There’s been a lot of chatter about intellectual property ownership of late, with Sony coming under fire from some corners of the industry due to its reluctance to publish Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive without controlling the brand. However, we recently wrote an article about why the manufacturer may have made the right decision in that instance – and we’re somewhat being proven right.
Despite being published and at least partially funded by Microsoft, troubled developer Crytek recently announced that launch title Ryse: Son of Rome is coming to the PC – and in an interview with Eurogamer.net, the studio has also hinted that a hypothetical sequel could come to the PlayStation 4 in the near future, too. “We can do whatever we want with [the brand] with whoever we want,” boss Cevat Yerli said as part of a hard hitting discussion.
The gaffer added that he’s not 100 per cent happy with the sales of the first game on the Xbox One right now, though that’s likely due to the system’s small install base. In fact, he stressed that should a sequel get the green light, it probably won’t happen until the audience across both new systems is bigger. “It just has to wait for the right timing,” he continued. “And the right timing means higher installed base across next-gen.”
However, with the firm purportedly in dire financial straits as it transitions from boxed products to a free-to-play model, is a sequel even likely? “I know that there are a lot of gamers who are contacting me through different channels who want to see Ryse 2,” he concluded. “We're considering it, but at this point there is nothing official that I can talk about.” The question is: would you even be interested in a sequel on the PS4? Wear a ridiculous helmet in the comments section below.

Mass Effect 1 styled situation, like Xbox One's u-turns are happening very quickly. Not even a year has passed. I would much rather have Timesplitters, than Eye Candy Part Two.
I won't buy it. I could tell the game was going to suck regardless of how good the graphics are. That is the problem with crytek, even when I bought the first Crysis game when it came out on the PC, it looked pretty, but the gameplay was so freakin boring I almost passed out at the keyboard. Crytek hasn't changed a bit, pretty looking games, but insanely boring. ZZZZZzzzzZZZ
Mmmm, nah it's alright. You keep it.
Don't care, the saying about shining a turd comes to mind when I think about this game.
This game was always going to fail, wherever it goes.
I get the hate for this game but all I know is that I'm excited for it and will definitely buy it on Steam in about a year, when it'll cost less than a 10er. Even if the gameplay isn't great, I can still enjoy it as if it were an interactive movie.
If the sequel comes to ps4 as well, I'll definitely buy it at some point.
@Demi_God Lol
Topic: Um, well I never played Ryse before and I heard the gameplay was repetitive, so I'm not interested.
More games is always welcomed.
@RawWilson1 Unless it's Ryse. Ryse can sod off. Unless they make the gameplay interesting and not just QTE - slow formation march - QTE - slow formation march etc.
This game, like Knack, is best left forgotten about. Don't need either one getting a sequel.
i thought they said there was no chance of a sequel....these people have no idea anymore
I love Ryse, but if there is gonna be a sequel, make the single player WAAAAY longer and it better come to Xbox One or I'll be p/o'ed! (it doesn't need to Xbox One exclusive though, it might be best to be on PC, One, and PS4 in order to get bigger sales)
@Gamer83 woah, woah, I think Knack will be a cult classic in a few years. Pretty underrated.
@Shellybird27
Possible, I didn't think it was that good but it does seem to have a following.
@hydeks
The game should be longer and I think they should try to change the gameplay a little bit.
I thought it was a great game just my thoughts maybe its because i like those types of games but yea i thought it was great multiplayer gets really boring though dont know why they tried so hard on multiplayer with multiplayer only dlc
I will be playing ryse when it is out on pc, wouldn't grumble at a sequel to it on ps4 the more the merrier. Crytek going free to play though... really? I cringe when I read free to play because they aren't games with 'gamers' in mind usually just trying to sell silly amounts of micro transactions to casuals
My PC died recently (8 years old) and I decided to build myself a gaming PC to replace it. Its interesting being a position to play PCs games again after so long. I still prefer console gaming. I like the DS4, and so much less hassle, though some game styles just work better on PC.
So I am now in a position to play many of the XB exclusives not available on PS4, like Titanfall, Dead Rising and soon Ryse. So far, I haven't been inspired to buy any of them, which actually surprises me. Perhaps when I see them cheap. I'm curious about all 3.
From MS perspective, this has to be bad news. Other than Forza, what true exclusives are left? I'm sure Halo can't come soon enough.
Can't Crytek just let this game go. I mean, the game sucks, it will always suck, they need to just get over it. If they lose even more money releasing another Ryse game, they deserve it. It's almost like Crytek are in a state of derpality and they can't even break free from it, instead they continue riding the train of failure.
@Demi_God Why did you find Crysis boring? I thought the first Crysis (and FarCry) was fantastic. In fact it had everything I ask for in a FPS, bar the crappy ending. Are you a fan of FPS in general?
Crytek needs to think more about gameplay, as thay've got the graphics down to a T. I heard it relied heavily on QTE's, QTE are not a bad thing when used in moderation. Some of the best games have used QTE's to success, I would had thought Ryse would have benefited from combos. As I've not played Ryse myself as reviews really put me off the game, I'm not to fussed about Ryse2 to tell you the truth.
Yea i thought the graphics were realy good i hope they make a sequel this game is the type of game i love playing
Yeesh, Xbox one is losing retail exclusives (what little there is so far) to PC and now to the PS4 (heh, I'd be surprised to see one on the WiiU.)
Secure your exclusives Microsoft otherwise you're going to be in trouble.
I'd definitely give Ryse 2 a look on PS4.
I liked Knack, too. For the right price, Knack is a great game. Once it's down to, say, $19.99 or less, definitely pick it up!
@eLarkos I am and the game didn't pickup at all until towards the end, but once you went into that whole alien base or whatever, then it got even more weird. I didn't like the game and before it came out I built my computer to run it. So not only was the game shotty on the PC and it took crytek about a year before releasing a freaking patch to support multiple cores on the PC along with more GPU support and I didn't find the gameplay elements that good or interesting. All crysis games are very bland in my opinion and like I said, graphic wise, Crysis looks amazing, but gameplay wise, it's a borefest. Also, for multiplayer in their games, crytek blows.
If they were to ever release Timesplitters, I can't say I would be excited because I know what to expect from their game. all effort in graphics, nothing in gameplay. It's really a short story.
@RawWilson1 2nd that.
Also Ryse was actually pretty fun if not a but repetitive. It was the last game I had when I traded the XB1 in. I'd like to see it run on a better system so hopefully it will come out on a PS4.
Nah X box can keep it.
Can Xbox One keep any exclusives ? First Titanfall is already on PC, then DR3 to PC, then PvZ is coming tonPS4, then Ryse to PC, Ryse 2 is rumored to come to PS4, and Halo Collection is rumored, and we know Quantum Break is coming to PC because Remedy did the same for Max Payne and Alan Wake.
Why did I buy a Xbone again ?
@Dohv
It was the same in the early 360 days as well. Guess it really comes down to how much you like gaming on PC. I've never been a big fan of it but considering how underpowered the new consoles appear to be, I have started to give some serious consideration to doing just that. For the price of buying a PS4 and X1, that money combined could've gone towards building a gaming rig. It seems like virtually every third party game I want to play ends up getting a PC version at some point and with Kojima saying he wants MGS going PC eventually, it's not like I'd be missing out on too much.
@Gamer83 I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of my Xbone, I don't even play it at all. And the money I get from that could be used to buy all the PS4 games I want thats releasing. And I'll probably build a PC at the end of the year. No point in keeping something that I will rarely play. Sure Halo Collection is a good deal but I already put hundreds of hours into those games, and Sunset Overdrive is probably going to release on PC within a year or so same thing with Quantum Break which was the main reason I bought an Xbone.
Despite the PS4 "having no games" according to the Xbox fanboys I find much more reasons to play my PS4 then X1 especially with MLB The Show I know you understand how fun of a game that is. I want to know where all these exclusives are that every Xbox fanboy is talking up. The thing about a Sony or Nintendo console you know it will be worth it because you'll never see their exclusives on PC. And not to mention how I dislike the X1 controller, the games take 45 minutes to install enough just to play it and about an hour to completely install the game compared to 1 minute on the PS4 to completly install the game.Not trying to sound like a fanboy but this is just how I feel about that console.
@Dohv
The whole 'no games' thing is stupid. This isn't like last-gen where I thought Xbots actually could make a case because Sony was slow out of the gate with the great games (though credit where it's due, it hit with 3 really good first party-published ones in the last quarter of 2007) and not only was Sony slow getting its games out but third party multiplats were a joke on the machine meanwhile MS was getting exclusives, timed or other, like Crackdown, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3. You throw in the fact that The Darkness, Assassin's Creed, CoD Modern Warfare and others were all positioned as and performed better on 360 and it was a no contest. This gen I feel like it's been one of the worst starts all the way around. Wii U's first year was an absolute joke and even this year, while I'll admit I think it has better games than the competition, I can't say with certainty that a game like Bayonetta 2 will appeal to me, especially since I didn't get into Mario Kart 8 as much as I thought I would and Smash Bros. Brawl was a big disappointment on Wii so while the new one seems cool, I'm not completely sold. I laugh at the Xbots though, because, especially on youtube, a lot them seem like they literally are crackheads and the bs and lies that they buy into and spread are just hilarious. They hate a game like Knack or Killzone and then reel off all these 'awesome' Xbox One exclusives and I see Ryse being listed as one (a game that was panned universally worse than KZ: Shadow Fall, just to put that out there). They talk about how the 'biggest and best' PS4 game is a PS3 game but fail to mention that if you look around at any sites that track such information, the big upcoming X1 exclusive isn't Sunset Overdrive but is in fact, a collection of old Xbox and Xbox 360 games. So the hypocrisy is high.
I have a lot of problems with how Sony has handled the early part of the PS4 but I'm not ignorant to the fact X1 isn't killing it either. The problem for Sony is, at least here in North America, while MS is getting a pass, they are not and the focus needs to be taken off remasters and indie games if Sony wants to maintain momentum. For those who get their a$$es hurt when I suggest that, I'm not saying DON'T talk about those games, I'm simply saying the focus needs to be put mostly on the AAA stuff because the fact is those are still the main reasons people gravitate to these consoles. Contrast, Octodad and Resogun aren't why people are buying/bought a PS4 and the noise about 'no games' wouldn't be so loud if AAA games weren't still important. Period.
That got a little long winded but bottomline, all 3 companies can, and hopefully will, do better. This fall brings a couple interesting new IPs in Destiny and Sunset Overdrive and there are some sequels that look awesome as well like LBP 3, Far Cry 4 and Smash.
