Fans of Koei Tecmo's enjoyable fighting game franchise have been calling out for a Western localisation of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune - the newest spin-off in a series which centres around bikini-clad women competing in minigames of various shapes and sizes. Despite the pleas and the company's great localisation record, however, things aren't looking particularly promising.
Posting on Facebook, the official Dead or Alive community manager has stated that the publisher still has no plans to bring the title West, and that this stance won't change in the future. Interestingly, they go on to share some of Koei Tecmo's reasoning, essentially saying that the Japanese company doesn't want to endure a backlash against the release due to its somewhat risqué content.
Indeed, we can certainly see such a situation occur if the game was to launch overseas, and we suppose that the publisher just doesn't want to deal with that sort of opposition. The good news, though, is that if you're really desperate to get your hands on a translated version, you can still import the Asian release, which features English subtitles.
What do you make of this? Are you opposed to titles like Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, or would you have liked to see it come West? Take a dip in the comments section below.

include english subs in the game and let us import it, problem solved
@TheMightyPunram cool, i know it's strange but these games are really fun with with mates, especially if you have had a bit to drink ^_^
Years ago there was an arcade game in the east that was about walking up behind people and jamming your thumb up there butt. Even had a hand shaped joystick. Still waiting to find that somewhere. Just found it hilarious there was an actual market for that.
@TheMightyPunram no honestly you have a few mates round play some games, after a few drinks you stick a game like this on to mess around and have laugh because it's so ridiculous you can't help but have fun
They never seemed too keen on releasing it out west from the get-go. I'd wage a guess that this is more a monetary reason than it is a political reason.
I'm disappointed on principle. I had no intentions on getting a copy, but it's a silly reason for those who did.
That's a stupid reason. That kind of controversy almost always helps a product sell better.
Pfffff a lot of girls enjoy that kind of games. I love collecting all the presents and dresses for Kasumi & C.
It's not something I'd buy, but it still sucks that those who may potentially buy it won't be able to - and all thanks to the Mary Whitehouse brigade who complain if a woman's skirt doesn't cover her ankles.
Never bought a DoA Xtreme game and had no interest in this. Disappointed that these devs caved and are forcing people in the West who really want it to import, however, I don't think we're getting the whole story. Yes, the devs would have to deal with some backlash but Rockstar gets backlash all the time, doesn't stop GTA from being easily the most despicable and offensive (and one of the best because its so over-the-top) game series out there. The difference is GTA can sell 15 mil like nothing, DoA never comes close to that and I'm sure the horrendous sales of DoA 5 didn't help matters.
@Paranoimia
They can't control how much of her body a real woman chooses to show or not show, however it's become abundantly clear, if my sales theory is wrong, that devs have become cowardly and will cave and if the politically correct crowd senses they can control something, they will. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt to the devs for now though. I really don't think the full story has been told yet over the next few weeks I think some writer from some magazine or website will do a little more questioning when looking for a story on a slow news day.
I do not believe games should not be released in an area just because it might offend someone. Its a shame they have taken this stance and forcing people who want it to pay higher prices to get it imported.
@BigDaddyT0101 the arcade you speak of is probably based off the japanese kids game/trick/prank called kancho where you hold both hands together like a gun and sneak up on people and jam your finger gun into peoples butts while yelling KAN-CHO!!! lol
@dryrain
Yep, but they could just include men in the next one and start work on a "budgie smuggling" physics engine, precisely working out the exact movements and wibbles of a comedy oversized appendage whilst indulging in an array of beach sport related chicanery and tomfoolery. Something for everyone then.
Pretty much reflective of the world since social media got big, everything is offensive to someone. For all the good it has done, IE, a more interconnected world with more liberal thoughts......it has done a lot of harm and counteracting with it's blame and shame mentality.
There are games way worse then this coming out in the west all the time.
@sub12
Precisely, it's pretty sad when people can no longer listen to a viewpoint that doesn't align with their own and rather than ask questions, look for middle ground and perhaps learn a bit, it's more like "rally the villagers, burn them at the stake for their whacky views".
But it isn't being "liberal" ,or "conservative", it's about being an idiot or not.
@Splat
The US is backwards when it comes to that, for sure.........it's OK to shoot people in the head by the dozens, but damn it you show sex or some T@A.
@sub12 - The Witcher 3 (my GOTY) has some of the most if not the most graphic T&A I have seen in a game and I don't recall any backlash.
It's really shocking how permissive our society is regarding any kind of violence and how prudish it is regarding any kind of sexual appeal.
It's simple death, violence and drugs are all fine but boobies are worse than the devil himself
I'll admit, I don't like these games, I don't like T&A just for T&A, so I don't care if this game comes stateside, but I do agree that the reasoning for stopping jiggle games is kinda bunk when you have games that actually show naughty bits yet get released, as well as violent games of course.
The only real valid reason I can think of, is if any girls are jailbait. Even if it's non explicit, girls under 17 or 18 appearing in stuff like this is a no-no in America.
Will we at least get Senran Kagura?
@JoeBlogs That's honestly the problem I have with games focused on sex, hence the comment "T&A just for T&A". I know this will look hypocritical based on my other comment but I don't mind if a woman shows some skin as long as they are portrayed as competent women with some actual character. In DOA's case I know that the ladies are more than just fanservice, because they are primarily fighting game characters. But the Xtreme games are what people always think when they hear about DOA, so public perception is that it's just jiggles and bikinis. That sucks, because the DOA series are pretty good fighting games.
@Gmork___ that's the one!! I remember reading about it in an issue of egm way back when. Ever since then the collector in me wanted it. Just too funny not to have in the man cave
there goes my hope for a western version where they replace Marie rose with my girl Mila
"Publisher doesn't want to cause trouble"
More like Publisher doesn't want to get harassed by psychos...
Sigh.................Censorship no matter how you slice it it's censorship, I personally don't care for games like DOA X3 but at the same time adult consumers should not be policed by SJW / Feminazi of the world. If you don't like it then don't buy it. But if someone else is interested don't be a hater just except other people's taste in entertainment. You can gave your opinion on why you won't support it but please respect the consumer who wants these kind of things in the world.
It will stop me from coming to then ;-o
So, to the people who say it's "how women are portrayed", well, how exactly ARE they being portrayed?
I'll tell you- as imaginary women in bathing suits on the beach. That's it. Women, men, dogs, cats and all manner of fictitious beings get portrayed in just about every manner imaginable in video games. It's not anything to get bent out of shape over.
People read too deep into things. I wonder if the same people outraged over this protest sexy women on the beach and scold them for "how they are portraying the gender".
I don't care if male video game characters are dressed in spandex tights and no shirt (as is the case in many JRPG's). I don't go into spazz mode over "how this portrays men". Because it's not portraying all men. It's portraying that one character only.
Give em an inch and they'll take a mile. Now that these people see they can influence games, they're going to try even harder to censor and intimidate and attack publishers to prevent localizations. And it's only going to become more extreme with time. Eventually, games won't have a single female character in it with sex appeal.
Import the game! Support the game!
@JaxonH Before I say anything else, I'm going to say that I don't support how insane political correctness has gotten, nor do I go bonkers (as in SJW whack) about how gender in general is portrayed. Sometimes, portrayal of such is done for actual, legitimate reasons (i.e. representation of time period) and I am understanding of that.
That looked like something off a note card.
But yeah, topic. I'm not a fan of how they're backing out, however, and just because I don't like over the top fanservice doesn't mean I'm going to say it shouldn't get released at all, because there is an audience for it. I may be 20 and stupid, but I hope I'm not THAT stupid. If people don't want it, they won't/shouldn't buy it.
As for portrayal, yes I prefer my females to act like humans with character instead of jiggle machines, so obviously DOA Xtreme isn't my kind of game, and in that respect I probably should've kept my mouth shut. They're just beach girls in a beach game. Fair enough. Arguing about female portrayal here is kinda dumb now that I think about it.
Honestly, I'll just leave it at that, I don't mean any ill will, but topics like this always end in disaster.
It's called the First Amendment (in the USA, at least). I can decide for myself why not to buy this game, which happens to be that DoA volleyball isn't as fun as Virtua Tennis or Hot Shots Tennis/Golf imho. Tekken Bowling worked so much better, somehow!
I don't care if you buy DOA, honestly, I don't. But have you read Play-Asia's twitter feed in response to this? I'm not going to post any links (because it's against the rules and you can just google it) but they're doing a pretty good job of baiting and flaming the issue. They even retweeted a joke about triggers.
Koei Tecmo need to ask themselves the question: who are we selling our games to, and who buys them?
I can tell you right away that it's not extreme feminists.
Don't be such cowards and claim it's the feminists when in fact the last few games weren't critically received or sold very well. People will buy it if it's a good game, even if it's smut. You released the previous two games, why not this one? Never bow down to the vocal minority, and make the games you want to make.
At least they had the sense to include English subtitles anyway so people could import it.
This is why we have game ratings. So consumers can make more educated purchases. This is stupid, every time it comes up.
I hope push square reviews the game so I can consider importing it.
@Vorlon I could probably offer thoughts in the forums when I get it come February. I don't know if they can get early copies before it launches though, since it technically isn't releasing in their region, if thats what you were hoping for.
@RPE83 You are very right my friend. It saddens me that here in the west where freedom of speech and expression were so important not long ago. Now freedom is being destroyed by pansies that get offended at anything. Live and let live I say. If boobs ofend you, then don't look at them people!. They sure don't offend me.
@tenderbeefcake
Truthfully, in this case I do think it's a commercial decision though hiding behind presure rather than saying "well, the jiggle demand in the west isn't high enough" .
It's not "banned" either , you can still import it. The actual censoring of Stick of Truth was worse (in EU/OZ).
