We're going to assume that this isn't going to go down well with the majority of readers, but excitable Street Fighter V producer Yoshinori Ono has hinted that the game's upcoming cinematic story expansion will take between "one or two hours to complete". This is the mode that's coming in June which will presumably mirror Mortal Kombat X's own campaign.
It sounds… Pretty short on paper, but quality over quantity, right? Speaking personally, this author isn't all that interested in the Street Fighter fiction, but given the game's bare bones launch, a lot of hope had been pinned on the mode bolstering the single player experience. Ono does quip that it may take longer, and adds, "We could have sold this separately!" Be nice.
We posted a detailed look at the Street Fighter V content roadmap through here, so you may want to read that if you're still not sure what's coming and when. Is a couple of hours of story content going to quell your concerns, or have you put this game on the backburner – despite its genre-defining gameplay? Slap us like E. He's right though, they could have sold it separately, were people seriously expecting a huge ten to twelve hour campaign? SFV plays absolutely wonderfully and the best thing is that it's only going to get better and it won't cost any more money. If you prefer to wait then cool, you get it when it represents more value to you. But this whole lacks content on launch only becomes a problem when they start charging for extra modes and increased lobbies then I'll gladly give Capcom the "what for" but for now stop worrying and love the games.
@adf86 I suppose one would argue that The Witcher 3 was a massive, sprawling game at launch irrespective of the free add-ons. But yes, different genre, different game, different expectations. Yadda.
Never played MKX before. How does the cinematic story expansion work? I don't mind 1-2 hours of gameplay if every character gets their own cinematic story mode.
@WanderingBullet It's a standalone campaign. Chapters are divided into characters. You hop about watching cut-scenes while getting into scuffles along the way.
1-2 hours all characters?
@get2sammyb Thats a bummer, I was hoping for 1-2 hours for each character.
@Aslanmagic
Yes, I find this unclear too. Does that story mode encompass all characters like MK? Will every character have their own story mode? I would love 1-2 hours per character, since it is deploying until June. If it is 2 hours for everything then it should hit sooner.
@sinalefa It's going to be one, overarching story mode that includes most (if not all) characters in a single linear narrative.
Now that I think about it, most fighting games do it this way these days, which is a bit disappointing.
Its literally Halo 5 all over again.
I beat SF II on 7 stars with all (8) fighters just to see the extended cut scenes. Arcade mode is my childhood memories with SF. I don't want an 100 hour epic but at least give me a cutscene and let me beat up a car.
@get2sammyb Yeah that's why I edited it out, felt it wasn't the best argument
@ShogunRok
Thanks for clarifying. Now 2 hours do not sound like that much. You can get a ton of mileage just beating Arcade Mode with each character and watching the ending in the previous SF games.
@sinalefa
Its exactly what I was hoping for. :/
The story is nice add on to have but the meat and bones of this game is fighting other players.
There's been such a backlash about the lack of an arcade mode that I think Capcom would do well to just slap one in. I don't really see why not.
And I tend to agree with everyone above - I'd rather have a fully randomised arcade mode that I can play over and over with different characters than a story mode.
@sinalefa yeah, I'd like more time spent with each character in story mode to be honest. I know it's meant to be more mp focused, but still. It should sill be fun though. I'm not an online gamer but will have some fun doing couch mp at least.
@ShogunRok Yeah, same here. The story mode doesn't interest me, especially with how fractured the plot is, but arcade mode gives good replayability.
Actually, I'm happy with this.
1-2 hours sounds like an eternity compared to the 5 minute story mode we have now.
This story mode is the only use I'm going to get out of this game, apparently (since there's no arcade mode or World Tour). So hey, 1-2 hours per character... I'll take it.
Until then, I'm shelving the game.
EDIT*** Woah woah woah... 1-2 hours TOTAL?!! Not per character? This is a disaster. Unbelievable, I can't believe I bought this game.
@Warruz
At least with Halo 5 I got to play a full, single player campaign that truth be told, was pretty satisfying. I didn't finish it but, I sunk at least 5-10 hours into it at launch.
@ShogunRok
I actually like the way MK does it. Sure the story mode is short but the game isn't short on single player content when you factor in everything else, including that there's an arcade mode with a story for each character. I'm hoping Capcom adds an arcade mode, as SF has always had one, because right now this just seems like a lazy release. Not going to say bad, because the gameplay in SF is never bad.
I think Injustice Gods Among Us is the gold standard for single player content in fighting games
@Gamer83 I blame Bungie and Destiny for this. Great gunplay controls but the game had quite a few issues and was lacking in content but still a lot of people bought it (myself included).
@adf86 I'm glad you have the same mind set as me! All the content is coming, its the players choice if they want to wait or not. The hate is so OTT at the moment, although I do agree on the arcade mode, it is a staple. The same was with Splatoon when it launched, but I'm sure it didn't get as much hate, looking forward to all the fighters and updates in the coming months! Will be piling on my Fight points for Alex next month!
Yeah, I don't think I'm ever getting this until a proper arcade mode is added (and apparently this story mode isn't it).
@WanderingBullet
Not a bad comparison.
@JoeBlogs Doesn't work. I've tried that in the past before in hopes that Capcom would make or port a Monster Hunter game over to the PS4. So far, no dice.
