Once upon a time, the prospect of a new Infinity Ward developed Call of Duty would be hot news โ but the studio's stocks have fallen dramatically in recent years. Since releasing smash hits like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2, the developer's been on a bit of a downward spiral, with Ghosts being one of the worst entries in the ever-popular series so far.
But, as anticipated, it'll be whipping out its obnoxiously decorated shotgun and blasting the PlayStation 4 with a brand new instalment later this year. There's no word on which direction the obligatory FPS will take, but Activision described it as "innovative" in its investors meeting. We're going to recommend that executives double-check the definition of that word.
Seriously, though, it's been three years since Infinity Ward released a game, and it's been hiring like crazy since then, so it'll be interesting to see what it brings to the fore. One thing that we can be sure of is that Sony will be a primary partner, as the PlayStation maker signed a long-term marketing deal with Activision prior to the release of Black Ops III.

Imagine if we got a Cod that required more skill and thought rather than running and jumping like a d***... A realistic shooter with maps that don't have only 3 ways you can go, no kill streaks and you don't die after two seconds of spawning... I would actually jump back in!
Never really a fan of Infinity Wards CoDs. Besides by the time this comes out I am sure Black Ops III will already have a few of the DLC packs out.
Hmm. I liked Black Ops III and Advanced Warfare, but Ghosts was probably the worst CoD I played. I'm hesitant. Then again, maybe the success of Black Ops will drive them to make something better - who knows. I'll be waiting on some reviews before getting this one though.
CoD Ghosts on my opinion was better than MW3 but then again IW had a lot of trouble trying to get MW3 made and required help from a LOT of other studios to get it out on time. It didn't suffer a lot of the Lag/Host compensation, poor hit detection, Death Streaks (Dead mans hand, Martyrdom, last stand), carpet bomb support streaks etc etc etc.
Ghosts had some of the best DLC maps and the best hit detection in a CoD title. Its campaign wasn't that bad and I really enjoyed Extinction too. I know the MP had a few 'big' maps and the worst 'small' map (Freefall) but overall it was good fun and the specific field order map rewards were good fun too - Mike Myers, Predator, Pirate Ghosts etc. Fog is still one of my favourite DLC maps of all time.
It was developed in 2yrs for both Last and New gen consoles, PC and Wii as well. I think some of Ghosts issues stem from the fact that it followed BO2 and split the community because of the cross generation divide - people playing on so many different platforms.
MW3's story really finished that franchise. Ghosts has potential to have a follow up and if they did, I would certainly be giving it a go. If it is purely 'boots on the ground', It may feel like a backwards step after BO3 and could again suffer from following a great Treyarch game (how the times have changed).
I am a LOT more wary of CoD 2017 - Sledgehammers follow-up game to AW because that is the worst CoD game I have ever played (from CoD4 onwards).
With the calibre of people on board, 3 year development time and likelihood its only going to be developed for PS4, XB1 and PC (by IW) half as many formats and all close in performance, IW have a lot more time, opportunity and potential to make a great CoD game.
This article is perhaps portrays the opinion of an idiot. Every infinity ward cod so far has been far better than the previous two cods.
Blackops 2 is still my favorite COD of all time but i will say that Ghosts was not as bad as everyone says, in my opinion anyway. I liked Ghosts better than Advanced Warfare.
Big fan of Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3. Certainly there's reason to be skeptical of Infinity Ward but I'll try to keep an open mind. Ghosts was weak, yes, but maybe with the last two entries being pretty good, IW has been inspired.
I wonder if theyll break the cycle, make a completely new experience that is different and freshโฆ

Since its key people left due to in fighting the studio's output has been a bit rubbish. It makes me laugh though that a lot of people are quick to forget that COD4 changed the FPS landscape and set the mould for all future COD. Without Infinity Ward they'd be no COD.
Having said that did Treyarch did develop not just the worst COD but the worst FPS I've ever played in COD3 and later went on to make black ops after a longer dev cycle so you know past performance isn't always a good measure for future results.
Oh good. I've been dying to jump back into cod. Havent enjoyed, or even liked any of them since mw3. Black ops is, and always will be crap in my opinion. My ps4 game collection is lacking with no cod titles, and that's a shame. The last one I bought was ghosts on my *mumble mumble xbox360 and it was rubbish to say the least. I hope they take it back to basics, but the word "innovative" scares me. But here's a crazy idea, remake mw2, I think there would be loads n loads of gamers that would love this. Anyway, nearly at work so time to get off my bus. Have a good day people.
Hope at its a ww2 or ww1 game
@Sodapopstu What does that sentence even mean?
Its pretty much accepted globally that MW3 and ghosts were failures in one capacity or another.
@Badboy-Dj Would love that but I doubt it, future tech seems to be in hot demand still but a WWI or II shooter be great. Check out Battalion 1944 for a WWII shooter that's supposed to come to ps4, it's a kickstarter but it's been funded so here's hoping
Innovative. Yeah, good luck. Just pump out more the same, nobody really cares. Ghosts was perfectly decent, I enjoyed it.
I am just one of those bastards who thinks that COD 2 was the peak of the series.
I remember playing Medal of Honor Frontline on PS2. Now that was great.
@Sodapopstu and the circle continues
That they've been hiring like crazy isn't really a point of strength, cause they had lots of skilled people leaving them. I wonder if it will indeed be a full fledged new MW, or a (probably MW2) remake like I heard through the grapevine on multiple occasions. That would make perfect sense because it would get lots of old fans who moved on to notice it again and it would explain why Black Ops 3 apparently has "season 2" DLC plans.
Overall I think it would make sense to pull an AC but still offer a full fledged remake: they'll still have their annual cash so they don't have to cancel the CEO's Christmas party where they swim in the company's pool filled with $100 bills and a semi- break would keep the brand fresh. Black Ops 3 has the content and gameplay to keep fans happy and they could bring a game of they year alongside the "season 2" DLC plans and launch the remake with all DLC which gamers will buy anyway.
Edit: said this last week, I'll say it again just because I think it's awesome value for money: CoD Blops3 is for sale on Amazon.co.uk for ยฃ20, WITH a free steelbook! (Make sure you'll select the right one)
@Boerewors No COD will ever be Game of The Year, except for COD 1, and COD 4.
For me MW2 was the best COD apart from world at war. I would like to see a more skill based COD. I agree with @patinator
Ohh look, another CoD game, huzzah -_-
I know it is cool to hate on these games but truthfully, I've never seen the appeal. I played the early titles through to MW2 and I seemed to just whizz through the campaigns and multiplayer didn't do much for me. With the possible exception of the zombie split screen with a friend.
Still, I know these games make bazillions and I guess that is good for the industry.
@nlovett218
COD1 is still my favorite FPS of all time, such a great game
Having played my first CoD in years with black Ops 3 I can tell I haven't missed much. Zombies is a lot of fun and gives you things to think about but the main campaign whilst enjoyable is just run and gun action and pretty mindless.
I wish the studios would not step on each others toes, hate that BLOPS3 has mechanics from AW and copied ghost by having a garbage campaign.
I dont even read cod reviews anymore. Not sure why but i lost all desire to play them on my ps4. Yet i play 3-4 cod games on my ps3, and really enjoyed them.
@ReDiR CoD 2 for me.
Especially the Africa camaign!
whatever they do I hope it will include the excellent Extinction Mode, loved playing that
i stopped caring about COD since mw3 so no COD for me ...
