I don't have a Wii U but If I did the games that would be top of my list is Bayonetta 2 (Ideally with the first one bundled in too) Smash Bros since that's nearly out & usually never fails to deliver. Zelda: Wind Waker, Mario 3D World, Wonderful 101 & Pikmin 3. Hope this helps mate.

The Wonderful 101, imagine Pikmin with the bright colours of Power Rangers and add that all to brilliant boss battles and extremely fluid combat.

NintendoLand is a shout if you have a few people round. Solo it's a bit boring but with friends it's great. Also any game Nintendo have made, as always.

Nobody mentioned it yet, but Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is a great game.

I own a WiiU, so my strong suggestion are:

- Bayonetta 2 (+1 if you didn't played it)
- Mario Kart 8
- Supermario 3d World
- The Wonderful 101
- Pikmin 3
- Raiman Legend (The WiiU version is the version to be)
- WiiU partyU: if you plan to have friends at home and getting 4 controller, is a very funny party game.

I strongly recommend you to get also a gamepad Pro with the console, cos on WiiU many games are great to be played in couch-coop

I highly recommend Super Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and EarthBound (Virtual Console, only really if you like retro RPGs). Smash Bros is shaping up to be arguably the best game on the system, too.

I thought I typed DKCTF seeing as it is one of my favourite games on Wii U and in general.

@gamer83

agreed, how did we not remember

Speaks to how underrated the U's lineup is. That said, most of the games are not for me. I tried but couldn't get into Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Lego City was ok but I'd rather play GTA V or Sleeping Dogs, even Mario Kart 8 I wasn't as big a fan of as I thought I'd be. Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2 and DKC though are worth it alone, and soon I'm sure Smash will be joining that list. Smash 3DS is awesome and that game is really just the appetizer before the main course.

I see most of the great games have already been covered, with the exception of eShop games.

In there I recommend Scram Kitty and his buddy on rails, Shovel Knight, Stealth Inc 2, and you may like the NES Remix games too.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Thanks a lot! Heard a lot about shovelknight. The reason im buying a Wii U is that its getting much better first party support than both the One and the ps4 .. Disasterclub was the thing that convinced me next gen is going to be Wii U. That and couch co op with friends playing smash in my New apartment is fantastic!

I love my Wii U about the same as some of these other people...really like Wind Waker, MK8, Mario, etc and I'm very excited about Smash, Zelda...etc....but I did want to point out if you were considering the first party support of the Wii U at the same time in its lifespan as the PS4 or Xbox One is now, you'd be getting very similar reports.  It takes time to develop good games for a new system.

It's already been mentioned but I recommend Super Mario 3D World.  New Super Mario Bros. U is pretty fun as well.

Yeah I agree with all that have said so far, my favorites being MK8 and Super Mario 3D World.

That said there are some awesome VC games available from the eShop.  Mainly if you haven't played I suggest the GBA Castlevania games especially Aria of Sorrow, and also the Mega Man and Mega Man X series .  From the eshop I also suggest Ducktales Remastered as well.

Hope you enjoy your new system.

@Sanquine

Take my recommendations- I have impeccable taste in gaming as we all know

Well, since you'll already have Mario Kart 8, I will list the other games that you absolutely cannot miss under any circumstance whatsoever.

MUST-PLAY NOMATTER WHATS

1) Pikmin 3. Do not underestimate this game or misjudge it by its aesthetics. Pikmin 3 is a triumph and the pinnacle of Miamoto's career as a developer. I've never played anything like it- the feeling I got after completing this game was unlike anything I've felt in many years. I have yet to speak with someone who does not love this game (except perhaps @Gamer83 but he doesn't really like Nintendo games lol) and btw, make sure you play with a Wiimote in hand with the gamepad in your lap- the way it was meant to be played.

2) Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. My favorite video game of all time. Ever. EVER. There is a reason Monster Hunter is such a cult phenomenon- the games are absolutely superb, and this is the best entry to date, AND it's in HD with a popping online community. Do not miss this game at any cost. If you need some coaching, I will be happy to play online with you and show you the ropes as someone once did for me.

3) DKC Tropical Freeze. The original trilogy stands as some of the best games ever made, yet this one trumps them all. Levels designed to perfection, time trials with video uploads, and flat out one of the best platformers I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Skip NSMBU, and go straight for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.

4) Bayonetta 2. This one speaks for itself. Not only do you get the critically acclaimed sequel, you get a separate disc with the first game as well. Both of them absolutely superb, and every ounce as good as people claim they are. You want to play GotY 2014? Look no further than Bayonetta 2. You'll thank me later...

5) The Wonderful 101. Like Bayonetta 1 and 2, this is another Platinum masterpiece on Wii U. The game is excellent, and provides some of the best use of the second screen of any game to date, EVEN IF you use the analog to draw Unite Morphs instead of the gamepad (and I highly recommend you use the analog). Dual screen puzzles, real time menus and interfaces. In one spot of the game you'll simultaneously fly a ship through space on the TV fighting enemies while engaging in hand to hand combat INSIDE THE SHIP on the gamepad. Listen to me, you want this game.

6) Super Mario 3D World. One of the highest rated games on the Wii U, and for good reason. People talk a lot of crap about Mario, but I dare you to play this game and not love it. It's just a flat out amazing game in every way, and can offer quite the challenge in the later levels. This game single-handedly justifies playing Nintendo. Don't make the mistake of passing this one up.

7) Zelda The Windwaker. I'm not sure if you've ever played a Zelda game before, but they are some of the best games ever made, and WW is no exception. The game looks gorgeous for a remake, and the gamepad allows you to manage inventory on the fly, switching to a boomerang or whatever you need without pausing the game. This one is a classic. And any Wii U owner should have it in their collection.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

1) Hyrule Warriors. The only reason I didn't list this as a must-have is because your enjoyment will be partially dependent on whether or not you are a Zelda fan. Even if you're not a fan, is a really great game. I think a lot of people were not expecting it to be as good as it is. If you ARE a Zelda fan, you're going to absolutely love it. Either way, don't make the mistake a lot of others have made by dismissing this game due to Dynasty Warriors gameplay. I enjoyed it so much I'm now considering buying Dynasty Warriors games.

2) Rayman Legends. Yes, this game is on every other console you own. But, it was meant to be played on the Wii U with the gamepad. Murphy levels on the touch screen with the precision a stylus provide some of the most engaging platforming I've experienced in quite a while. It's just a really great game. Not as good as DKC, but on par with NSMBU I'd say.

3) New Super Mario Bros U. While this game may not be able to stand up to the likes of DKC, it is by no means a bad game. On the contrary, this is easily the best 2D Mario platformer since SMW on the SNES, and while it may be familiar territory, that makes it no less a great game. In fact, it's a great game, and don't forget the challenging New Super Luigi U DLC which makes it even better. Mario gets a lot of hate, but if I had to wager a bet, it's that you would definitely enjoy this game. Who doesn't like 2D Mario in HD?

4) Wii Sports Club Golf. This game gets a lot of hate, and some of that is warranted when it comes to the other sports. But golf defies all expectations and stands above the rest as one of the most enjoyable golfing experiences ever devised. Lie the gamepad on the floor and see the ball on the grass with the end of your club, then use a Wiimote to swing the club and hit the ball off the gamepad and into the TV screen. The angle you hold the Wiimote will affect how much the ball curves left or right, and you can even apply topspin or backspin with the way you swing. And not only do you get the original course from the first Wii Sports, you get the Wii Sports Resort course AND the crazy course from NES Golf back on the NES. For $10 you really couldn't ask for much more.

eSHOP EXCLUSIVES

1) Pushmo World. This one is 100% first party Nintendo, and the quality shows it. If you like puzzle games don't pass this one up. One of the best offerings on the eShop, and has user created levels and sharing with 3DS games Pushmo and Crashmo. Even generate QR codes which can be scanned via the gamepad or 3DS system to share between the two.

2) Stealth Inc 2. If you've played the first one on PS, you already know this is a fantastic game. With excellent gamepad integration and co-op, you're likely to get more than your moneys worth with this one.

3) Shovel Knight. If ya haven't heard, ask somebody. Shovel Knight delivers, and it does so in spades. Nuff said.

4) Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails. Again, don't let the cheerful aesthetics fool you. This is a very unique and challenging game, and I highly suggest you do some research and watch some gameplay videos. It's different, but it's very enjoyable. High skill and precision are good traits to have if you plan on beating this one.

5) Armillo. Words cannot express how much I love this game. It reminds me of something straight from the N64 era, only better. This game has very high production values and could have passed for a full retail title back in the GameCube era. Fuzzy Wuzzy Games had created a masterpiece with Armillo, and there is already a small dedicated fan base. Please, do yourself a favor and pick up this game. They have opted to sell the game for half the price most indies sell their games for. I think it's like $6, but could have easily sold for $20 and up. That's just how good the game is.

VIRTUAL CONSOLE GOODIES

1) Super Metroid (SNES)
2) Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
3) Mega Man 2 (NES)
4) Mega Man 3 (NES)
5) Mega Man X (SNES)
6) Super Mario World (SNES)
7) Zelda Link to the Past (SNES)
8) F-Zero (SNES)
9) Earthbound (SNES)
10) Metroid Fusion (GBA)
11) Advance Wars (GBA)
12) Yoshi's Island (GBA)
13) Zelda Minish Cap (GBA)
14) Castlevania Circle of the Moon (GBA)
15) Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance (GBA)
16) Castlevania Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
