Bloody hell, we've just been hit with a tidal wave of Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom information, so forgive us if we're still trying to gather our thoughts in this article. For starters, let's go over what a lot of people have been asking about: the combat system. Going by what we've seen of the game so far, it's safe to say that battles have taken a turn towards real-time action, and it's been confirmed today that they are indeed action-based - semi-turn based elements of the first game are no more. You'll have full control over your chosen character's movement, and each party member has access to different special attacks. You'll also be able to enlist the help of small creatures known as Higgledies, which can swarm your foes.
Next up, it's been revealed that the title's still on track for a 2017 launch; it'll be releasing worldwide at some point later this year, so the West thankfully won't have to wait. And, last but not least, we've been peppered with a handful of screenshots, which we've embedded here for your perusal. Needless to say, the game's still looking incredibly good - that art style is just gorgeous, isn't it?
Are you looking forward to Ni no Kuni II? Try to prepare your wallet for the rest of 2017 in the comments section below.

"I'm going to make a kingdom where everyone can be happy!"
Ugh, please release in the fall. I still haven't gotten through the first one!
I would have preferred totally turn bases but at least they chose something, loved the first but the combat felt really boring and clumsy to me. Bring this on 😄
That looks so good!
I'm still not sold on the main though. I really liked Oliver.
What...wait, where are the familiars? Please don't tell me they ditched that for those little stupid higgledies or something...
And yeah the full on action based combat...eh, I would prefer the original I guess but no problem...
If they don't have familiars I rage hard.
Looking for to this!
But why do the characters in that last pic look different in a chibi short of way compared to the other images on top?
@WanderingBullet If I remember correctly in the original game going through the overworld was also different in scale than going through a dungeon or certain areas.
But yeah, this seems a little excessive...
I'm a little worried the second ones characters won't be as memorable but should still be a great game.
Day One.
Hype through the roof!!! I'm glad they didn't go with turn-based either. In my opinion, it's a dated combat mechanic and I can see why classic JRPG franchises like Final Fantasy ditched it to begin with: IT BORES ME TO TEARS! As much as I love Pokémon also, I think it too should maybe shake up the combat formula a bit going forward.
@AFCC Yeah, the difference in the first one wasn't as obvious as this.
Come on, have mercy on me! Where am I gonna get money for all the amazing games in 2017?!
Not to mention I'm getting my PS4 in March and there are so many great releases until then... Poor wallet.
Please come soon!!!!
Wow this game looks great! I always wanted to play the first one, but never got the chance on account of my PS3 yellow lighting me.
-Unrelated- Sorry to go off topic! Is PSN working properly for everyone in the US? It's behaving funny, and I cannot connect to game severs. More specifically the For Honor beta. -Thanks!
@AFCC No mention of familiars in any of the previews - I wouldn't get your hopes up, sadly.
@KingofSaiyanZ I hope you get to play the first one too, it's really good! Studio Ghibli worked with Level-5 for that one.
@Constable_What - The PSN status site says some services are experiencing issues.

For somebody who loves and prefers turn based combat, this is unfortunate.
@ShogunRok I'm going to kill myself
Cannot wait for Ni No Kuni 2 the first was an excellent game, i totally trust Level 5 to make this just as good as the first one.
I never got to play the first either, the turn-based battle system really put me off, I hope they have kept the familiars though, I thought the Pokemon style feature was awesome.
@AFCC Give it a try first, it might not need them!
@RedMageLanakyn
I haven't even STARTED the first one.
The PSX trailer for this totally sold me on this game. Never really liked Japanese titles (apart from early GameBoy Pokemon) but there's something about the art style combined with the sections of combat that I've seen that's got me putting it on my "To Buy" list. Have to admit that I was a bit surprised to find out that the main girl protagonist was actually a boy though!
@KitsuneNight It is a slow burn at the start, and a bit grindy. Very much reminds me of the beginning of DQ8. Story is excellent, and once you get into the groove of gameplay, it's hard to put it down. Did get stuck about halfway through and took a break, I know I just need to grind some more.
@ShogunRok @AFCC a lack of Familiars also enrages/saddens me!!
@RedMageLanakyn
That actually puts me off even more to be honest.
I hate grinding.
I'd rather play a different game then grind.
I never tried the first one but the gameplay trailer at psx definitely got me interested in this one! Not day one but I'll keep my eyes out for it!
@ShogunRok I guess you're right, I'll probably buy it anyway...But I always thought that was the main feature of the first game...restricting you to 3 characters is kind of a bummer...
@SuperSilverback Yap, sad news if it happens to be true...
For People Who have no Ps4 > also a pc release
Looks like I know what I'm getting for Christmas.
Unless I get a Switch, XC2 and Mario Odyssey, then this will have to wait 6 months until a 1/2 off sale.
Oh, it really does look beautiful.
@JesWood13 although I do like it on FFX remastered and the skills make sense.
@RenanKJ lol I feel your pain. I'm trying to tell myself 1 game at a time throw them on the Amazon wish list. Hope for sales when I knock out my backlog!
@KitsuneNight sometimes I find that with the online guides can get me through the tough parts didn't know to get that skill or there's a secret way to beat this boss. So many options for our time now 😀
@KitsuneNight Well yeah, if you're burned out on grinding, most JRPGs won't be very appealing. The combat system is fun though, reminds me of FF12.
The first game was one of my favourite games on PS3 and I'm always in the market for some JRPG goodness. It's a shame about the lack of turn based battles and familiars like, though they do appear to have a replacement but at least it still has the overworld map which is sadly a dying breed and the game looks beautiful, I can't wait
@rjejr the switch worries me on the prices of the memory cards and docks. Also not many games overall. If you get a chance there's a good Kinda Funny Colin is right video about it.

I'm sad that the familiars are gone. I loved that pirate cat and superhero bat. But the game still looks fantastic and I can't wait for it.
@Splat Thanks!
@RedMageLanakyn
Not so much as burned out, as just a dislike for grinding.
i just don't like to do the same thing in the same spot over and over and over again, just to level up so I can tackle that boss .
It feels like padding to me.
I'd rather make forward motion and see rest of the game instead of twiddling my thumbs, doing nothing.
Most Jrpgs don't really appeal to me because they cant ( or wont) let go of the grinding mechanics.
@smythelove
Well that' s another issue I have.
I have so many games, such a huge back log, ( 800 by my last count and that was BEFORE December ) that I am even less inclined to sink 100 hours in one game . When i can finish 10, 20 games in that time frame and whittle my backlog away.
@KitsuneNight wow 800! I think I have like 10! Is this like all Steam games? Yeah I guess I just like the long experiences and am ok to wait for stuff down the line, maybe I'm a weirdo lol
Nice! I can't wait to hop into another Ni No Kuni game.
@smythelove
No, I " only " have around 400 Steam games.
I have around 130 ps3 games, ( well over 200 if i can be bothered to get ps plus ) 40 Xbox games, 80 Saturn games 24 ps4 games,
and a host of others spread over 12 systems .
I going to love this. I hear that there will be a some great adult themes to the story line. I got to buy this day one.
@KitsuneNight that's insanity! Lol you should be doing this for a living 😀
@smythelove
Well I doubt Push Square is going to offer me a job ;p
Realy realy hope this comes in the summer and not at the end of the year when red dead2 is keeping me from sleeping
@Eternallover21 Seems like an enemy...doesn't seem like you can tame them...this is sad..
