Persona 5

Persona 5
Persona 5
Publisher: Atlus / Developer: Atlus Persona Team
Release Date: 31st Mar 2020 (USA) / 31st Mar 2020 (UK/EU)

On a surface level, the core plot of Persona 5 Royal isn't the most original when it comes to gaming, but dig deeper and it's clear that so much thought, time, and effort has gone into defining the characters, themes, and morals of this JRPG masterpiece. This is even more apparent during Royal's newly added third semester, in which the plot wraps up in the most fitting and emotional way possible. This is a 100 hour epic that demands patience and dedication, but the memories will last well beyond the end credits.

Publisher: Ninja Theory / Developer: Ninja Theory
Release Date: 8th Aug 2017 (USA) / 8th Aug 2017 (UK/EU)

Mental health issues are no longer the taboo they once were, but they’re still largely misunderstood. In the harrowing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, developer Ninja Theory uses a combination of gameplay mechanics and incredible performance capture to convey the struggles of its protagonist. It’s one of the most affecting narratives that you’ll find on the PS4, and it sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Bluepoint Games
Release Date: 6th Feb 2018 (USA) / 6th Feb 2018 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

Shadow of the Colossus is easily one of PlayStation's best. The sombre adventure sees Wander felling huge beasts in exchange for the life of a mysterious woman. The eerie quiet of the open world, the overbearing sense of unease, the incredible tussles with giant monsters, the beautiful music — it's an extraordinary game, and its story, like all Fumito Ueda's works, is likely to leave you an emotional wreck.

Journey

Journey
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: thatgamecompany
Release Date: 21st Jul 2015 (USA) / 21st Jul 2015 (UK/EU)

Journey doesn't need words — written or spoken — to tell its story, and that's why it's such a remarkable game. You're free to interpret the meaning behind thatgamecompany's near-perfect outing, but that doesn't stop it from being a powerfully emotive experience. A must-play if you're looking for a completely different style of storytelling on PS4.

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 10th May 2016 (USA) / 10th May 2016 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

We can't talk about single player games on PS4 without mentioning Uncharted, and Drake's last adventure is also his best. Having built up multiple beloved characters throughout the series, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End plays with them all, introduces new faces, and delivers a highly entertaining narrative in typical Naughty Dog style. It's a real class act from top to bottom, with excellent acting, animation, and vastly improved gunplay. If you're after a single player blockbuster that doesn't take dozens of hours to beat, this is the whole package.

Death Stranding

Death Stranding
Death Stranding
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Kojima Productions
Release Date: 8th Nov 2019 (USA) / 8th Nov 2019 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

It's fair to say that Death Stranding, at least initially, is a slow burn. Introduced to the United Cities of America, a list of concepts you can't quite wrap your head around, and Bridge Babies that connect with the land of the dead, it's a whole lot to take on at once. But as Hideo Kojima's trademark style of storytelling comes to the forefront the more you play, the wilder it gets. Narrative-wise, you're not going to find a more fascinating experience than Death Stranding this generation. Rivalling the plot of Metal Gear Solid, its final handful of chapters are something truly unforgettable.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix
Release Date: 4th Dec 2020 (USA) / 4th Dec 2020 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

Dragon Quest XI boasts one of the best told stories in traditional Japanese RPGs. Carried by an excellent cast of charming characters, it's all about the adventure — and what an adventure it is. Now, the main plot may not be the most original tale in gaming, but it's stuffed with so much flavour and wonder. Top it all off with an epilogue of sorts that raises the bar on almost every level, and you've got, for our money, the best Dragon Quest story ever.

Judgment

Judgment

Publisher: SEGA / Developer: Yakuza Studio
Release Date: 25th Jun 2019 (USA) / 25th Jun 2019 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

If you're looking for a detective thriller on PS4, complete with crazy twists and amazing characters, Judgment is the game for you. From the team behind the Yakuza series, this is a spin-off that sees you fill the shoes of Takayuki Yagami, a private detective who operates out of a tiny office in Japan's most infamous (fictional) red light district. Yagami's troubled past is a constant burden as he seeks to lay a gruesome murder case to rest, all while being caught up in a conspiracy that goes much, much deeper than he ever imagined. It's some top tier storytelling from Yakuza Studio.

Publisher: Electronic Arts / Developer: BioWare
Release Date: 14th May 2021 (USA) / 14th May 2021 (UK/EU)
Available On:

Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 return in one fantastic remastered collection. The sci-fi story of Commander Shepard is one of the most beloved sagas in gaming — and with good reason. While the overarching plot isn't anything special — intergalactic doom, oh no! — it's the excellent cast of characters that carries Mass Effect. Some of BioWare's greatest creations reside in these three games, and when they're coupled with a narrative that can change dramatically based on your own actions, you'll struggle to find a more engaging experience on PS4.

The Last of Us Remastered
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: 29th Jul 2014 (USA) / 1st Aug 2014 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Premium

The game which cemented Naughty Dog’s status as one of the industry’s greatest story-tellers, The Last of Us’ tale of parenthood is perhaps one of the most memorable narratives that the industry has ever seen. What truly makes the title standout, though – in addition to the outstanding performances by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson – is how it manages to marry gameplay to its fiction, enhancing the impact of its overall message. Pound for pound, this is still one of the best stories on PlayStation.
