Shenmue 2

There’s no denying that Dreamcast classic Shenmue and Heavy Rain share similarities. While the two titles are set in completely different worlds, they both aspire to the same cinematic goals. As such, this interview conducted by Camouflaj developer Ryan Payton is particularly fascinating. In it, both SEGA legend Yu Suzuki and Quantic Dream founder David Cage discuss their approaches to game development, and also touch upon the divisive nature of quick time events.

In the clip, Cage explains that he was working on PlayStation 2 adventure Fahrenheit (also known as Indigo Prophecy) at the time of Shenmue’s launch. “When Shenmue released, I thought that we followed the same process and the same thinking,” he says. “We found different solutions, but I thought that we were looking for the same thing – to tell an interactive story.”
