Japan Studio is too busy with Knack and Puppeteer to focus its efforts on The Last Guardian, director Fumito Ueda has revealed. Breaking his silence for the first time in months, the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus creator told Famitsu magazine that while the game is still in active production, Sony’s Tokyo-based studio is focusing its efforts on the aforementioned mascot platformers for the time being.
"It's under earnest development," the luminary said of the hotly anticipated game. "However, Japan Studio, who's working on The Last Guardian, also has titles like Puppeteer and Knack, and those are taking priority right now." The developer stopped short of sharing any further information, leaving us in limbo until at least the Tokyo Game Show in September.
Unlike smaller outfits, Japan Studio has an enormous workforce that gets rotated around different projects as and when necessary. As such, it’s not enormously surprising that the developer’s focusing on Knack and Puppeteer right now, as both titles are right around the corner. The big question is: will those employees be switching to The Last Guardian once the imminent releases ship? Cross your fingers, toes, and wings.

sad news
I think we're okay with a 2017 release by now lol.
This game is never coming out. So after Puppeteer and Knack what's next.
Freedom Wars
Gravity Rush 2
the Level-5 game?
To take absolutely nothing away from Puppeteer and Knack (they both look like great family friendly games and I'll likely pick up both of them eventually) I can't help but think that focusing on The Last Guardian and making it a PS4 launch title would have made really good business sense and push a few more consoles than Knack will. Don't you think?
i just hope the last guardian becomes a PS4 title, i'd love to play it from the glimpses of it i've seen but i don't own a PS3.
Thar she blows!
I jokingly predicted yesterday they were making this into a Vita title. They might as well at this point.
Somebody tell Ueda the world didn't actually need a DNF replacement.
Back in my day we were looking forward to this game too!
@Squiggle55 I used to think like this, but I've realised they don't need to push launch units at this point. It's sold out (pretty much), and they'll never be able to make enough to satisfy demand.
However, that hype will die down eventually, which is when Sony needs to strike with stuff like The Last Guardian, inFAMOUS, etc. So, I think it's fine that they're focusing on Knack for now.
@get2sammyb That's a really good point. I'm just a little surprised that behind closed doors for the last 2 years nobody in charge said "hey, let's prioritize getting The Last Guardian ready for the PS4 launch window. Lots of people are excited for this one and it will make a big news splash." Instead apparently behind closed doors they decided to intentionally shift resources away from The Last Guardian.
Basically if The Last Guardian somehow miraculously releases next summer, then you are right and it was a genius idea to wait and spread out the momentum. But if it doesn't release until 2015 then I am just flabbergasted that they didn't want to actively try and get this game closer to launch.
It will never live up to its hype now
People think the worst when games gte stuck in development hell. Not without cause, an unreleased game can wind up falling way behind the curve in terms of trends and technology - Duke Nukem Forever is the obvious example of this. But don't forget Ocarina of Time was stuck in development for years before its eventual release... and now it's widely considered one of the best games of all time.
I hope it takes the jump to PS4.
I was kinda critical of the console initially but the PS4 really won me over after E3.
The Last Guardian. Pffft. You silly people. It can't be called The LAST Guardian if it's the first game out for the PS4. It cant be expected until at least 2019 or 2020. Anything sooner would be false advertising.
I just want to know, if they release for PS3 or PS4.
