While we appreciate that we’re probably jinxing things by writing this, PlayStation 4 firmware update v2.00 appears to have launched without too many setbacks. Bricked consoles are always a concern with enormous operating system overhauls like this one, but the system software refresh seems to have deployed with only the most minor of issues.
Sadly, there is one symptom that appears to be affecting a large number of people, and it pertains to the recently renamed Rest Mode, which was formerly dubbed Standby Mode. This essentially allows you to put your console into an almost idle state, which will save power but still ensure that any patches or updates download while you’re not using your device.
At the time of typing, a slew of people are pointing out that once they’ve put their system into Rest Mode, they’re finding it difficult to power the platform back up. We haven’t experienced this issue ourselves, but the problem does appear to be widespread enough to be worth writing about. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution.
1. Turn off the system
First, you’re going to need to force your PS4 to turn off. Hold down the power button on the front of the PS4, and wait for it to shut down. When the orange light on the top of your console has disappeared fully, unplug your system, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.
2. Enter safe mode
With your PS4 plugged back in, push the power button again and hold it down. You should hear two beeps: one almost instantly, and another after about seven or so seconds. Do not let go of the power button until you’ve heard the second beep.
3. Connect your DualShock 4
Plug your DualShock 4 into the console using the provided USB cable, and press the PlayStation button on the front of the peripheral to pair it with the platform.
4. Reinstall system software
You should now find yourself in the Safe Mode screen. Be very careful what you do here, as you could reformat your console if you select the wrong option. You’re going to want option three, which is labelled ‘Update System Software’. This will reinstall PS4 firmware update v2.00, which should solve your problem for now.

Great advice guys :+) oh and ....first
Mm Thanks, Sammy. But I guess I'll just wait for a patch because I'm scared something bad may happen.
@XFsWorld Yeah, it goes without saying, proceed with extreme caution.
Great info. Hopefully I won't need it but if I do this will come in handy.
I never use standby mode anyway I always just turn it off but you would think these problems would have shown during testing?
@FullbringIchigo Meh, these things happen. It's not affecting everyone, so I guess it just slipped through the crack. Considering how dangerous these firmware updates can be for any device, I think this one has gone quite smoothly to be honest.
@get2sammyb yeah it's been pretty smooth although the only problem I encountered was youtube uploading, it just doesn't work and wont stay signed in
Like many, I have the Standby issue. I hope Sony fixes it soon so I can go back to using Standby again!
Well this is awkward..... I've got out for dinner and left my ps4 on 'rest' mode to download the 5 gb patch for lords of the fallen -_- fingers crossed it'll turn back on without any problems as I don't really use the rest/ standby mode.
Thanks, it's happened twice today not everytime, hopefully this'll fix it.
Or maybe I'll just switch it off instead.
I'm trying this as soon as I get home. I had to hard reset to get my ps4 to turn it on for some Resogun before class this morning. Hopefully this fixes it since I always keep mine in "rest" mode.
@FullbringIchigo not everyone is experiencing this problem from what I can gather. That could make it hard to test for since it would require a fixed set of conditions. But yeah it shouldn't have slipped through testing.
I am fortunate to have a Vita with a huge backlog. My ps4 will be sitting until this is sorted I don't want a fried system, I had a ps3 that did something similar. Once bitten twice shy as they say.
Before re-installing, please try this trick. It worked for me!
I had this problem, but seem to have solved it more simply. When it was stuck not coming back from Rest mode (yellow flashing light) I switched to the Anywhere Net+ source for the PS4 on the TV and it actually showed me the PS4 screen so I could see what was happening. This system was stuck on a PSN registering screen. I couldn't get it to fix (had to reset again) but it gave me an idea.
Next time I booted, I checked all my PSN settings, and it said that I had to re validate my email address. Pressed the button under the PSN settings on the PS4 to send the validation email, validated the email that it sent me, pressed the done button on the PS4, and the issue has vanished. Working a treat now.
Definitely, worth checking your PSN setting for any (please fill out) sections before re installing. May save you lots of time.
Thanks so much for this!!! I was just about to get on twitter and see my options for doing this. My PS4 since updating about 3 times now have not cut on when doing so. Thanks & I really hope this option solves my issue.
I have confirmed this fix does not work(reinstall firmware)
This happened to me today, after getting home from work.I was not a happy camper. I just unplugged the power cable. I won't be standing by my ps4 until the next update
@Ginkgo mate, you might be an actual genius. I tried all the "official" Sony advices (rebuild database, reinstall the update, factory settings) and nothing worked. Your method worked instantly, at least so far. Cheers!
@Ginkgo where is the revalidate email?
@Stealthieone For me, I went to "Settings -> PSN -> Account Information". The first option there is "Sign In (Email Address)". Mines had an exclamation mark next to it and when I pressed X there was an option to send a validation email. Hope this helps!
Thank you i found it, right after i asked
Yeah the email thing didn't solve the problem for me
@DrClayman Yes, exactly. Mine had the exclamation sign too. it may not be the same for everyone, but I assumed I wouldn't be the only one with that issue. Glad it helped someone else if not all.
@get2sammyb bloody did it to mine this morning, tried it again and it seems to work now, I hope it isn't going to be a persistent problem
I had this problem last night, and found this article. Unfortunately, even the power button was unresponsive. After seeing a queue of 160 people on Sony's help center chat, I decided to unplug while it was still in rest mode. Left it unplugged about one minute, plugged back in, and it started fine for me. No more rest mode til a patch.
@Ginkgo Thanks for this bro!! I was about to flip a lid when this started. Really annoying and an inconvenience. Fortunately your method worked flawlessly and my ps is now back on point.👌 Many thanks again my man.
@Ginkgo Alas, it worked fine three times last night, but this morning it's back to its old habits I still think you're on the right path however, it definitely has something to do with the communication to the network. It only does it when it has to upload a save or something. For example, I played some NHL quick matches and then it went into rest mode fine. Today I started a new playoff mode, which creates a new save file, and the problem reappeared. Hope they sort it out soon.
Did it again, Sony need to sort it out now. I won't bother with rest until they do. I popped a disc into the system which seemed to work one time.
i cant believe sony !!!
it says you sould verify your account via email, but it wont send me the email !!!
i try it from ps4 and pc and nothing !!!
@FullbringIchigo It's rest mode now!!!! jest jest jest elbow jab
As an update after trying this, it does not work sadly =/
Does not fix it for me and I still have the same problem. Sony needs to fix this very soon.
@Ginkgo your fix worked for me.
To further explain the steps, here is a step by step explanation:
When you are on the home screen, go to settings --> PSN --> account information --> Sign-In ID --> Send Email.
The send email step will only appear if there is a "not yet verified" next to Sign-In ID step.
Easier than updating your system again.
Thanks @Ginkgo
Lets hope Sony makes it up to us with a nice freebie theme or something...I mainly got my PS4 to have something to play while my Wii U gets repaired and now this happens. And I sure hope my Diablo and Minecraft saves aren't corrupted.
