Mafia III PS4 PlayStation 4 1

You know those occasions where a bit of news filters out and you almost have to read it twice in order to properly parse it? Yeah, this is one of those times: Mafia III has become 2K Games' fastest selling game of all time, outpacing franchises such as BioShock, NBA 2K, and Borderlands. To be honest, we're as flabbergasted as you are.

According to the Washington Post, a whopping 4.5 million copies of the sandbox outing were shipped in the title's first week. Now, it's perhaps worth adding that this figure doesn't necessarily represent the number of units sold to consumers, but retailers aren't really in the habit of buying stock that they don't need.

It's an interesting one, isn't it? Lincoln Clay's adventure received a lukewarm reception from critics, and while its marketing push was meaty, it never really felt overwhelmingly big. It's a very satisfying result for the series, though, and hopefully it will give new developer Hangar 13 the scope to evolve some of the ideas explored in the game.
