@themcnoisy Well, platformers were kinda everywhere during the 90's. After Sonic hit the scene, a bunch of knockoffs popped up. Eventually the genre got oversaturated and it fell out of favor, outside of the big ones. Even then, platformers don't do as well as they used to. It's been said that platformers in the 90's were like FPS's today.

@kyleforrester87 Your post reminded me of Ratchet & Clank, and now I feel so stupid right now. I coulda put one of those games up. Crack in Time even came out in 2009. But alas, my picks are used. Crap!

Too add to what the post above said, alot of platformers didn't transition well from 2D to 3D. Mario did it well but for every Mario you had a Bubsy. Also Platformers ended up becoming open world games since now games weren't confined to 2D anymore.

If 2006 hasn't been taken yet, I choose to nominate New Super Mario Bros.

Criticise it's sequels all you want, but when it released it was the first brand new Mario platformer on a handheld in over a decade (and maybe the first 2D Mario platformer on any system in just as long). And hey, it is pretty fun to boot.

@themcnoisy: I believe Oddworld: Abes Oddysey, Spyro 2, Rayman 2, Ape Escape etc all released in 1999 so its not as if there isn't any choice...

@RR529: Good pick, the only problem with new smb was its difficulty - far too easy.

@themcnoisy: I've always found the New Super Mario Bros. games rather difficult.. No problems with DKC: Tropical Freeze on the other hand.

I'd nominate Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time for 2009. One of the best overall releases that year for me, and Insomniac had pretty much refined their formula to perfection with it.
