Uncharted: Golden Abyss wasn't included in Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection because it fell too far outside of the trilogy's story arc, Naughty Dog has revealed.
"It was definitely under consideration, because we were trying to see how we could collect all of the Uncharted games," community strategist Arne Meyer told Power Up Gaming at EGX 2015. "But when we went back and looked at what we were trying to do with The Nathan Drake Collection, we realised that those three games – the trilogy – actually provided a particular narrative arc that led into Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. We wanted to keep that as a holistic collection for that reason, and Golden Abyss kind of lives a little bit outside of that."
As someone who doesn't own a PlayStation Vita, this writer would have loved to play an upgraded version of Golden Abyss on the PlayStation 4. Having said that, it may have felt out of place next to the trilogy originally made for the console space. Are you upset that you can't play Golden Abyss in The Nathan Drake Collection? Honestly, it just wouldn't stack up next to Uncharted 2 and 3. The collection would have been more complete with its inclusion, but I think they did the right thing personally. It was an impressive handheld game, but it's not an impressive console game.
Does not bother me at all. I haven't played any of them so the trilogy will be just fine for me. I will be primed and ready for UC4 after completing the trilogy.
Not too fussed, it's a fair point, GA is a little outside of the narrative arc leading to 4.
I would still like to see it re-released on PS4's PSN. For me, it was better than the first one.
Golden Abyss was my first Uncharted and while I really enjoyed it, it doesn't hold up to the other 3.
If you haven't played Golden Abyss, you're not missing out at all. It was a decent game, but the only reason I'd recommend it is that it looks beautiful for a handheld game. And obviously that doesn't matter when you put it on the big screen.
I'd like to see it get a separate port on the PS4's PlayStation Store since PS4 gets both Gravity Rush 1 and Tearaway.
I understand the reasoning why they didn't include. Still, you could argue Peace Walker didn't need an HD port on consoles with this line of thought. I'm playing it now and can tell it's more suited as a portable title since it feels like a "light" version of MGS, but I'm glad it made its why to the PS3. I'd say the same for Golden Abyss. It's a fantastic title on the Vita, but wouldn't play or look as good compared to the other games in the Uncharted Collection. Despite that, it would've been nice to see it anyway on the PS4. I don't doubt it could've been done.

I think that's terrible reasoning. It may not impress on the same technical level as 3, but neither does Uncharted 1. Yet I like both 1 and Golden Abyss more than I did 3. Either it's a full collection or it's not. It wouldn't have hurt anything to put the game in. Of course, it would need a bit of an upgrade, and it's much easier to upgrade a PS3 game than a Vita game.
I'm calling bull here. They just didn't want to spend the resources; it had nothing to do with the narrative. They could at least be honest about it.
I would like to see in get it's own HD treatment as a stand alone PSN game like others have said.
That's just him being nice. Naughty Dog doesn't like the game. They had Bend cancel the sequel.
I would have liked to see it happen, if only because I don't have a Vita. Oh well. At least I still have incentive to get one.
I am sure that Naughty Dog were not happy that Sony insisted on having an Uncharted game made by another studio for the Vita. I am sure that within ND that game is considered to not exist.
Could have been an extra ND.
I loved golden abyss, I don't see why it can't be part of the DRAKE collection since, ya know, drake is in it.
I bet it'll be a ps4 download only game in the near future, aka after uncharted 4 comes out.
the reason it was not included was probably that it would not add too many sales while increasing production cost
What about the uncharted card game?! Or the game where drake has to collect coke zero orbs to keep running? Are they included at least?
They could always just release a Digital HD version on the Playstation Network. hint hint
Less work, higher profit. Simple as that.
They could have made it a bonus for completing uncharted 1-3, that way it wouldn't affect the storyline leading up to uncharted 4, plus it would have been a nice touch to use the dualshock 4s touch pad in the way you use the vita's during the game
@get2sammyb I rate golden abyss as the second best uncharted game only beaten by number 3! I hated the first game. And the 2nd one is brilliant but it didn't grip me. It was almost like they were finding their feet with number 2 although the opening chapter WOW! !
Then just call it trilogy, not "collection"
It should have been included due to it being a collection, I think they just didn't want to bother with all the work to get it on there.
@getsammyb I'm with you that it's no great loss, I played it on Vita and it seems to have been made purely to use the name on the handheld. Definitely not a patch on the console versions bit it was decent enough, far better they spent their resources on getting the trilogy running at 60 fps. For those saying it was so they didn't have to do as much work need to realise how much effort they have made which they didn't have to, just read what digital foundry have written to see the staggering amount of work put in to what is 3 full games and only charge the price of one. Compare this to the lazy ports of Dishonoured and that God awful Prototype and you'll realise what we are actually getting.
@get2sammyb Agreed, this would have looked awful on a giant tv. To bring it in line with the other games would have required basically creating all new art. Not cost effective.
Fair nuff, wouldn't might a PSN release though.
I thoroughly enjoyed Golden Abyss, except for the tedium of the random card drops which you needed for the Platinum... that took me weeks after doing everything else.
I'm not sure how well it would have scaled graphically, though... as great as it looks on the Vita, it probably would have taken a heck of a lot of work upgrading the models and textures for 1080p.
I never got to play Golden Abyss (don't see myself owning a Vita anytime soon).
So I'm also hoping for an eventual PS4 release, even if it's just a port instead of an HD Remake/Remaster.
