@psmr Interesting. I can honestly say that getting a 5Pro has rendered me basically uninterested in a PS6 until at least 2028-2029. I imagine PSSR will only get better with time as well.

Edit: Oh, and congrats on getting through The Witcher 3! Glad to hear it turned out to be a positive experience. Where does Cyberpunk fall on the docket? 😉

@Metonymy I hear you. Getting a Pro prior to the price being raised (let’s be honest anyone with half a brain cell could see the way it was gonna go what with component prices) just seemed a no brainer. The AI upscaler kinda future proofs it somewhat (specially if they get the frame boost going that was suggested in the recent patent) and who knows what the 6 will cost by the time it eventually arrives?

I was never interested in a 4 Pro but as soon as Cerny explained the rationale behind the 5 Pro (fidelity visuals but with performance frames) it was exactly what I wanted from it.

Cheers about The Witcher dude. It sounds stupid but part of the reason I’m so glad that I ended up liking it is due to my knowing what a special place many people like yourself (& many others) have for it. Nothing worse than having some bonehead cuss out one of your faves 😄. And I’m really keen to sample the delights of Night City… it’s gonna have to wait a while longer though as I’ve heard tell that there’s a little open-world game of absolutely no consequence whatsoever due out next month and I’ll be playing the hell out of that! So all other open-world games are on immediate hiatus 😉. Obviously I know how you feel about The Witcher but what are your thoughts on Cyberpunk?

@psmr noice! When did you play The Witcher 3? We would definitley have burned you alive if you didn't like it for any reason because everyone has to like the same things... or else.

As for the pro, I remember a bunch of people on here that got it at launch were basically told they have no brains because the internet declared it didn't really do anything. Turns out selling a ps5 and replacing it with a new console wasn't that bad an idea after all.

Selling and upgrading is actually always pretty viable with PS too, as second hand retains value if you take care of your stuff. Second hand prices are currently pretty inflated too, so... if people like to stay under warranty and would rather let another buyer deal with their older consoles, it is still kind of worth it if you can get a new one for a good price when they are in stock. GTA launch week prices will peak so it might actually be a good time for a side-grade/warranty and age upgrade for launch day adopters.

@Ravix just finished off the platinum on it yesterday mate. Took me a little over two week of solid play… but I did do two playthroughs in fairness. Tbh I wasn’t feeling it for like 20 hours but something clicked during my third session and it’s ended up hovering around my top ten of all-time… and pretty excited about what happens in 4!

So I didn’t trade my launch day PS5 in tbh, I just happened to see the Pro for £570 in Argos late last year… and pounced like a middle-aged welsh tabby-tom. I’m glad I kept my base PS5 too though, as I do like the option of gaming in the lounge if the missus fancies watching (she refuses to sit in my office chair as it’s too uncomfortable for her).

@psmr Exactly, and with just how cross-gen releases have become, it makes less sense than ever to me to jump into next-gen early. That said, there are so many variables at play. I was going to respond to the vote on the the site yesterday about paying $1000 for a PS6 but it’s an impossible thing to answer. The core concept of value itself is hard enough to quantify let alone whatever may be happening economically at the time. For all I know, a loaf of bread will cost $1000 in 2029!

I was actually playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at the time (actually I’m still playing it - very slowly) and the hit to resolution for performance mode was undeniable. It’s what convinced me. -Edit: I should say ‘initially’ convinced me as it was the rapidly increasing prices and general market uncertainty that sealed the deal!

Yeah, I often struggle with how to approach critiquing things here as it’s never my intention to just crap on something somebody else enjoys, and I think that’s most people here. I try to approach things from a place of constructive criticism. Typically, the more criticism I have comes from being impassioned by what was done so well.

Can’t imagine what this mystery game you’re alluding to could be but I’m sure there will be absolutely no questionable work absences, unusual relationships strife, puddle-gate level controversies or general economic impact whatsoever in the immediate weeks after its release!

Without getting too excited, for me Cyberpunk 2077 is up there as one of the all time greats.

@Metonymy @psmr @Ravix Just thought I’d chime in on as part of the “Pro Club” that I am so glad to have nabbed a PS5 Pro back when I did, which was right when they announced the first price hike and RAMageddon was naught but a future unknown dream. I can’t remember what the launch price was but I got it for even a smidge less out-of-pocket cost since I had some store credit or a gift card or something. Honestly, one of the best impulse purchases I’ve ever made.

I’ve also kept my base PS5, and hooked it up on another TV in a side room. I almost never use it. I probably should sell it while the prices are high, but I feel emotionally connected to it. My PS4 which barely works is also still hooked up to the TV. Part of it is laziness on my part of not just get rid of these consoles I don’t use. My PS3 is still hooked up too. 😅 It’s a miracle if my DualShock 3 and 4’s still can hold a charge since they’ve sat around for years with a drained battery.

Also… I’ll be applying to join the “Geralt Fan Club” soon as well. Just gotta finish connecting post-apocalyptic Australia into the chiral network.

And about Gerald (as I got to calling him), I’m probably more interested to follow your journey through Witcher 3 than just about any game rn tbh. First off, it does help that it’s so fresh in the mind for me personally… but also your initial time with it way back when did sound very similar to my initial session or two with the game around 2 weeks back. I’m very curious to see how that initial onboarding goes for you this time, together with if your eventually able to het that ‘click’ moment where it all fell into place during my experience. I hope that does happen for you mate, as if it does I’d imagine that you’ll have a great time with it.

Good luck with the chiral network! I mostly enjoyed my time with the game and there is no doubt some utterly bananas sequences to take in, even by Kojima’s standards. I also hope Cocoon can prove itself as it was one of my favourites from that year. I still think about it often.

@psmr Yeah, I feel confident that the game will be much more interesting to me this time. I’m finishing the 4th book and I think the knowledge of the background narrative should work wonders to keep me engaged. Interestingly, I had the same issue with Cyberpunk where I could only stay with it for the first few hours before I fell off. Perhaps it’s CDPR’s style that I have to get accustomed to.

A bit off subject, but something of interest to you — my journey so far with Death Stranding 2 has been slightly this way. I’ve never wanted to drop it, but something really clicked and sent it into overdrive about 20 hours along and it’s back into that obsessive state in my brain where I think about the game all the time when I’m not playing it and feel a measure of addiction to the game world and it’s loop.

@Metonymy Thanks, I have started to enjoy Cocoon a little more the last session I spent. If I don’t feel like finishing it right away, I’ll keep it on deck for the right moment.

@Th3solution yeah I have noticed your username showing as a recent commenter on the Desth Stranding 2 thread a few times tbh… I’m kinda refraining from checking it out though, as I already know it’s gonna be a gaming highlight for me (from the little I heard about it around release, it’s like the original Death Stranding but plays a bit more like Metal Gear Solid V… I have a sneaking suspicion it could crack my top three games ever tbh) but I know all I want to know (probably more than I’d like to know), so I haven’t really checked out your experience with it. Super glad that you’re having that kinda time with it though, there’s nothing like having a game that consumes you like that… especially when it’s full to the brim with content.

Funny that we’re talking about games that we as gamers can feel very sceptical about for like 20 hours or so before things start falling into place and it ending up completely winning you over… and that MGSV should pop into my head. I had exactly the same experience with that too! It was my first Metal Gear game, my first Kojima game… and I just couldn’t quite grasp what it was doing. The vibe, the gameplay-loop, the size of it all… and then about 20 hours in, I started to feel at home. Same with Read Dead 2 as well… it’s almost that these huge games that have so many systems all operating simultaneously and in harmony with each other, cause the user to feel a little intimidated (whether they’re actually aware of it or not at the time) in order to sort the wheat from the chaff for 20 hours or so… and then once they’re comfortable that you’re wheat, they allow you to bask in their glow.

Two main reasons Why i'd 100% shoot for the PS5 Pro, if PCVR didn't exist.
Simply to play Subside + Makoa Shelf(PSVR2) with dynamic shadows(So then I'll know when a giant creepy tiger Shark is swimming above me. ) and higher resolution/SuperSampling, and being able to play RE9: Requiem at either 80-120fps mode, or with RayTracing & Spectral Upscaling.

But, PCVR does exist. including the Requiem PCVR mod, and Makoa Shelf will perform better with better headsets and a more powerful PC(Think 5080). That's the freedom of PC i guess.
But it's a huge investment. A PS6, if rumours are true about it being around $1000(US) is only a 1/3 the price compared to a pre-built PC with a 5080 + 9800X3D. But the 5080 is more powerful than PS6, it's available NOW, it gives you total freedom and it's not restricted to being just a video game console.
