It's a real credit to Playtonic Games that Yooka-Laylee seems so authentic. Drop the polygon count and resolution of this trailer and it'd look like a Nintendo 64 game, which is what the developer's aiming for, of course. This brand new Gamescom 2016 video shows off some of the environments you can expect to explore, with the obligatory ice and underwater levels included.
The only concern that we foresee here is the performance β there are clear framerate drops in the trailer, and the Unity engine's yet to play nicely with the PlayStation 4. The dev's got plenty of time to clean things up, though, and we sincerely hope it can. Like, when's the last time that you played a platformer like this on a PlayStation system β Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, maybe?
It's long overdue.

Not a big fan of the fart bubble, but otherwise, this looks awesome! I feel like the rare of old might be back π
@MadAussieBloke All the R&C games, as well as all the Jak sequels, had an emphasis on gunplay. So far, I haven't seen any guns in this, and therefore I agree with Sammy that it looks most like the original Jak. This is the Jak 2 I've always wanted but never got. Maybe when they're done with this they can make "Krystal on Dinosaur Planet", b/c I never got a Starfox Adventure sequel either.
@rjejr
Ya, PS platformers just aren't the same. More action beat-em-up/gunplay focused.
This is more along the flavor of DKC Tropical Freeze (even has the minecart levels) which is probably the closest thing we've had to a modern Rare game, only this is minus the hardcore difficulty and in 3D.
And PS4 owners actually get to play this one.
@JaxonH "only this is minus the hardcore difficulty"
Well I certainly hope so.
@MadAussieBloke Like @rjejr said, It is quite different, though. Ratchet & Clank is more of a story-driven affair full of mid-action banter and with a heavy focus on gunplay (and honestly not my kind of thing). Banjo games are much, MUCH more open, allowing you to basically experience each world as a single huge adventure. If Ratchett is Uncharted, Banjo (and apparently Yooka-Laylee) is GTA, to put it in Sony-friendly terms.
Yeah, R&C and Yooka-Laylee might exist in the same broad genre, but in terms of scope and game progression, they're probably not at all comparable.
I'm super-impressed with what I've seen of this game thus far. Hopefully last-minute optimization will take care of any of the framerate hitches.
Finally we're getting a real sequel to Banjo Tooie and an actual 3d platformer. I loved the recent Ratchet and Clank but that's more about shooting than actual platforming and exploration. I've missed the days of Mario 64, Banjo and yes even DK 64 (maybe not so much the latter)
Looks brilliant , I love how the 3d platformers are making a comeback.
Tearaway's a good shout! I still wouldn't class it as one of these "types" of platformers, but yeah, it's pretty close.
@get2sammyb Team17 is doing the PS4 port. It's so Playtonic can focus on delivering a Wii u experience using Unity. And what do you mean Unity doesn't play well with PS4? My lecturers say it works great (Though they are so PC Gaming biased that they make us use CryENGINE...) and yes I know they are lying as usual.
@MadAussieBloke Yeah... when it's unnecessary, which is not the case with Banjo, and hopefully not the case with Yooka. Myself, I'd say games trying to be movies should be a thing of the past, but sadly I'm well aware I'm in the minority.
@Grawlog Can't blame a guy for trying.
@BLPs Literally every Unity game I've reviewed has had serious performance problems on PS4.
Looks like a good time! That choice of music though, hah.
@get2sammyb Huh...okay Ill have to look into that. The engine works just fine and smooth on other systems, even mobile...so why is it a problem on the PS4 of all things? We'll have to see. Its one of the most popular engines and can produce great stuff, it would make sense for the PS4 to support it fully.
@get2sammyb Huh, Unity problems on ps4....
"Like, when's the last time that you played a platformer like this on a PlayStation system β Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, maybe?"
Exactly, long overdue so I'm looking forward to Yooka laylee. This is sort of the reason I always have a nintendo console for stuff like this...
