It's still a tiny bit too early to say, but it's looking like the PlayStation 4 has managed to get something of a foothold in its native Japan. The sleek home console has got a heck of a lineup over the next few weeks, but it's already kicked things off with Dragon Quest Heroes.
The action role-playing game sold a combined 102,966 copies across the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, helping the latter maintain its market lead for the second week in a row. Overall, sales of Sony's newest machine dropped by about 13,000 units, but that's not entirely unexpected.
As for the rest of the software charts, God Eater 2: Rage Burst on Vita dropped from 4th to 6th, while Evolve entered in 7th. Meanwhile, Dragon Ball XenoVerse managed to hang in at 13th place on PS3, as the PS4 version slipped out of the top 20. Regardless, things are definitely looking up for the PS4 in Japan, as it kept its head above the 30,000 mark.

Actually no, 3DS sold 33.950 units combined while PS4 sold 33.753, so 3DS is on the top...
"Dragon Quest Heroes still dominating software"
And the dead console PS3 version outsold the PS4 version almost 2 -1 67k - 35k.
@ferrers405 Or at least, it would be if they were counted as a singular piece of hardware.
@rjejr The PS3 is dead. Dying. Just not in Japan!
@ShogunRok - Just not in Japan huh?
Well then X1 is a dead dieing console, just not in the US!
And Wii U is dead and dieing everywhere, truly if Zelda U gets delayed beyond Christmas (Oh wait, thread jumping, sorry)
@rjejr With that superb Xbox One spin, you should consider a role in Microsoft PR.
@ShogunRok: That's not fair. They also didn't split the different builds of the PS3. It's highly misleading. The conclusion is still: the 3DS has better sales than the PS4.
(Looking at those numbers... how long will it be until news sites stop reporting on Japan?)
@Kidfried To be fair, there's currently only one PS3 model available to buy in Japan at this point, barring any left over stock of old models.
@ferrers405 @Kidfried Just to bring a close to this, the New 3DS also counts as different hardware, so no, the 3DS technically hasn't sold better than the PS4.
The New 3DS has different specifications, and even its own exclusive line of games. The chart would be wrong to count it as simply another model of the 3DS.
@ShogunRok
So Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is a exclusive line of games?
@sinalefa It's the first in a line of them, yes.
@ShogunRok if is this you want to say and believe, be happy.
But let's face it:
I was just voicing my opinion because I think the headline is a bit overblown. 'Stays on top'? Well, that's just hardly true. Let's just say: the PS4 was on the top of some chart. But the reality is about the same amount of people went out and bought a 3DS (of some form) as people that bought a PS4. And all while there were as many 3DS titles in the top 5 as PS4 titles in the top 20.
But like ferrer says, if that is how you see it... I'm okay to disagree.
@Kidfried @ferrers405 On the contrary, this isn't about how I see it - it's about how the Japanese charts see it, and the Japanese charts see the PS4 as the best selling console.
The fact of the matter is that the New 3DS and the normal 3DS are not counted as the same hardware.
In fact, I think it's a bit strange as well, but I don't make the Japanese charts.
@Kidfried @Ferrers405. What is this? a p*ssing contest? It matters that much that some Nintendo handheld is on top! This is Playstation only website it has some bias for playstation!
@Sanquine actually it doesn't matter, it's just that the headline is... misleading.
Don't worry @ShogunRok there are those here that understand & agree with your reasoning regarding the 3DS & New 3DS. Good luck playing that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D on your 3DS eh
Xbox One – 445 (703)
Lol!
@EWolf
It's just pathetic now. I've been one saying MS has to stay in that market but at a certain point, yeah...
How Interesting, PS4 hardware is boosted but the software is led on PS3.
@ShogunRok
Should have never made that talking point.
@Punished_Boss_84 I seem to recall writing that the only real reason the PS3 isn't in retirement is Japan itself. You troublemaker, you.
@ShogunRok
I don't remember reading that.
@Gamer83
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2015/03/talking_point_is_this_the_end_for_the_playstation_3
Ta-dah:
"There is one continued force that's stopping the PS3 from settling into a cosy retirement home, however, and that's Japan. Unlike here in the West, where sales have sunk like a rock since the PS4's inauguration, the console's still doing relatively well in the Land of the Rising Sun, and it's still getting a steady stream of software to boot."
@ShogunRok
I knew you wrote that, I was just being an a-hole. Funny you called me on that comment though and I deserved it.
@Gamer83 I had a feeling you were just joking, but you can never quite tell on the internet!
Gives me an excuse to link the article at least... What a sellout I am.
