So I picked this up after the neat pushsquare review and the fact I missed it last gen. Ive been waiting now for 40 minutes for the 12gb patch to download. Why is this even a thing? Its a remaster.

@Wesker But thats crazy, Rockstar would have been working on this for sometime there us no way a 12gb patch is neccessary on a remaster.

@themcnoisy That’s a great point. The whole purpose of a remaster is to update it to be optimized and work on the current gen hardware. Isn’t working out the bugs the whole point of a remaster? Sheesh, that’s frustrating.

12gb doesn't necessarily mean it's 12 of NEW content, but depending on how patches are configured entire sections of the game might be replaced. So after it's downloaded 12gb, updated the version and deleted redundant parts of the software you may only have an overall file that's 0.5gb bigger than before. It could even end up being smaller, I suppose, if the 12gb patch is designed to better optimise a 20gb section of the game.
It just depends how it's packaged and issuing a large patch might be more cost effective than trying to alter small sections.
@Th3solution Skyrim is still bugged after a million re-releases, even some of the most common bugs that people complained about five years ago are still present in the latest release.
@themcnoisy It's probably stuff that they found in the finally round of quality assurance testing. The patch more then likely is to correct those bugs and whatnot. At this point I would be more shocked if a game didn't have a day one patch.

@Wesker@Tasuki@Octane@kyleforrester87@Th3solution Thanks for the replies everyone. Its very frustrating for sure, and I feel completely unnecessary and it needs stamping out. I understand if its a new game but its not and 12gb can take a long time to download.
I believe remasters, especially on one player games, should be complete and done on disc.

@themcnoisy Developers have a fine line nowadays when it comes to pleasing fans and getting their games out on time. As I said its more then likely last minute bug fixes. I see it several ways.
1)The dev can release a broken game on launch day and patch it in later angering fans, and cause bad reviews and possible lost of sales.
2)Delay the game to add the patches onto the game disc and again angering fans and possibly loss sales.
3) Add a day one patch that takes what like 30 minutes to download and install for most people, and make their targeted release day with a game that's not broken, bugged etc.
Alot of people say oh retro games are better they didn't have patches, but you got to wonder if that's the rose tinted goggles talkin. How many NES games were broken messes and we're stuck that way cause developers had no way to patch games then.

@Tasuki I get all that Taz, but no one was kicking Rockstars door down because of a missed early release date. As I alluded to its not a new game and 12gb is a stupid amount really for a last gen game. It also looks terrible for a current gen game. Coming from hzd to this is jarring, theres no way they could not have done this when the discs were pressed.
The reality is a game going 'gold' nowadays means nothing and the rules need tightening up. Fair enough on a new release, but remasters or goty versions need the full hit from the disc imo.

@themcnoisy Remasters to be honest are handle like a new game development wise especially if it's a port from last gen's hardware.
And it's not necessary due to people "kicking" down doors of this particular release but they have other times. Remember the No Man's Sky devs getting death threats cause they delayed their game, not only that but as I said lost of profits.

@kyleforrester87 Oi, I hope not. Depending on the fate of net neutrality I’ll probably never be able to afford the data use charges and bandwidth to be able to stream my games, much less download huge patches on my physical games, or the entire game for digital games. Basically, if physical discs don’t contain the whole working and functional game, then we’re screwed no matter what, I guess, unless you’re made of money to be able to pay for all the internet data usage.
(How do you like that for histrionics? )
@Tasuki Ive been playing nms for the first time tonight. To say it doesnt live up to the hype is an understatement. The actual planet algorithms are great and the flying is fine. The game mechanics though are rubbish. Its mind numbing and I had a crash wiping out 15 minutes progress. I dont think nms could ever do the hype justice, elite is a better game and thats still underwhelming. Crazy really with the huge scope somethings been lost with both of these games. The mechanics and gameplay hooks should come first, rather than pointless ever hindering inventory management.

Just to add, two of the biggest patches (aside from L.A. Noire) that I've seen were for the Return to Arkham re-releases of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City... again, two last-generation remasters.

Hello, I missed this game last gen, is it worth its price? Does it hold well after all these year? Any recommendations? I can't decide if I should buy it.
Thanks
I can talk for hours about TLOU and Bloodborne

@Jorjk its great. Ive finished 5 or 6 cases and its great fun.
Negatives are the shooting, boring driving and occassional odd symmetry with conversation choices, that latter one is rare but really grates after a 45 minute case.
Positives are the awesome interwoven stories and quality writing! The facial animations are also brilliant!
Give it a go.
