There's been speculation for a few months now regarding Destiny's future. There's little doubt that last year's expansion, The Taken King, gave the shooter the kick up the arse that it so desperately needed, but now that many players have exhausted the latest content, there's a lingering feeling that something's not quite right with Bungie's often referenced 'ten year plan'.
Near the end of last year, the developer spoke of plans to pepper Destiny's 2016 with smaller in-game events rather than pump out major expansions. At first, the proposal seemed reasonable enough, but now that we've sampled events such as the Sparrow Racing League, it's worrying to think the studio believes that such hollow content will be enough to satiate more hardcore Guardians.
However, putting a slightly different spin on this perspective is a report from Kotaku, which claims that something much bigger was initially planned for the sci-fi blast-'em-up's second year. Sources say that Destiny 2 was set to release this September, but just last week, those plans were put on hold. In other words, whatever Destiny 2 actually is, it's been delayed out of 2016, presumably in favour of something else.
If this rumour is indeed correct, then it begs the question: just what the heck is Bungie going to fill Destiny's second year with? As Kotaku's article alludes, it sometimes appears as though the developer itself isn't sure where its project is headed, and without any clear information on what they can expect, players are understandably becoming restless.
So, what do you make of all this? Are you worried about Destiny's future, or do you think that Bungie must have something up its sleeve? Pull out your heavy weapon in the comments section below.

Maybe they will fill out the year with nothing but minor updates or small expansions like the first couple.....
Not worried at all, the longer they take to create a fully featured sequel, the better.......as far as users leaving the first title, it's not a death nail, everybody and their mother already knows what Destiny is and will be looking towards the sequel for that Halo-esque fix.
I bought Destiny with all its expansions last November but never ended up playing it might just sell it now and wait until Destiny 2 is released whenever that is.
I'll be back regardless, it's still a lot of fun, ain't tried sparrow racing yet, it was a given that it would eventually turn up though. This year's content? Who knows, some new locations and enemies? Earth especially needs new locations. Also, please dump last gen.
@dryrain you'll get about £5 for it as all the extra content ain't on disc.
@bad-muthaAdebisi I did not use the game code
So... 10 years life span... The years pass rushing by latelly...
There's enough coming out this year I could do without getting addicted to Destiny again : p And I'd much rather they took their time and released something better.
@sub12 I agree! I would rather wait and get a better game than get an unfinished project.
@Gamer83 - As we were saying...
Not getting destiny 2. Ever.
No destiny 2 this year means they better have 2 raids, 5 new strikes, plus a way of bringing forward older content and making it relevent. I mentioned on a previous post they should expand challenge mode to include previous raids. They should fix prison of elders to be what a lot of us thought it would be, a different final boss each week, no key needed to open chest, then take all currently available strikes, and include them in heroic strike playlist. Give each boss strike specific drops as well to encourage collectors. After these things are done, create a new pve event that rolls around monthly like iron banner, with it having it's own rewards like banner.
Then, throw a bone at pvp and pve players, create a pvp patrol for each planet. Players can swear allegiance to either the vanguard or crucible, patrol missions will have the normal missions, plus allegiance specific missions that would task you with killing x number of guardians while on patrol. To keep the world alive, and create some true random warzones, pvp patrol should have fireteams up to 6, and population for each world guardian wise.
These are a few examples that would make this year relatively exciting and longer lasting while engaging players in collecting new gear, weapons, and providing the opportunity for each person to deck their characters in powerful and unique styles
Destiny 2 needs to be truly amazing in order to bring me back to the series. I remember being so hyped at first for Destiny, and then it slowly started to become a drag.
The problem with Destiny is that console gamers and FPS fans just don't understand MMOs. The end game of MMOS is just doing the same thing over and over and overy again just to get better gear. Content is always light when it comes to these types of games and yes you do exhaust it rather quickly. But as I said it's the end game grind that keeps these game types afloat.
@dryrain you'll be best off selling it on eBay then, retail shops won't care and just give you a crumby deal
They can delay it however long they want. I'm not gonna buy it. Unless Activision makes a new crash. I won't buy any of their games. Practically all the good content is hidden behind a paywall.
@Tasuki hardly. I play Warframe, elder scrolls online, and ff14 on my ps4. They are more rewarding (thank the RNG Gods) and less repetitive than Destiny. Destiny does have the better pvp tho.
@iDangerMouse_ It could definitely use a current-gen only sequel fixing some glaring problems. (not even talking about lack of content)
@Tasuki I disagree, I'm all for some good end game content. Diablo 3 is fantastic for example. I think what's important is being able to connect with the game's universe and be imersed in it. And for some, myself included, Destiny just feels too empty for that to be possible. Reminds me of some mobile phone games. Which some people love but I need a bit more depth personally to be able to really enjoy it. It's all in the detail.
Destiny will be a ghost town when The Division gets released.
Destiny came at a great time - especially on the ps4. Halo Reach was better Imo.
@Tasuki But FFXI and FFXIV are far more hardcore, traditional MMOs than Destiny and both did (and are doing, in XIV's case) really well on consoles. TESO also seems to be doing pretty well going off the DLC sales chart thing that was posted the other day.
I'd definitely say people that are playing Destiny purely for the FPS rather than the MMO might not enjoy those elements. It's nothing to do with console gamers, though. If a sub-based MMORPG like FFXIV can thrive on console, a sub-less FPS with online elements has no excuse in that regard.
@Tasuki The difference here is that Destiny is not an MMO, it's in fact a shallow version of an MMO or a "MMO wannabe" in simpler terms. I thought Destiny was an extremely shallow and empty game with not much variety at all in terms of unique gear and weapons, the stats left a lot to be desired, the way they had the leveling system made no sense at all and was quite pointless. While the game was a grind, the end game was garbage at it's best, I mean even DAOC, Conan, Warhammer online, or any crappy Cryptic Studios MMO had better endgame compared to this crap. People can say "well that's your Opinion, and while that's true, out of all the MMO's I'ved played or any game that tries to be like an MMO, this game really missed the mark.
At first Bungie was making this game sound more and more like an MMORPG, but the closer it got to a release, the more boundries this game was showing. I honestly don't care if Destiny 2 never makes an appearance.
Make the game Diablo 3 style, so you can find all the good loot by your own and I'm back in.
Seems that Bungie forgot to make a proper schedule before they started with development.
@Bigdoggy Agreed. I've played many an MMO in my time FF11 being my first and this game doesn't come close. Sure it has a few MMO element's but they are so watered down and mainstreamed it's just pathetic. The only thing good about Destiny is the PvP and that's meh at best to many RPG's and super sonic super's popping off, I also couldn't care less if there is ever a Destiny 2 this game is dead to me, nothing could salvage it.
I played the hell out of Destiny but just don't feel the need to go back to it personally.
they could easily re arrange the old raids and Skolas with new loot and enemies in order to give us something new to play....
If true Sony might actually have to have a blockbuster 1st party game ready this holiday season! (Can't rely on 3rd parties these days!!)
I'm done with Destiny for the moment (after several hundred hours of fun, so great value for money). Whether I pickup Destiny 2 will depend on if I can convince my friends to get it. I only really played on my own, and this restricted a lot of what I could do. Tried a few times to play with others, but I'm just not into actually chatting with random strangers!
