E3 2015's all to play for, but Sony will have one victory to parade in Los Angeles next week: the May 2015 NPD. After a shock defeat in April, the Japanese giant has responded by immediately turning the tides; the PlayStation 4 was not only the best selling system of the month in the United States, but it also moved more software than its rivals, too.
"As we head into E3, we would like to thank gamers for making PS4 the top-selling console and the leader in software sales in the U.S. in May," a chuffed Sony spokesperson told GamesBeat. "We are truly humbled by this success and we look forward to sharing what's next for PS4 at our E3 press conference on 15th June."
While the PlayStation maker may be punching the air, it wasn't a particularly positive month for the industry as a whole – despite the release of heavy hitter The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Overall spend in the physical space tallied just $507.6 million, down a whopping 13 per cent year-over-year. Software dipped the hardest, tallying $204.7 million compared to $273.9 million the year prior.
However, hardware was also down by 18 per cent, totalling just $153.6 million. Price drops to the Xbox One may partially be to blame here, but it's more likely that CD Projekt Red's open world adventure wasn't able to move as many systems as Watch Dogs, which launched amid much enthusiasm in May 2014.
Despite that, Geralt of Rivia's escapade did come in at first, bullying both Mortal Kombat X and Grand Theft Auto V into the second and third positions respectively. MLB 15: The Show continued to lurk around the top ten, finishing in ninth this time, while FIFA 15 enjoyed an end of season boost into eighth. Not bad for a country that supposedly doesn't like soccer.
It's perhaps no surprise to see the PS4 back on top; last month always looked like a blip, and insider reports claim that it lost out by a negligible amount to begin with. Batman: Arkham Knight has been heavily associated with Sony's system, so it's hard to see June going any other way. It needs to keep its foot on the gas at E3 2015 if it wants to maintain this momentum, mind.

Who is still buying FIFA, gta5 and Minecraft? I came late to every one of those parties and seemingly left early too.
I reckon NA is gonna hot up for the VHS box With loads of big exclusives that I'm actually jealous of.
@rockman29 How could you not be by Yosp in a Cadillac!
Next year vita won't be anymore evergreen in top 10 after kicked out from FIFA 16. Oh well...
I think its weird PC games are included in physical retail sales, yet there is never a standalone PC game like Splatoon on Wii U. There must be some PC only games that sell well, no? (I stopped following PC games after Spore and Universe at War in 2008, right about when I picked up a PS3.)
And whos buying Minecraft on disc on the Xbox360? That game seems like a download to me.
I think it will be interesting to see which console sells the best after E3. My money is on the XB1. Aside from No Man's Sky and SOMA the big first party/timed exclusives im looking forward to the most are Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Since Uncharted 4 got delayed Tomb Raider has become one of my most anticipated games of 2015. I loved the Tomb Raider reboot so much I had it on XB360, PS3 and PS4.
Interesting making a comparison between MKX and The Witcher III, while MKX will make more money (it's a simpler game, has abusive dlc, and problably will sell more than the witcher), it's a game that will be remembered with a bad taste in the mouth, while Gerald's latest adventure will go down on history as one of the best modern rpgs.
Been downloading Witcher 3 on my Commadore 64, and I've seen noun a one sells figures for this system, for about 2 weeks and only 3% done, will be playing by end of year though
@WARDIE Batman: Arkham Knight's out in June. That will have far more impact on console sales than E3 - and Sony's got a LE bundle...
@rockman29 PC gaming global revenues were higher than consoles COMBINED (Thats 3 v 1, not even a fair fight)last year, and im pretty sure this year will be the same, especially considering no new gaming consoles were released this year.
And im not sure about that "consoles are dead", wasnt the other way arround ? console (etilist) were calling doom on PC ?
@rockman29 I feel you are underestimating how much does PC gaming sales
GTAV has more than 3 million sales on PC (bout 2.5m on Steam and a decent estimation (since the Steam version is different to the R* one) of 500k-1m of another)
Witcher 3 sold about 600k on Steam alone and thats not counting Uplay, Origin or the highly succesful GoG (CDPR own market, which, by the way, i assume they take FULL from every sale), 1.5m its not that far from real numbers (of a 4m total)
And people could go on, This gen and last gen consoles has been somewhat of a blessing (and a curse) for PC gaming in general, for once, the lack of power (because yes, they lack power) meant that a lot more PCs has managed to achieve what the PS4 and the XB1 can do (some sites even do matched priced equipment doing about as much as PS4 and XB1 in performance), meaning that developers has a much bigger demand on PC now.
Hell, way more indie games are releasing on PC than on consoles each and every month.
Of course, MOBA and some MMOs are the huge factors of the revenues, but that doesnt take that gaming in general is indeed selling on PC, even after all the piracy stuf which people like to use as an excuse.
Some games are even going PC exclusives (at least for some time) like Divinity Original Sin or XCOM 2, more and more developers put their games on PC.
@rockman29 You points are spot on, brother. I had to say that...lol.
So many people on forums think that if you don't agree with their opinion that your flaming them, and that's definitely not the case here, I too play PC games and Console games and you so elegantly presented the actual facts in your discussion, that I literally felt like I could not have said them any better.
Again, spot on.
