As amazing as the initiative is, cross-buy has largely been reserved for smaller digital games thus far, outside of some big first-party forays like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Despite this, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – arguably one of the biggest releases this holiday – will be adopting the promotion if you decide to purchase the game digitally. Not bad, huh?
Basically, if you buy Sledgehammer Games’ futuristic first-person shooter on the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3 before 31st March, you’ll be able to unlock the alternate release for free. Now, you’ll need to manually complete the transaction – there are instructions through here – and you’ll also have to ensure that you’re buying via the PlayStation Store, but this seems like a darn good deal to us.
We suppose that Activision’s hoping to catch consumers who are currently in between generations, which makes sense, as we daresay that a fair few PS3 owners will be looking to upgrade this Christmas. Still, this may also come in useful for Trophy hunters as well, as there’s a good chance that you'll have two sets of trinkets to acquire if you opt to take advantage of this deal.
It’s also worth mentioning that Season Pass purchases will be cross-buy as well, and there’s no time limitation on when you can take advantage of that. And, of course, if you pre-order the title, you’ll also be eligible to Day Zero access, which will allow you to play 24 hours before everyone else. How can you tell that Call of Duty sales are declining a little bit?

Not really fair for those that would prefer to get a physical copy.
@Crimson_Ridley on the contrary, I've always found it not fair to get digital releases. I've always preferred buying retail because you can sell the games. I'm glad companies are looking to up the incentives for digital, even if I don't plan on going that route. If the price is the same, they need to come up with comparables.
Are you 100% positive that's what this promotion means? I took it as, if you buy the last Gen version, you can trade up to the new gen version one for free, but you in turn lose access to the original one in the process. If you guys are right that's a pretty sweet deal! Since I have friends on both consoles so I would be able to play with both.
Fairly certain that this promotion flows one way... PS3 => PS4 and not the other way around.
I got the email this morning, was pretty surprised, it will help sales a lot I imagine.
It doesn't matter which way it flows, just go to the pan store and buy the ps3 version and you'll get ps4 for free.
This would be a good deal if 1. it wasnt Call of Duty, 2. The digital price for this game wasnt going to be absolutely ridiculous
I wonder why this happened with two big franchises now.
@Punished_Boss
It is a bit odd. They allowed a discounted upgrade for Ghosts, but totally free? I wonder if your character stats and gear will carry over like in Destiny... it was always nice that my son's progress in Destiny would carry over to the PS3 (and vice versa) when I kicked him off of the PS4.
They probably crunched the numbers and decided people were only going to buy 1 version or the other anyway so this gives them a lot of good publicity with very little loss of profit. Maybe even more money as people who would buy the PS3 version release day and the PS4 at Christmas will be even more likely to buy the Season Pass day 1 now.
And for anybody asking quetions Sammy linked to the webpage twice w/ all the info and it does look like it's both ways not just 3 to 4.

And the FAQ: buy 3 or 4 DL only, get the other free

You know, the entire reason for this offer may be so they can ship less copies and get everybody going digital so less used games on the market as well. People buying PS3 on disc would trade it in for PS4 on disc flooding the market.
win win all around, which is hard for me to say, or believe, but that's what it looks like. Maybe there will be some revisions in the days ahead for everyone to complain about, seems to be SOP these days, SNAFU.
This is all well and good, IF the PS3 digital version is set at a reasonable price, and IF the deal goes both ways. If so, that's a great deal! Unfortunately, I expect it's more likely that it will go for about the same price as a PS4 hardcopy, and that the process will be one way and irreversible. Interested to see what they actually do here, but I wouldn't hold my breath..
If there is a title Sony should have really made cross buy, that is LBP3
Yes, common sense really, most digital sales probably suck real bad.
OK I'm not into CoD as much like when it first released but, D**N!!!! They need to do this a little bit more often! At least for an upgrade to the newer console. I really like this idea a whole lot! I just bought Fez and I k new it was cross buy but I didn't realize I got 3 versions of it. Its a neat thing to do. I can see how if they do this constantly they would lose money so it'd .make sense there's a time limit. It also makes me feel like buying it day one would be worth a lot more than getting it day 115 cuz very Farley do I preorder big triple AAA games since preorder bonuses suck usually (in america) digitally or physically. and they have enough copies to buy it 2 days later or even a day later usually in stores.
