With the multi-million selling first-person favourite Battlefield standing toe-to-toe with genre juggernaut Call of Duty, EA has chosen to focus its efforts on the modern military brand – but not without some casualties. Ghost Games UK, which aided production on Need for Speed: Rivals, has been hit by layoffs over the past few days, while a new, unannounced racer in the aforementioned franchise has reportedly been put on indefinite hold.
All efforts by the remaining team are to be focused on an upcoming police-themed Battlefield title due out later this year, suggesting that the series is making the switch to annual instalments. Are you eager for more trigger-happy gunplay, or does the very thought of yearly entries leave you fighting the onset of franchise fatigue? Pop a shot in the comments section below.

Police-themed Battlefield? Who asked for this?
****!!!!!!!!!! NFS Rivals was great and besides Burnout was the only EA franchise worth a **** anymore, now both are gone. But hey we've got more Mass Effect, which nobody is asking for, and Brokenfield on the way. ****ing awesome.
@Gamer83 Thanks for self-censoring, but I've censored a bit more! Careful with the swears — though I do agree with the overall sentiment, to be honest.
No one wants or needs a police-themed Battlefield, EA. Let Dice work on something besides BF for a while, then go back to it later.
@get2sammyb
Sorry I can't properly express how much I HATE this news.
How do they expect to do it annually when they can't even get the regular one working right? From what I hear, anyway.
@ztpayne7 That's what I thought.
Oh EA, would you please stop ruining everything you touch/buy please?
Ruined are my favourite games (Burnout, Tiger, C&C etc), ruined are some of my favourite dev teams (Westwood, Criterion etc) and buggered are many remaining franchises (Sim City, Battlefield, Peggle etc).
Wow I never thought they would want to compete with cod to the point of emulating the annual release BS. I would rather see a new IP rather than a rushed pile of rubbish.
EA better not screw up Star Wars BF you can screw up Battlefield you can screw up Need for Speed but when you screw up Star Wars that's it you've gone to far
Does anyone want a police themes Battlefiled? I'm not sure how they will have the destruction with any kind of believability. Police don't level buildings, at that point the military would probably come in. I can't believe they cancelled NFS either, it's been an annual series for a while now. I hope this just means one entry on the series has been out on hold, because Rivals was a great game.
What the hell is a police themed Battlefiled? And a yearly one at that oh no, if you ask me this is more aimed at Xbox than PlayStation.
Plain stupid. Seriously its just an awful decision. Let cod do whatever and then concentrate on something original however long it takes. I played battlefield 2 I think it was and so so boring. All this fps crud is all pretty much the same stuff churned out year on year. Whilst I can accept it for sports genre titles its just lazy for a fps franchise.
@get2sammyb I don't know, the police theme could open up very interesting multiplayer scenarios. I would hope they continue to support bf4 in tandem with whatever they produce this year.
This could be some sort of need for speed/ battlefield hybrid. Imagine if u could get out of your car in NFS rivals and have a battlefield worthy shootout with the racer you were just chasing. That sounds amazing.
@lvnlavitaloca That's a awesome idea! i'd buy that game if that's wot there makeing
@lvnlavitaloca
I think I'd prefer they keep NFS strictly racing. You're idea isn't a bad one but I think I'd prefer it in a brand new IP.
@Gamer83 I agree, I think the concept would be an awesome new IP, but I doubt need for speed will ever go away, I've been playing it since the 90's. I was thinking more along the lines of what Ubisoft has been doing lately. They have a core team working in a project until the final stages of development then they bring in all their other studios to add to the final product. That is why splinter cell felt kind of assassins-creedy, and why assassins creed now has boats. Its smart to leverage all of your talents and not just have "the fps guys" and "the racing guys".
@get2sammyb @ztpayne7 trying to play BF4 on PS4 is like no other experience I've had on a console. Even when it lets you play, you have the option to decrease your individual latency at the expense of increased "in-game errors." The problem is that each person sees a completely different and unique series of events, so somebody always gets a cheaty boost and gets the kill while another surely lags and dies. Also, the framerate really dips when there's an explosion (including gunfire -_-) so that also inevitably ends up ruining something. And I have a dl speed of over 15 mb/s so I really shouldn't be lagging!
@Savino I'd love a caveman game. Start as a real ape-y guy and survive till you can evolve into -sapiens or something. Develop language and tools and art and religion. Sounds so fun and feasible esp on ps4. Hopefully not a dramatic rendition and from more scientific perspective
Free season passes for all!! They really messed up with this. I own this title for XB1 and I am extremely angry with my purchase and EA. Its unacceptable and poor business and giving angry consumers free passes would be fair and for me would be enough for forgiveness.
shouldn't they actually fix Battlefield 4 before making a new one?
Police themed Battlefield? EA, EA... My dear beloved Battlefield... What have you done to it. It was once great, my memories of 1942 will never die, but post-BF3 you've just milked it, more and more and more, until it's become a carcass of it's former self. Shame really, BC2 was my highlight of the series.
