The rumour that Rise of the Tomb Raider is set to release on the PlayStation 4 on 11th October prompted some pretty interesting discussion here on Push Square this weekend. According to the GameStop Italy listing – from which this entire story stems – Square Enix will be charging around €70 for the port, which suggests that the game will retail at the same price as most new games, despite it being delayed a year on Sony's new-gen system.
This has led to some great discourse regarding the value of the game. For example, many feel that the critically acclaimed game is a must play, and thus reckon that it should command full price on the PS4. Others, however, argue that the Xbox One version can be purchased brand new for $40 or less right now, and it would be unfair to charge PlayStation players $60 with that taken into account.
We can see both sides of the coin. On the one hand, a great game is a great game regardless – but on the other, there's a definite pricing predicament that Square Enix has created for itself here. In our opinion, the publisher may be able to get away with charging full price – as long as it includes all of the title's expansion packs and perhaps some bonus content on top to sweeten the deal. But what do you think? Give our poll a spin, and let us know what you think.
Will you pay full price for Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4? (217 votes)
- Yes, it’s a superb game so I’ll be buying it regardless
- I will pay full price, but only if it includes extra content
- No, I’m not paying $60 irrespective of any add-ons
- Er, I’m not interested in Rise of the Tomb Raider at all

Nope.
If I bother at all, I'll wait for it to hit Plus, either heavily discounted or free.
Not a chance am I buying it after the way SE handled the whole situation.
Yup, I will, a great game is a great game.
I probably won't and it has nothing to do with SE deals or if it contains the DLC, for me it's just that I have other games I want to finish first and by the time I get to Rise it will probably have dropped in price.
What @Tasuki said.
No, I am happy to pay a premium for getting something near release, like spending a lot seeing a film at the cinema, but once times gone by I can't get hyped so I'll happily wait to buy at half price.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA -deep breath- ....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
No.
Not buying it but I see no reason why it should not be a full priced game. Its not been handled well but if Microsoft had not put up the money then the game would probably never have been made.
Ill wait another year and buy it for £14.99
Sure, if it has enhanced performance and comes with additional content.
Otherwise, I'll probably wait until it's $30 or so.
My finances for October are already stretched by the imminent release of PSVR and some accompanying games. Then there are other standard, conventional games a'la the last guardian that are on my wish list. So, unfortunately, as much as I've been looking forward to this game, it will have to wait until I can afford it.
I won't be buying it on PS4 - not because of pricing but because I already have it on Xbox One. I may be tempted if they do a complete edition or if it has a 'Neo' mode. It was one of my favourite games from last year and would highly recommend it.
Its a shame that people are so stuck up and cutting their nose off to spite their face over this. You don't get a 'discount' on all those 'PC' games that have ended up on PS4 - quite a few of the Indies for example...
Probably not, but not because of any exclusivity nonsense as I'm not too bothered about that, I'm just not a heeeugeee fan of the last Tomb Raider game, although I do admit I had a lot more fun with the PS4 version of that. I'll pick this one up for sure, maybe at full price or maybe less, depends if there's anything else to play. But I won't sit deliberately avoiding it when there isn't anything else worth playing.
I'll probably trade a few awful games in toward it either way.
After all the talk of the game being optimised for xbox with xbox devs at SQ. I'd expect a R&C price point
@dryrain I doubt that, I think the game would have still came out, but more so later considering the revenue. Besides that, this game shouldn't be full price, absolutely not. I won't buy it, but if people like Tomb Raider, then I can see the reason to buying it.
I haven't liked Tomb Raider since Tomb Raider 2
I am not paying full price even if it was listed at full price with 20% discount with Best Buy on all new games which I would pay $50 after tax. But I don't want to pay $50 either even with all the dlc included. I love TR series but I look at the Microsoft deal as a slap to ps4 owners who heavily supported the remastered TR reboot among all the other TR games in the past.
I don't care if it's not the developers fault or not but TR series has always been a non exclusive until now. It's like madden becoming a exclusive to only Xbox one for one yr then becoming available next yr to Sony again. TR wasn't originally made for Sony and Microsoft but as long as Sony existed we've had rights to TR until Rise of the TR.
So I am waiting until the game is $30 or cheaper before I buy it with or without the DLC included with the game.
I don't pay full price for any game except new Battlefields (and even that I pre-ordered a few weeks ago for £33 or £34 quid) I have yet to play many great games even ones I own , got The Witcher and Fallout 4 both untouched and both under £20 months ago. Just haven't the time...
@PoNY_LTD Exactly what I'll be doing and do with most games, nothing to do with rage against Microsoft exclusivity , I just wouldn't pay full price for any game.
I didn't read the article properley, and due to my phone I thought the question was;
Would you pay full price for Rise
Damn right I would, that's the xbox version of order 1886.
Then the full question revealed itself
You know, guys, this is a game. And an awesome one. I reeeally don't get why some people think they were betrayed by the earlier release on Xbox as if TR was their girlfriend/boyfriend. Please, relax, it is a g-a-m-e.
Anyway, markets vary a lot across regions, but in Latin America games are still new more than a year after release. I, as many others, usually don't buy games at launch, and they're still charged pretty much the same a year after release. So, yes, of course I'd pay full price for this game. Btw, I loved the previous Tomb Raider. =)
@MinerWilly that's fine, of course you can wait.
But don't you get hyped for a must have game? (I'm obviously not talking TR here) For me this year its final fantasy 15, as crap as its likely going to be I will happily pay full price to witness, play and share my opinion at the point of release. I will probably pay up for Titanfall 2 too. Last year it was mgs pp, Disgaea 5 and the year before Watchdogs and GTA V. I dont regret buying any of them.
I've waited a year, I can wait longer for a price cut on PS4. Way too many games in the backlog at the moment.
Not in a million years!
The ship has sailed and the Xbox One version is pretty cheap, so I doubt this is gunna win them any favors with a lot of gamers. Exclusivity deals, yo.
I'm not getting the game as i'm not intrested in TR but if I was I wouldn't pay full price, I might of been willing to pay £55 if it came with all content expansion's etc as that would count as a discount and would be acceptable for me. I think it's more likely they will probably try and sell it as a new release, then sell you the DLC like usual NO way would I do that. Might be day one purchasable DLC, that should cheer everyone up surely they wouldn't do that (maybe at a discount?).
I loved the last game so yeah, I'd pay full price. Though I'm expecting that to include all DLC.
The bigger problem for me is the rumoured release date just before a ton of other games I want come out, and I might not have finished FFXV either.
Might be better holding off and picking it up cheaper.
Yes it's only a game and yes, exclusivity deals aren't good for any console but the only way to really show publishers, developers and manufacturers that we're not amused is too hit them where it hurts and that's why I'll wait a few more months, maybe January 2017.
I seldom pay full price for any PS4 game so no. Paid $15 for the first one so I can wait.
It'll be £20 to £25 come December and the sales. I'll get it then.
@BrizzoUK This exactly. Irregardless if it is considered a "new" release on ps4, it is still a year old game. A game that can bought used for 30 dollars or less. The real question here is why isn't SE pricing this thing at 39.99. I have to imagine almost everyone already knows this is just a re-release of the X1 game, and it is entering a VERY crowded gaming period. Show that you still care about your PS fans SE and make it 39.99 brand new and I bet it would sell a few milli9n copies on PS4. Full priced, be lucky to get to half a million, imo.
SE can wait and keep on waiting
I've said it once and I'll say it again: the fate of this game is truly sad. It's one of the most criminally under looked games of this generation due to that exclusivity deal with Microsoft. In fact, it's my personal favorite game of last year.
However, just because it's that good, that doesn't mean I think PS4 players should pick it up at full price. I don't support this exclusivity garbage aside from the obvious first and second party games, so I say if it's more than 40 bucks, wait for a price drop. But just be sure to pick it up at some point, as it's one of my favorite games in quite some time.
I still haven't gotten around to the first one yet. I bought it for I think $14 two Christmases ago. So I'm sure by the time I get to it there'll be a GOTY for about $20.
Full price for a old great game? No chance.
Language -Tasuki-
I would pay full price if I wanted the game but I don't.
Real problem here is exactly what happened to the game when it released on the X1, to much competition. There are more games than I can even remember releasing between August and November, and some really great, long awaited, games mixed in there as well. Seems like really stupid timing IMO.
This place gets more and more amusing by the week :]
An amazing game but i already have it on xbone.
Depends if it has all of the DLC bundled with the game. I have the game on Xbox One already, but I would love to 100% it on PS4.
No, not even if it has all the DLC and extras. Don't get me wrong, I really want to play this but my backlog is big eniugh that it'll be cheap by the time I get around to it. Plus there's a lot of great games I missed out on, like Arkham Knight & Witcher 3, that are getting cheap and I'll buy those first.
Lol no, doing so would support this model I'll pass entirely.
@stevejcrow people that say just chill out its just a game don't understand what the publishers did. I just read that TR reboot sold 8.5 million copies which I assume are from all consoles and PC. These days these bastards don't tell you exact #'s on sales and how much per console.
All I'm saying is TR has never been meant to be exclusive. So I do take it personal the way TR was handled. I just hope with some loss of sales that if another TR is made it will never be a exclusive deal again.
All I know if eidos has financial problems it's sure as hell not from TR reboot.
A great game is a great game, exclusives be darned! Even if I was a PS only gamer, I don't think I would've been too fussed about waiting for it. Like I said before, I'm probably going to double dip and buy it, even if it's at full price. Definitely if it's enhanced for the Neo. I want a third TR, so yep. Supporting the devs.
I haven't even played the 1st one even tho I have had it since release on ps4. And once I beet that I'll look up the synopsis online for this one. And people say used car salesman are bad, look at game developers. The thing sold so poorly it was released within months on PC and now they are just doing the same now that the exclusively is expired.
Nah, already have for Xbox One.
Given that I'm still looking forward to Uncharted 4 and the Witcher 3 , I'm in no rush.
No chance. Considering they really didn't want to tell anyone it was ever coming to PS4 at first, I feel they don't value us as customers anyway.
If it support ps4k and/or ps vr then yes, if not I'll wait until the game discounted on psn.
Ill buy it for $20 in a year if I have nothing else to play. The way this generation is going though, I just dont see that happening.
There is a lot of games coming out over the next few months, TR can wait it's not going anywhere & will only get cheaper.
Nope... Not paying full price for a game thats been out for near enough a year, I'll wait till I see it cheap.
I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill here - especially as all of the details aren't even known yet! I also think there is something to be said for putting a decent value on your game, and showing that it's worth this price point. Plus, this kind of thing used to happen a lot of the time back in the 90s, so it's no skin off my nose.
If anything, the bigger issue is that this year has been insane for great releases, and will continue to be so. So I doubt a little money off would make people buy this over other titles coming out anyway.
And with Uncharted 4 being as well loved as it is, I doubt people will be that bothered!
@Grawlog I share your views on this.
I'm a relatively new gamer but it amazes me the amount of people that let business interfere with enjoying games. I personally don't care that it's been exclusive for a year, it looks great so I'll probably buy it!
I rarely pay full price for a game and won't for this either. I've got loads to play in my backlog can happily wait for a price drop...
I think from Square's point of view, they took a big payment from MS up front and now can't expect to charge full price for a year old game that has dropped in price on X1. You can't have all the cake and eat it and the market determines the price not them.
This old game worth $25. top.
What about "no I already have it on PC or Xbox?"
@mrobinson91 I agree. It's also weird how people act like every time something happens, it's the first time. There are 100s of examples of a game coming out elsewhere and being full price. Chrono Trigger was rereleased on the DS about 10 years after it first came out and cost the same as all other countries DS games. No one complained. When GTAV eventually came out on PC, nearly 2 years after PS3, it cost the same as a normal PC game, if not more.Just 2 examples put of 100s or even 1000s.
I will wait and see but I think that a full price point will mean that people will just wait three months for the inevitable price drop. Not only that but it is releasing right at the start of silly season. I know that is what I will do.
I feel sorry for the devs. I loved TR Definitive on PS4, would have got this at release last year. I have played TR since PS1 days. In fact, I think I have played all home console games. For it to go exclusive now was a little bit disapointing. Of all the games released late last year, this would have been top of my list.
Itll depend on what im playing when it drops tbh
They are really considering this?!
So they delay the game for a year - ok - and THEN try and make you pay full price for it?
Nah, hope everyone shares this opinion as well, because this whole timed exclusives don't work. You either go all the way to have the game on one system, or you release it for all, but to expect people to pay full price for a year old game, it's beyond ridiculous.
I call for a boycot!
I guess if 'full price' means £50, then no, I won't buy it straight away. £40 I'd consider it, but will probably be waiting for £25-30 before I make the purchase. Got plenty to play until then so happy to wait.
Even if it'll release on full price, then retailers will surely lower its price within a month or two.
Anyone who pays full price for this would just encourage them to do it again. I hope people see sense and don't buy it
Interesting poll results. Seems like Square Enix has a real challenge on its hands.
The hype has come and gone for me - replaced with "new" experiences. This isn't so much that I won't buy it on principle, more just that the interest has just gone. Like everyone else has said, if a lower price point (like £29.99) I may bite. If I really wanted TR, I would have bought an XB1.
I'll be buying secondhand.
@get2sammyb to be fair they had a real challenge from day one, when people were whining that Microsoft announced it as an exclusive. Then got worst when they were being dodgy about the timing of release on other platforms (because you know, why would they if they wanted to convince people to buy an Xbox One at the time). Lots of folks (on here, at least) were vowing never to buy it, because "Lara had betrayed them, even claiming they had Nathan Drake now, so screw Lara, because they would be too busy with him and all of their backlog anyways." Now that Uncharted is said and done, most are still proclaiming "BACKLOG!" almost a year later (which admittedly this year people will actually be more backlog heavy than they were last year with new hardware releases and even more great content). So yea, I said all that to say this: RotTR was always going to be a heard sell and the poll results don't surprise me in the least.
There's like what, 25-30 million PS4 owners out there? You gotta know all of them can't possibly be as hardcore as folks on a PS focused site. If advertised correctly, I'd imagine even a small percentage of sales would yield a good ROI. Will it be enough for Square Enix? Now that's the intresting tidbit.
I'll pick it up second hand, so it's cheap and Squenix aren't getting any of my money on this one.
Are people refusing to pay Full price for games like Limbo, Shadow Complex or Kerbal Space Program for example? All these games were at least a year old on other platforms before coming to PS4! Are people getting there knickers in a twist because another platform had these 'highly' rated games first instead of celebrating the fact that now they will also have the opportunity to experience why these games were so highly rated WITHOUT needing to buy a new console?
I get it that 3rd Party Exclusive content - regardless of whether its timed or not, is not great for gamers! Its great for publishers/developers - securing funds to make a game - and great for console manufacturers - to brag about these 'exclusive' deals but for gamers, these deals are terrible.
You don't see Xbox owners getting all but hurt over SFv or the fact Injustice didn't come to XB1 whilst it is on XB360 and PS4. You don't see Xbox owners whinge that AC4 and Watchdogs had 'extra' content that will never come to their console.
I know its worse as this is an established and long term franchise. The reboot certainly left things in a way that made you excited for the sequel. The exclusivity deal though may have really helped the development team 'push' their ambition for the sequel - made it a much bigger/better game as a result. It hasn't made the game 'worse' or not worth playing anymore regardless...
It could work to PS4's advantage - there was a few 'bugs' at launch which have been ironed out. There could be some 'new' content for the PS4 launch for all we know too but even if not - the game was still one of the best games of 2015...
Meh. Since Square Enix choose the money bribe from Microsoft instead of launching the game for ALL gamers at same period. I'm also choosing my money to go to another studio who treats all gamers as equals. I will buy ROTR but since ps4 was an afterthought, that game will be an afterthought too- like 2nd hand bargain for under £10. I'm buying final fantasy 15 at normal price cos so far no dodgey bribes set the moment!
I don't care about the MS deal.
Sadly, that crap happens.
I DO care about the fact that the game is one year old, and the same version is cheaper on Xbone.
That said, there are just too many great games coming out after summer, that I probably won't buy it untill it's on sale anyway.
Ok I may change my mind. Rise of the TR is coming out 10/11 and with 3 new modes which if packaged with all the dlc already given which I think it will be is worth $60. So the boycott may have to end. I'm still going to only pay $50 or less depending on if I accumulate reward points for money towards games at Best Buy.
I'll wait like a year or less and get it for 20 bucks on Amazon.
