Uncharted Movie

Nathan Drake’s big screen debut is very much back on track, with production set to start early next year. The cinematic adaptation of Naughty Dog’s blockbuster Uncharted brand has been on and off more times than a hazard light over the past few years, but director Seth Gordon – who’s known for a variety of projects, including Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief – is certain that the movie will actually get off the ground this time.

Much of his confidence stems from the script, which he believes is in a good place right now. “It's going to honour the mythology of the game, but I would say honour some of the most interesting stuff from the first [title] and build from there,” he told Zap2It. “There's some stuff that isn't in the game.” Ex-director David O. Russell famously planned to transform the franchise into an “antique hunting” adventure, but it sounds like this version is going to be a lot more faithful.

Gordon refreshingly elaborated: “I love the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game, and we aspire to that – but we don't want to tell the exact same story, of course. So something that doesn't break the rules of what it did, but expands. Because I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don't want to just see the same story told – you want extra shades."

And in order to achieve that, the “preparation” for the movie is supposedly complicated. Apparently, the flick will be “very international” and will take Drake and crew “all over the globe”. But who will play the handsome hero? The Fighter star Mark Wahlberg had been attached to the role, but nothing’s decided yet. “I want it to be a great actor,” Gordon beamed. “If it's someone who has an actual jaw, that's even better.”

This isn’t the only PlayStation-themed film currently in production, with Ratchet & Clank and The Last of Us also set to make their big screen debuts in the near future. All three of these brands have the potential to blow up in a big way, but will need to be treated with care. Thankfully, it sounds like the oft-delayed Uncharted movie is finally getting the respect that it deserves.
