buy gems from the PlayStation Store with real money in order to recover faster. It's your standard free-to-play stuff.
Hopefully this free-to-play version succeeds in bringing some newcomers to the fray. Will you be trying Toukiden 2? Grab your weapon and group up in the comments section below.

I still plan on picking up the main game. It just came out at the wrong time for me.
I'm sure the first time it's part of a Flash Sale I will grab it.
Interesting idea. Considering it shares so many assets from the previous release that I spent 300+ hours in, I'm still not sure it's worth it for me.
A must-have for me, just not now.
Played the demo and it seemed average. Don't think a free to play element will save it (especially with micro transactions).
@Splat True that. Sad that not a lot people playing the game but I think it was to be expected considering Toukiden Kiwami's multiplayer was completely dead.
Same kinda goes with Freedom wars, ROA and the God Eater games. They are active but not lively as Monster Hunter's. Soul Sacrifice Delta is the only monster hunting game with a pretty active online though I'm not surprised.
@Shellcore It doesn't need 'saving' - this is the same model they have done with a few of their games now - Dead or alive 5, Dynasty Warriors 8 and now this have all been a paid retail version and a f2p version on PSN with microtransactions to unlock certain aspects - the only difference being this is the first with stamina which is obtained by either waiting or paying - like a mobile game.
However, this version was also released within a few weeks of the Japanese version coming out a year ago - so this version wasn't created because of lack of sales but more to get more people into the series for free with progress that stays with you if you buy the retail version. Think of it as an unlimited demo where you can either pay a lump sum to get everything or enjoy literally the full game in small bursts.
I wish more games would do this - not only come in f2p but have a retail all-in version with a f2p version which has the same content. Toukiden is well worth its asking price though - I bought a copy but then won a digital copy off Koei in one of their live streams - I've spent about 50 hours in it so far and still see me playing it for many more.
@Turniplord Thanks for your opinion.
