Star Wars Battlefront PS4 PlayStation 4 1

Star Wars: Battlefront is going to ride the coattails of force fever all the way to the bank this Christmas, but DICE is being a little too presumptuous if it expects people to get excited over Blast mode. The playlist was teased earlier in the week and has been announced as part of an EA blog post today – but it's not exactly going to make your lightsaber stand on end.

In truth, it's just Team Deathmatch. "Blast pits the Rebel and Imperial factions against each other with intense ten versus ten battles," a spokesperson explained. "If your team reaches 100 kills, or are ahead when the 10-minute round is over, you've won. Immediate, addictive, and exciting until the very last kill – that is our ambition with Blast." Sounds innovative, guys.

Perhaps more interesting is the way that the action will be framed. You'll be battling in interior areas of Endor, as well as the Ice Caves of Hoth; we suspect that a lot of Star Wars: Battlefront's appeal is going to come from such iconic locations being recreated for the PlayStation 4. The maps won't just be smaller versions of bigger arenas either – they'll feel unique for the mode.

"Say you've just played Walker Assault mode on Hoth and then switched to Blast, still on Hoth," lead level designer Dennis Brännvall expanded. "Thanks to variations in lighting and time of day, you'll definitely see a difference." Sadly, developer DICE is yet to release a trailer showing off these tweaks in action, but you'll almost certainly see something at Gamescom next week.
