I figured this was probably the most appropriate place to post this. Just today, I was listening to a YouTube retrospective about the Longest Journey saga of video games. Not what I came here for though, but this particular YouTuber mentioned a game I had personally never heard of before: Shadow of Destiny (or Shadow of Memories if European). They mentioned it as being one of the few games they could think of as being at all close to the type of gameplay of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. That instantly intrigued me, since I've often wondered if there are any similar, more niche 3D adventure classics like that I've missed out on. I loved that particular saga, so I'm more than open to trying something of a similar nature.

Then to my point... does anyone have any memory or experience with that particular game? I see it's been re-released a few times since its original release, and even re-dubbed, so I imagine it has somewhat of a cult fanbase. Not sure if it's a far cry to assume one of you might be part of it! What I've read about it thus far has made me incredibly interested. It seems to be a short game as well, so it might just be a fun afternoon distraction to try and experiment with something retro. If anyone has any thoughts or even just fun facts about it, let me know!

I tracked down another nice haul of PS2 games this weekend. Lots of movie licensed titles which I like, a couple of rares and all with their manuals/posters and such. I just have to dust them off a little then they are good to join the collection. Some were never played which is always a bonus.

@GirlVersusGame Whoa! Is that the entire haul in that stack?! Very nicely done!

Also, the original Just Cause on PS2 is so much fun, but for all the wrong reasons. It's like a playable direct-to-video Steven Seagal movie. So ludicrous. Hope you enjoy!

GirlVersusGame

@Werehog Thanks! and yep it's the stack! I tend to buy in bulk and then break them down into my own collection. I'm not trying to complete the whole region 2 collection, just the stuff I want for myself. I do end up playing some retro stuff but mostly it's for preservation, that's why the manuals and posters are so important. Those are usually the first thing to go in so many game boxes and it's great that Sony put some PS2 games on Premium but they aren't doing anything about the old manuals etc and it's so easy to forget how well put together they were. I could probably damage someone if I threw the Halflife one at them. I'll lay them sideways and get a shot of the names before they get put away. I'm always surprised how many games did include posters. Most physical PS5 games I've bought had one slip of paper with basic controls and maybe a DLC code. It probably took another hour to sort through them just because I spent so long reading through the manuals. I've played through the first Just Cause before so that copy is going to a friend along with my double of Mercenaries. I could have sworn the first one was on PS3, maybe there's hope for it showing up in Premium after all.

There's some sorted ones, you should be able to see the spines. They've all been dusted off with make-up wipes and one or too manuals are going in a flower press to make them less crumpled. Lots of SplinterCell and GTA. There are more too but I'm headed out again. I like the uniformity of the the Region 2 cases. Great for OCD.

@GirlVersusGame Wow, nice! Thanks for the closer look!

Fourteen of 'em made me smile. Shout out to a surprise appearance from World War Zero: IronStorm. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time!

Recently I was gutted to have to transfer my PS2 collection into a CD wallet, both for practicality reasons and because a lot of my original PS2 game boxes had degraded over the years (a deadly mixture of age, direct sunlight, and an unfortunate water leak). I was sure to keep all of the manuals and inserts though, and you're absolutely right to sing their praises! Sometimes they had more care and attention paid to them than the games themselves, so there was no way I was gonna discard 'em. The one from Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb was (and still is) a work of art.

Glad you had such a productive weekend, and best of luck with the preservation efforts. Doesn't look like they'll give you too much trouble, they're all in pretty great condition!

@Werehog It's safe to say that I never even heard of it until I saw the box. I try to buy from old stores etc that won't break a collection up. That way I'm not impacting collectors on eBay and other vendors, it keeps the prices more realistic and most people collect out of nostalgia, I don't like to see resellers exploiting that system and pricing collectors out of the hobby. Sorry to hear about your collection. I collect rare books too and so many collectors don't realize how damaged books can get over time, just sunlight like you said can fade the spines and wash the colours out. People talk about disc rot? I've never seen it on any disc I've ever picked up.

The earliest I'll go is PS1 but Sega Megadrive and the Snes look so tempting sometimes. The box-art and the colours pop so much, PS5 is good but the aesthetic seems a little sterile and flat at times. Companies probably know they don't have to put that much effort in anymore with such a big digital market and there's so much publicity before it goes on the shelf that they know it will sell. Fourteen is a lot more than I expected, I'm going to guess that one is Cold Fear. I don't see that often. Stuntman is great too, there hasn't been anything like it since. Maybe Teardown but that's a stretch. I forget there was a sequel to Stuntman too. I think my favorite PS2 games are probably the original SSX games, they really need a remaster. Was the leak a water tank or something? that happened to a friend before, they had to replace the floor after the water warped the floorboards. It wasn't just one room either, it seeped into different rooms.

There's some more, almost all are doubles. The thing I find with Scarface is either the plastic sleeve is almost always yellowed of the steelcase has some light rust. Airblade was kind of cool too, definitely inspired by Back to the Future. I'm always happy to see Tokyo Extreme Racer again too, it has a brilliant soundtrack. I feel like I completely missed SSX on Tour too, I had to do some Google'ing. Did you ever consider trying to get back up covers and cases for the damaged ones? You could probably find scans online and print them out.

@GirlVersusGame This is something I do miss since I moved to PC gaming for the most part. A big stack of games you can occasionally fawn at and feel good for yourself about! Mighty impressive collection you got there. Love to see some Hitman: Blood Money in it! Just out of curiosity, I wanted to ask what's up with the spines that have the colours reversed? Like how Dead or Alive 2 for example has space with the title black as opposed to white? I've never owned a PS2 myself, so if there's some obvious explanation for it, I'm not aware of it! Are they special editions or something?

GirlVersusGame

@Tjuz Oh that's the PS2 Platinum Collection, most of those games are already gone. I double checked that I had them already and bundled them up for a friend as an early Christmas stocking stuffer. The original Platinum Collection on PS1 were silver too. They also had the Essentials Collection.

Taken from the wiki.
To become a Platinum release it was required that a game must sell over 400,000 copies within a year.

Platinum Range titles were recognisable by a platinum/silver coloured band on the game's casing, both the front and the spine. The PlayStation design used the same logo that was introduced in early 1997 for all PAL region game cases,[11] the differences being the colouring and that it indicates itself as Platinum. The PlayStation 2 design of the platinum games had a silver band to act as a border and to contain the game's original cover, which is shrunk to fill about 75% of the platinum cover. The early platinum games that were released prior to 2003 had the PlayStation logo repeated twice on the front case, once on the platinum border, and once on the original game's case. (with the original game's case dropping the PlayStation logo after 2002.) In 2005, a new featured layout was introduced; these have a black border, and silver outlines around the shrunken original game cover.

I really like the Hitman games but not for the reason you might think lol The devs do some of the best environmental work and really understand the interiors and structural architecture. You can trace it all the way back to the original game, I think they were one of the studios to give a realistic look to clothing moving with the character too (Hitman 2) Like how a coat would naturally move as the character moved. There was a game on PC that did it too but I think they were first and sold the technology to fund even more Hitman games. I like all of the games in the series apart from Hitman Absolution, they pretty much threw stealth out of the window and made it into a faster pace action game. Blood Money is probably the best one on PS2. I know people are hyped for First Light and I get that the studio are probably fatigued from The World of Assassination series, I hope they aren't done with Hitman.

@GirlVersusGame Ah, I see! I suppose the "Greatest Hits" equivalent that you had for the PS4. It always pissed me off that those game cases had a red spine! They looked so unfitting with the rest of the collection, and if you missed them in the original print, there was no way to get a new copy with the normal styling (to my knowledge). I'm sure your friend was highly appreciative that you were able to gift them these!

Haha, well, it's better to appreciate Hitman for its technical achievements than nothing at all! The level design and detail put in those games is truly impressive. Blood Money remains my favourite, but that might also just be a case of having been at the right place at the right time. I can recognise that the trilogy for modern consoles are mechanically and graphically better in every way, but they somehow just didn't quite hit the spot for me as much. I still played through the entirety of the second game though, and at least some of the first. Absolution was a total misfire as you say. I've never gotten past the first two levels of that one either. At least they recovered!

Me neither. Great approach, and big respect for your reasoning!

Thanks, but it's okay. It was a rare set of circumstances for me, because I usually like keeping my stuff in good condition, and always handle everything (especially discs) with great care. Back in my university days, I'd trade in games for new ones, and the staff in the high street stores were always super-impressed with how pristine the discs were whenever I handed them over!

Yes! Completely agree! Games don't need shelf presence nowadays. I mean, some of those older games were borderline false advertising with some of their cover art, but it was all so creative and striking. I think the PS2 era was my favourite for cover art (when gaming was starting to become really super-big business) but the MegaDrive era had some great stuff, too.

Nope, never played Cold Fear before! Although I know of it, thanks to gaming magazines and other coverage from that era. Speaking of magazines, one did come with a demo of the first Stuntman, so I have played that and agree, it was a really unique concept which I'd love to see revisited someday. The SSX games were great. I can go even further back to the Cool Boarders series on PSone, but those games ain't a patch on how well SSX nailed the formula.

Upstairs neighbours left a bath running and it overflowed. Yep, water leaks are nasty!

It's a good idea (and I appreciate the suggestion) but honestly, I was starting to run out of shelf space anyway, so on the day one of the worst cases finally gave up and disintegrated in my hands, I just kinda sighed, bit the bullet, and purchased a large blue CD wallet. Like I said, I could save the manuals, and that was enough for me. I can always browse those scans online whenever the fancy takes me.

Thanks again for sharing the rest of your haul, too! Add the Metal Gear Solid and Hitman games to those previous fourteen, as well as the original SSX. Don't think I remember AirBlade (at least by its title alone) so I'll look that up later, as you make it sound neat!

@Werehog I know the Stuntman Demo you mean, it came with an issue of Official Playstation UK. They did some other single discs like Resident Evil 2 and Tekken 3 that didn't always end up on magazines unless they were bundled with other Demos. I kept all of the discs but not the magazines, something I regret now. I have all of the old discs that came with the consoles, the variants too. I never thought we'd need a paid subscription service just to play the demo of a game. I'm sure they did some other single disc Demos for the magazine but I can't remember. I think I have 1 to 80 and dropped off there. The best will always be Silent Hill with the original PS1 Metal Gear Solid, the second best might be the Metal Gear Solid 2 tanker Demo that came with Zone of Enders on PS2. The UK magazine also did a special edition Metal Gear Solid Demo, I'm assuming I kept that too. I couldn't name even one PS5 Demo, it would be 100% guess work.

@GirlVersusGame Similarly, I also have some of those Official PlayStation Magazine demo discs knocking about somewhere, although unfortunately I didn't keep all of them. I definitely have the one with the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo (which is what's responsible for me being a fan of the series, played that so freakin' much) and maybe the one with Stuntman. PaRappa the Rapper 2 is also another memorable demo I enjoyed replaying (and funnily enough, when I finally got to play the full game years later, none of the other songs hit as right as that opening number).

I think I've also got some DVDs from some unofficial PlayStation magazines that are filled with game and movie trailers, trade show footage, and developer interviews. They're kinda cool throwbacks, if nothing else (although some of them are painfully "early 2000s gamer culture" in their execution).
