Topic: Ever sell a game, or console you regret selling later on?

I am sure as many of us have had our reasons for selling/trading a game or console at some point in our lives. Maybe it was for necessity like maybe you needed the cash for something else while in between jobs. Maybe it was for a new venture in life like marriage, moving or a new child, maybe it was just at that time in your life you weren't into gaming, or heck maybe it was just to get the newest game or console itself. Point is I am sure we all have one or maybe a few we regret getting rid of, I know I do. I thought it would be interesting to share what we may have regretted getting rid of. Why did you get rid of it did you buy it back at some point?

Right now I am regretting getting rid of GTA V on PS4 At the time I got rid of it I wasn't playing it much mainly cause I finished it not that long ago on the 360 and I needed the room on my PS4 for other games that I wanted to play more, so I traded it in at a local game store for credit. Lately I want to play it again but for a game that has been out for about 4 years it still is priced high. I am hoping that soon it will hit $20 either on a sale or permanent. I mean I have seen games like Sleeping Dogs which came out after GTA V going for $20 not sure why GTA is still $50.

In the past I regretted selling my PS2 (which is why I don't sell consoles anymore). Long story short I needed the money since I was between jobs so I sold it off along with my games around 30 to 40. Not long afterwards I got a job and soon regretted selling it. I eventually rebought a PS2 but it was the slim model. After going through 4 of those I really regretted selling my original fat one. I finally got another fat PS2 a few years ago which I still have but selling my original one boy did I regret that for years.

I have sold many a console/games in the past the fund things like holidays or xmas presents for my kids.we don't have much extra cash after the bills have been paid and there are times When I have had sell my games, my kids come first, gaming second.

last year I sold all my retro consoles and games to fund towards a holiday with the family in the sun, the kids had never been abroad and holding onto old games that were never played with or gathering dust were of little value sitting in the loft for years.

I'd sell my liver if I had to for the greater good 😜

I've sold a lot of my retro consoles and games over the years. At a time about six or seven years ago when I wasn't gaming I sold a lot of my old Retro systems - I sold the PS1, Gamecube, PS2 and an Atari Jaguar. I regret selling all of them now but at the same time, I am not sure I would play them. I did keep the controller from the GC and some games to play on the Wii but from a collection stand point I wished I hadn't. Then again, we were having our first child, we needed room and a bit of cash and I wasn't playing them (they weren't even hooked up) and gaming wasn't doing it for me (plus I had a Wii and 360 hooked up).

I would have kept the GC I think, just because I loved the form factor for the console and I had the jetblack one.

As for games - I sold off Resi Evil 4 for GC as I had it for wii plus all the Resi evil games for (1, 2, 3 and 0) for GC. They were quite rare and I made a fair bit of coin on them but they looked soooo good on my shelf.

Never going to sell my original NES or SNES or GB though. They have too many memories, even if they stop working.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

Generally, I have only sold or traded a console to get another version of it - for example my Original Xbox was traded in to get a Crystal version. I also traded in my original Xbox 360 to get the 'Elite' which I then sold after getting the Slim (with Kinect). I still have my Day 1 PS3 - I couldn't really sell that with YLOD...

As such, I can't really regret any of these decisions. Its not like I suddenly lost access to my games. Some of my older devices were either giving to my kids or thrown away. The boxes of games - mostly on Cassettes, were also thrown away. They had been in a loft for upto 30yrs (maybe more) and I never had any intention to try and see if they would still work. I had to move very quickly so didn't have time to try and sell and like I said couldn't guarantee they still worked. The fact they had been sat in a loft, never going to be used or see the light of day again, I don't regret seeing them go although I guess it would have been better to have sold them as seen than to throw them away.

In my life, I have only sold 1 console that was not being 'replaced' by a newer version and its games too. I kind of regret it - although not much at all. That was my Nintendo Virtual Boy - Pristine and boxed, inc all paperwork etc with 3/4 games. The only reason I 'kind of' regret it was because I think it would be more of an asset and be worth more now. I knew very quickly that I would not get use from this - it really was a migraine inducing, eye hurting experience. I couldn't use it for more than 5mins and that was pushing it so I don't regret selling it from the perspective that I miss gaming on it.

Despite rarely getting rid of old consoles and games, I still have my last 15/16yrs of gaming (consoles and games) - apart from my DSi which I gave to my Son (still have my Gameboy Colour somewhere and a few games). I tend to be much more focused on the 'present' generation and future games. I really don't get that nostalgic or have a desire to jump into old games - even those from last gen. Its not as if my PS3 or XB360 have been packed away (yet) and the games are still on the shelf too - the older gen have never been unpacked in the 5yrs I have been in my current house though. Even games I have bought that I didn't like or get on with, I still kept.

I guess I am much more of a hoarder so I don't really have any regrets with selling/trading games or consoles. The only console I have ever sold that was not replaced, I couldn't physically use anyway and would only of held on to it to sell at a later date to some collector of rare consoles...

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@marston1983 I can certainly understand where you're coming from. Being a divorced father my money is tight at times especially where I live. I have thought many times of selling off parts of my collection for financial reasons but I just know I will regret it later. However I think part of the reason too is my son enjoys collecting and having the retro consoles too and everytime I bringing it up to him he actually gets upset.

@Rudy_Manchego I agree with the Gamecube. The form is so simple and I know alot of people say it looks kiddie and toy like especially when compared to the PS2 and Xbox but I like it as well. Now my Gamecube I did sell and but that was cause two controller ports didn't work anymore and I didn't know how to fix it so I sold it as is to a retro game shop in my town. I have a Wii to play my GC games on but oddly I prefer the look of the GC over the Wii.

@Tasuki Me too - I rarely seem to use the Wii to play GC games despite it being set up in the spare room. The GC was my favourite console of the generation, maybe it is a nostalgia thing as my wife (then GF) bought it for me for my Birthday and it was my first 'brand new' console since the SNES (my PS1, N64 and PS2 were either second hand or got late in the day). Plus, some great games like Mario Sunshine, Metriod, Resi 4 etc.

I have a habit of handing my consoles over to other people. When the PS3 came out, and I eventually stopped playing my PS2, I passed it along to my sister who didn't have a huge interest in games but wanted a DVD player for her room.

When I got my PS4, I did keep my PS3 for a little while, but eventually decided to give it to my Dad for Father's Day, because his PS3 had broken and I had a bunch of PS3 games I thought he'd like.

I sometimes really wish I still had them, though. Occasionally I'll get a real urge to play an older game, and for the most part I can't. I have my Vita, which takes care of the majority of my PS1 hankerings, but PS2 games are out of reach. If I had the space I would totally keep every machine and every game!

The Wii. Won't go into why I did it because there really wasn't a good reason to get rid of it. The decision to do so was especially stupid considering all the VC stuff I bought for it. Ugh.

Octane

Still have everything, despite the fact that some games/systems don't even work anymore. Even all the cheap third party junk, still stored somewhere in a box.

I gave my Dreamcast away which I regret as I really liked that console. I also lent my Amiga out and never got it back which hurt a lot. I haven't got rid of a system and rarely sell any games since the Dreamcast though.

@KratosMD
Nope, sold my Wii to help payoff my PS4. I had reasoned that because I wasn't using it much at the time, it was mostly useless. Looking back, very stupid decision.

Plenty of times. I've sold several games just to get more games because money was tight. Looking back, the returns weren't worth it.

Kingdom Hearts, Gran Turismo 3, all my DBZ games, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, Tekken Tag Tournament are among the PS2 games I've sold, I've also sold most of my Mario games because they were the only ones that would give decent money back. I only have Mario Galaxy and NSMB Wii. My collection looks pretty bare compared to others.

I pretty much never get rid of my games anymore unless I didn't like the game.

@Gamer83 I was the same with my N64. Sold it and a bunch of games to get a Gamecube. Yeah there weren't no digital games on it of course but I was kinda in thense boat. I figured I am not using it alot anymore and with a Gamecube, why would I need it. Sold alot of great games with it too. A bunch of the WWE games, WCW games, Mischief Makers, MK64, GoldenEye and a tons more. What was even sad is I didn't even get enough to fully pay for a GC. Came to regret that one quickly even though I loved the GC.

I regret selling my PS3. Loads of games, best console I've ever owned. Sold it because I needed some cash for PS4. But, I had a blast with PS3. All in my memory now.

Why regret when you can get most of the consoles mentioned in cex? I just checked for y'all
GC £35
Wii £22
Ps2 £35
Some rare/expensive games, ok that's regrettable (I probably shouldn't have sold Shadow of the Colossus) but that's why we have emulation!

I regret buying a psp E-1000, wish I had known the difference and got the 3000 instead, or just got a Vita straight away.
I slightly regret buying too many games in general over the years, especially the last 5/6 years which have been crazy. I don't regret spending the money, just that what with new releases it is unlikely at this point that I will ever finish them all.
I have over 300 on steam, about the same on 360, about 70 on Wii, about 100 on ps3. Another 100 on ps4. About 70 on Vita. 30 each on psp, ds and maybe 10 on 3ds.
Sold all previous gen stuff to get Xbox 360.
That's over 1000 games, not counting emulators. I have made my peace with not being able to finish them all (how do you 'finish' civilisation? Street fighter 4? Minecraft?), but there are many I've never even started. I'm not too bothered.
It's not a 'back log' (I despise that phrase and its current usage in gaming) - it's a collection. I've not fully read every book I own, or watched every DVD, and I don't beat myself with the 'backlog' stick over those either.

I'll stop now as I'm getting off topic.

@CountFunkula78 'how do you 'finish' civilisation?'

Vote Conservative.

LOL. Back on topic I think it's more the case of not being able to throw on a game you like whenever you want. Recently I've been wanting to play ff7, MGS and Pes on the ps1, but as they are not in my house I won't have that urge to play them for some time and kinda wish I had them hidden away somewhere. I have been loaned a ps1 and it would be nice to hit the old games up.

I gave up my N64 too but it was to a family member and I still got to play it so don't really have regrets about that one. But yeah, this is something that happens a lot. I'm an impulse buyer and so are a fair few of my friends. We don't always think longterm. My biggest regret was I had Sin & Punishment on the Virtual Console, don't know if there's anyway to ever get that again unless Nintendo makes the Switch Virtual Console not suck.
