@nessisonett Yeah I was done well before then after I had finished the story. I was finding myself getting bored of the game so I stopped playing it before my experience of it was tarnished forever.

I needed a big break from the series after that, so much so that I'm still not in the mood to play Odyssey or Valhalla. Still really enjoyed Origins though, just felt there needed to be less of everything.

@JohnnyShoulder @colonelkilgore Yeah, I stopped the game when the story was complete, despite large areas of the map being unvisited and lots of side quests being incomplete. It’s a shame because the world is so beautiful and interesting. But I felt my enjoyment had crested and things would end sour if I pushed it. I actually was still on a relative high at the end and wanted to start Odyssey straight away but I knew it would ruin the series for me if I didn’t take a break. Then Ghost of Tsushima came along and that satisfied my AC appetite for a while.

I guess Odyssey is a little different in the gameplay department at least. Supposedly there’s dialogue choices, in addition to the different protagonists, and more emphasis on naval travel and battle. Maybe it will still feel fresh.

Yeah the combat is slightly tweaked in Origins and felt better to me as a result (maybe just a little tighter). The naval stuff is awesome... and just island hopping in general. Lots of the Greek islands have a distinct character and sub-culture.

@colonelkilgore So... I loved the naval combat in AC3. I think it felt different and an added bonus to detract from the core gameplay loop. Then when I played Black Flag, it felt like a chore and a bit annoying. It was part of what put me off about BF. I wonder if I’ll like how it’s implemented in Odyssey

@Th3solution
I haven’t played 3 or BF (yet... they’re there waiting for me on the shelf) so it’s difficult for me to comment on this. I would imagine that it would be more similar to BF as it is more integral to the game than what I imagine it was in 3. I could be way off though.

@Th3solution I actually feel the exact same, 3’s naval combat was fantastic but in Black Flag, I spent so much time just wandering around in my ship wishing I was already at my destination. The naval combat also felt like it lacked feedback. In 3 the cannons felt weighty and you had to position yourself in order to train your cannons on the enemy. In Black Flag you just point and shoot.

@nessisonett You’ll have to let me know how you get along with Odyssey then, since we have similar feelings about Black Flag. Everyone raves about it being the best of the series, but I couldn’t get along with it. To me the naval part felt akin to the Batmobile in Arkham Knight — took a nice diversionary play mechanic and made it repetitive and cumbersome by revolving around it too much.
Also I didn’t care for the BF protagonist, what’s his name... Kennard or Kinney or something...

Picked up the Outer Worlds from the holiday sale, and have been really enjoying it. I know it's Obsidian's Fallout without the Fallout license, but I also sometimes get a Dishonored vibe from the more condensed level structure. I think it's a great case of less can equal more. Even though there are smaller levels, there are quite a few corners to turn, and lots of doors to unlock and a good sense of exploration overall. I really enjoy smaller environment games that make good use of the environment. Dishonored, Deus Ex etc.

not bad at all but the game looks kinda blurry. anyone else had this problem?

@jdv95 Interesting. Do you think screenshots would show it? I’d be shocked if had any real issues being part of the Instant Game Collection.

Sephiroth in Smash really got me into replaying FFVII (the original. I probably won't play Remake again all the way through until I get my PS5). I'm currently at the Great Glacier segment with the snowboarding minigame

@TheFrenchiestFry I think that might be my favourite section in the whole game. I know a lot of people hate it as it just throws you in after the end of disc 1 but I dunno, the atmosphere and music are great and the bosses are challenging.

@nessisonett I like the music but honestly the snowboarding minigame gets so jank it's unreal

Some of the collision detection with stuff like the mogs on the hill gets really frustrating to put up with and the snowboard feels both extremely heavy when moving from left to right, and extremely lightweight when drifting it's so weird

@TheFrenchiestFry Oh yeah, the snowboarding is total ass but I like the general area. It’s like the Gold Saucer, the area is great and I love the music but the actual minigames and stuff are dreadful.

I've been playing The Talos Principle with my wife, all about the puzzles with an interesting narrative running in the background. It's a fun game to work together, trying to solve the tougher puzzle rooms.

Solo, I've been jumping between Guacamelee 2 and classic Doom. Trying to finish Doom on Nightmare difficulty is a fun challenge so far.

@LieutenantFatman

This post has come around at a good time for me actually as the missus and I are just about to finish Bugsnax and are starting to consider what our next ‘together’ game could be. I picked The Talos Principle up from the store last week too, so I’m gonna suggest this.

@colonelkilgore
I agree with @Arugula that Until Dawn is definitey a good shout if you don't mind a bit of light horror. Firewatch was also a good one to play, and suprisingly, What Remains of Edith Finch was a decent shared adventure as well.

I find a big consideration for what works well as a 'together game' as you put it is pacing. So many games that would be perfect in theory, but fail as there's so much added busy work or mowing down thousands of enemies between story scenes that it prevents certain games from escaping from a solo only experience.

I found that the Resi 2 and 3 remakes worked quite well as they're so atmospheric. FF7 remake would have been pretty good but they throw in so many extra boss fights it drags on a little too long at times.

Cheers for the suggestions, never even heard of the Powgie games but just googled them and yeah I reckon she may like them. I like the idea of the Supermassive games too, might save one of them for Halloween actually.

Thanks @LieutenantFatman , good suggestions all. The little I know of Firewatch makes me think it could be a good one for us. Think puzzle solving is far more of the missus-pace than defeating enemies but I’ll put a list together with some context for each and let her decide.
