If you got a PS3/2/1 disc & could just put it in your PS5/4 and stream the games without a paywall . Discs are borderline useless nowadays beyond being a license right ? so why can’t $o- whoops , i mean , Sony let us access Ps3(2/1) games we already got without having to move around things and hook up old systems or pay for premium ??

always money.

some old games are what 50p?

in an ideal world its a good idea. in the real world sadly it wont.

plus honestly Sony dont want you playing ps3 etc games. extra to premium is 2quid or so a month extra, barely anything they want you to have to get these 70 games. not think i wont buy XYZ ill play classics instead.

@Eagly it’s better than not being able to play your games at all though without paying. real BC for ps3 and older is never gonna happen with sony

The only route I could see corporate Sony go with the desired BC is if they included a PS3 emulator program as part of PS+ Premium tier. Previous titles purchased or acquired through the PS+ service on PS3/Vita/PSP could then be redeemed and downloaded again, same with the classic PS1 & 2 digital titles.

But yeah, they don't want to spend the extra $$ to put in the PS1 & 2's lasers again so disc reading won't happen again. Even on the Xbox the disc redemption is not perfect, got the Dreamcast collection and all but 1 game was downloadable on the Xbone since there isn't a digital license available for Space Channel 5. Having digital licenses tied to discs of older games would be too much work without payback in their eyes.

I don't think ps4 can read cd roms only dvd and blueray so, regardless of what Sony does, I don't see it ever happen. All ps3 models can read and emulate ps1 games regardless of if you have bought them via psn.

Bit of a late reply but this is absolutely not how PS Plus streaming works in the slightest. It connects you to a machine that is running your game, therefore there would have to be a machine on their servers that contained the files for every single game to ever release on PS1/2/3 to account for any disc you put in. Which would then run into the same licensing issues that stop them from putting every game on PS Plus in the first place.

@nessisonett i know . the discs we already own would serve as the new “paywall” to access said machines that has those particular games available

And not to be pedantic, but PS NOW doesn't even exist even more. Lolz.

As mentioned the PS4/5 can’t even read those games.
I imagine most of us are ‘older’ gamers but for Sony to implement a disc drive that was able to read all those games would probably raise the overall price by like $20.

Now how many people would actually use this feature? Assuming the PS5 sells 100million units & 5% use this feature (which is probably way excessive) that’s 95million units that were sold at a higher price.
Sony want to keep the price low, as it’s more attractive.

Sony aren’t MS. MS have already stated that they lose $100-$200/Xbox series console. Never going to happen.

Emulation will happen one day the big problem is that Sony mandates trophy support for all games. Every single game would have to be patched unless they change their tune.
That the reason we don’t have a wider spread of PS1/2 games & PS3 emulation is still a long way away I imagine.

@nomither6 That isn’t how licensing works. No matter what kind of paywall the consumer faces, Sony would need to have every game ever released on a streamable console somewhere, which would require them to contact the license holder of those games. Some of whom don’t exist anymore.

I think it’s a good idea, for games that are already on (ex-Now). Put in the disc and it lets you stream for free. If the PS5 literally can’t read PS3 discs at all, then obviously it’s a non-starter. But who knows (maybe someone does?) if there is a software update that could be released so PS5 can at least recognise the game title of the disc that’s been put in.

Of course games that are not on the service wouldn’t be possible.

Tbh isn’t that how Xbox back compatibility works, if the game is on the servers you put in your disc and download a HD version of the full game to play?

@kyleforrester87 that’s what’s i’m saying & i’m not sure how it works on Xbox these days but back when i had one , you needed an internet connection for backwards compatibility to work

@Fight_Teza_Fight wish it was as simple as rolling out an update that could atleast allow the ps5 to read that said game is a ps3 disc at minimum and then send the data to the server to unlock the streamable game to the user

it doesn’t have to be all PS games , im mainly talking about ps3 games if i didn’t specify already
