I'm currently using a Dualshock 2 on a PS2 slim to play PS1 games, but then I tried a PS1 mini and thought the d-pad was better on that. I also have a Logitech wireless PS2 controller and can play on my PS3 with a Dualshock 3 or a Dualsense. I'd prefer to use my PS2 though since it's hooked up to my CRT.
I'm wanting to play both 3D and 2D games with it, but if the game works with analog controls, I'll probably end up using the sticks on my Dualshock 2 instead, so it doesn't need to have good sticks.
I'd also prefer to not have to buy an adapter (to say connect a SNES controller or something). I've had issues with lag with other adapters and it would cost more. I'm mainly looking for something budget friendly, not like $50 or something.
Are the original PS1 d-pads as good as the PS1 mini's? And are there any other controllers with good d-pads out there?
The correct answer is the Vita! My personal favourite D-Pad. I’ve heard lots of good things about the Saturn’s D-Pad but yeah, that would require an adapter. Maybe just find an original PS1 controller?
Is the d-pad any different between the Dualshock 1 and the original controller? Also, what about this Dual Analogue controller I've been hearing about? I think it's the one that was released between the original and the Dualshock.
I ended up getting one of the original PS1 controllers. It works well, except that the cord is a tad shorter, so I have to move my PS2 off the shelf it's on a little.
While it seems like you already made your decision, just wanted to at least respond to your other question. What I noticed on the original PS1 controller is the D-pad feels a bit looser, springy whilst on the Dualshock the D-pad buttons are pressed in more, and feel a bit firm. To me, the Dualshock D-pad feels nicer for sliding your fingers over the buttons or if you needed to press more than 1 button at a time. But this is the minimal difference so just throwing that out there in case you feel like getting the Dualshock in the future.

That's good to know about. The longer handles might be nice as well as the concave sticks. I'm not sure I like the lack of rubber on the sticks though. That's one thing that bugged me about the official N64 controller.
