Kaz Hirai

Pack it up, E3 is cancelled – this is the hottest news that we’re likely to post all week. Speaking in an interview with SGNL, former PlayStation boss and current Sony overlord Kaz Hirai has admitted that he actually enjoys being an Internet meme, as he finds that the work that people put into various images and animations “really creative” and a representation of the company’s “global visibility”.

Asked about his status as an online celebrity, an amused Hirai said: “I think that especially with the PlayStation business, I used to get [turned into memes a lot] – even when I was running the PlayStation business in the US. Whether it’s YouTube or other websites, the gaming world has a tendency of really enjoying that.”

He added: “I’ve come to look at it from the perspective of it being really creative, so I enjoy some of the stuff that folks have done. I like to think that the visibility that I get is not visibility for me personally, but in fact a representation of the visibility that Sony gets worldwide, so I’m positive about it.”

For those out of the loop, Hirai’s face has been used as an overlay in GIF images for years – a practice that has been comically dubbed ‘Kazification’. The likeable executive also has his own parody account on Twitter, which frequently kicks up some compelling jokes about the status of the PlayStation business, and Sony overall. It’s nice to know that the gaffer takes it all in his stride.
