Activision has confirmed that you will indeed need the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare disc to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered on PlayStation 4. The confirmation follows on from a story earlier this week, in which we reported that the disc requirement was looking likely.
Basically, this is to prevent people from simply buying Infinite Warfare, downloading the included remaster, and then selling the disc. Obviously, this only applies to those who are buying a physical copy of Infinite Warfare.
How do you feel about this? Is it fair play, or is Activision in for a world of hurt? Don't act like the remaster won't be pushed onto the PlayStation Store anyway in the comments section below.

You know why, it's to stop people buying it just to get Modern Warfare 1 then selling it because they know no one actually wants Infinite Warfare
it's also why they aint selling it separately
i ordered the physical edition and received a download code for MW remastered. the retailer (shopto) promised/advertised 30-days early access, so i'm expecting to be able to play this without the disc for at least the next 30 days (though the playstation store isn't letting me download it - it says i do not have a token - yet it's in my services list), as the physical copy won't be shipped til november.
I can see them also doing this to prevent scalpers as well selling MWRM codes for an inflated price on ebay or Craigslist.
So how does this hit the 30 days early thing then? especially since MW is basically it's own separate thing. don't tell me the disk is needed for a download game that's unrelated as part of an early access. the industry isn't that dumb...
@BLPs
Digital package only. I think it's something stupid like £90 though.
@Oi_Oi_Spanky ...christ that's just...no. XD You don't do that, ever. Was it always labelled as a digital only thing? Please say yes...
Yet another reason not to give a poop. Seriously, Modern Warfare wasn't that great to begin with. Good by COD standards, mediocre for "Great Game" standards.
@DaweezMauiWowee Watch the language please.
MW was the best COD's at the time and still is one of the best COD games.
Really looking forwards to playing MW again, both its campaign and multiplayer. Its not a surprise you'll need the IW disc to play MW, otherwise you would be getting overpriced MW codes on ebay.
I think Activision is absolutely right with this reasoning. I'm against trade ins anyway as it hurts the developers as they see no money from the pre owned sale, but I'm also used to having games tied to my account I come from a PC background. Trade ins on those have been gone for years, its good consoles are finally catching up.
@MaseSco PC game's are alot cheaper though, it was obvious anyway they would do this i'd be suprised if anyone's suprised.
@leucocyte @BLPs ive just got a notification on ps4 saying its playable for 30 days (just for the campaign which i knew was the only thing availble) then you need the disc and another code from the physical release to continue playing
im not happy ive got it for the remaster tbh i wont play online IW cos it looks garbage imo, preinstalling the campaign now so i can have a crack tomorrow, if they do release CoD4RM standalone i imagine they would have to patch the copies that came with the legacy editions so they run without the disc at least i hope thats the case
i got the same notification, it's downloading for me right now. CoD 4 is by far the best of the modern/future CoD campaigns, and easily its best multiplayer, then they went mad adding even more unbalanced perk, killstreaks, abilities, etc. etc. bit miffed that i'll have to keep the IW disc if i want to play the MWR multiplayer though.
@leucocyte me to but it is what it is CoD4 is far and away the best in the series - one of the best shooters ever for me
Glad im not buying that game..bf1 rulez
So how are they going to make sure the multiplayer isn't dead? If you can only have it by handing over $100ish how big is the pool of players going to be?
@MaseSco I can see being opposed to trade-ins, but since when was it okay to bundle 2 completely separate games and not sell one standalone?
I've still got Modern Warfare for the PS3. If I fancy a go (which I haven't for about 5 years ) then placing it into my PS3 sounds a cheaper option.
@MinerWilly unfortunately CoD4 multiplayer is now unplayable on PS3 - it got hacked to pieces on consoles years ago. hopefully with the remaster, it'll be back to a level playing field. i've played through the first couple of campaign missions, it's surprising how much better it does actually look, and not just because its 1080p compared to the 576p that it was on PS3 - the textures look cleaner/sharper.
@sonicmeerkat - yeah, that could be a bit of a problem, but considering black ops 3 has sold something like 15m on PS4 alone, there'll probably a enough interest in the game and people buying the various editions, so there'll be a reasonable pool of players for launch. if you look around, you can get the legacy edition for £64 in the UK, which is about $80 (and that includes 20% sales tax).
I guess they only added the remaster in the first place to try and bump up sales numbers for IW. Which it will no doubt do. It will be interesting to see sales number and player numbers for the game. They only changed the FAQ of the webpage a couple of days ago to reflect this important message. i guess keeping this secret as long as possible so they could get many pre-orders was important to them. Its a sales game. I have no issue with trying to stop the 2nd hand sales market for games and this is a step towards that.
You can get the Legacy edition for £59.99 in the UK
The more I'm hearing about this the more it's putting me off it.
i've never entirely understood the 2nd hand sales market in the UK, it always seems like absolutely terrible value (for the buyer) to me. if you go into CEX, often they're priced higher than you can find them new if you do a bit of searching, or the condition of the boxes is in a terrible state. even at game, why would you buy a pre-owned version at £37.99 when a brand new copy is at £39.99 - and if you're not a rush to play something, it's definitely better to wait it out til the game is on sale (which for many titles isn't that long), it'll be cheaper.
@leucocyte Maybe, I'm not buying it because of this concern too unpredictable.
Pass.
Companies taking DRM too far. When you start telling me I've gotta put in the disc for a completely separate game A to play game B... you've gone too far.
First year I'll be skipping CoD since 2012.
@JaxonH **sigh** You are not going to get it are you?
@Tasuki
Not sure what the sigh is about, but no, wasn't planning on it. If they sell the remaster separately I'll buy that
