An extended game-play trailer that shows a bit more of the E3 showing...

This still begins and ends at the same point but there is a few differences. It shows the HUD (which is quite minimal) but also shows Ammo count when holding a weapon, a brief look at the crafting (similar to Last of Us) and well worth watching...

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Looks pretty awesome, definitely getting some Last of US vibes from this game, and that's a good thing. Holiday 2017? Hopefully!

I don't know I mean I think the whole Zombie thing is played out already. Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us (ok so in Last of Us they weren't technically Zombies but close enough) Dead Rising and so on and so on. If there wasn't a hundred of these games like this already then it would be awesome but in the end it's just another you're a lone human fighting a zombie apocalypse.

@Tasuki: you could argue it's been around even longer including Res. Evil series, but the horror genre will never die. 😂

@Tasuki: Zombies though make perfect gaming cannon fodder. If you look at other horror monsters, Vampires are only deadly at night but are super fast/strong etc, Werewolves are only deadly during a full moon. Humans tend to be able to think, pick up and use weaponry, cover etc. Zombies though are relentless, don't feel pain so not going to stop if you blow a limb off, don't think or strategise, just single minded and swarm/chase you, don't use weapons so not going to sit behind cover and try and pick you off from a distance, not affected by day/night cycles etc etc. The only thing that could do the 'Zombie' role in my opinion is some 'Alien' species but that takes it into sci-fi realms and unless you are on their 'planet' would require a 'brain' to build transportation to get these 'brainless, unrelenting, cannon fodder' to Earth.

Zombies also fit another narrative/purpose. They can explain why there is very few 'humans' around as they have 'become' the Zombies.

@Elodin: Zombies in games have been around since the 80's - Ghost and Goblins had zombies and there was an Evil Dead game on the Spectrum/C64 too.

I've reading some impressions from the demo and what the dev had to say about the game. Whilst my initial impression was that it was some kind of The Last of Us 2, I now believe that this game is the complete opposite. There's still zombies and stuff, but the open-world nature of this game should be enough to differentiate it from The Last of Us. With a day-night cycle; freakers coming out mainly at night; setting up traps; luring the freakers towards other gangs as a means of attack; the fact that you should always be paying attention, because apparently these freakers can jump at you at any time; All of this completely changes the pacing of this game. It's the good stuff from The Last of Us, but in a completely different setting in terms of gameplay.

I need to see more gameplay before I'm sold on the game. While the zombie horde movements and the ability to use the environments against them is great. I hope that the entire game isn't just running away from them while slowly reducing their numbers. I would like to see some different kinds of zombies as well.

@WanderingBullet: Apparenly there's at least two kinds; the ones that come in hoards and another kind that found mostly on its own. It was seen in the beginning during the gameplay demo, but I couldn't spot any visual differences.

They are not actually Zombies as they are alive and pose more of a threat at night. Their 'health' was turned right down for the demo too as they didn't want the lead character to die - the extended video (above) shows the scene play out a 'different' way to show more of the environmental aspect. There was more about the resources, crafting and setting traps, explosives etc too. I don't really want mutated 10ft+ creatures or creatures that have 'inhuman' abilities - for example ones that can teleport, fly, jump 30meters etc - certainly not if they 'were; human. Evolving is a different matter and can change the way they behave. We saw 2 types of 'Freakers' in the E3 game-play 'Newts' - which I assume was what flashed passed the door when Deacon opened the chest and what was attacking 2-dog and appeared to be alone and 'Hordes' which I assume were the ones that move in packs and swarmed you... Obviously!

An open-world, action/adventure/horror - what's not to like. It obviously has some RPG elements too but as this is very unlikely to release this year - even before next years E3, their is plenty of time to find out more - don't want to find out too much just yet and either keep getting the same information over and over again or end up having to reveal too much to bring something 'new'.

WanderingBullet

@Octane: Are you referring to one at around 2:06? Now that I looked at it again, that one seems more like a child zombie and that he moves on all fours.

@WanderingBullet: Can't watch the video right now, but it was the one that attacked your buddy or whatever he was. The first "zombie" they encountered in the demo. It wasn't clear from the video, but the devs said there was a difference between the two.

Octane

WanderingBullet

@Octane: Yup, thats the one. It did look slightly different from the rest, it was really skinny plus it was moving on all fours unlike the rest.

I couldn't draw a conclusion from the video. Would the objective be to escape the horde, or whittle the horde down whilst back-peddling until all are dead? Couldn't help thinking that running away was the best option and never turning back.

@Shellcore: It's open world game, so the goal is to do what keeps you alive.

My interest level in this game went up about 4000% after the E3 2017 showing.

At worst I think this game will just be solid. At best, it could be something pretty special.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

An interesting look at the history of the development of Days Gone and Sony Bend studios. I don't think it has any 'spoilers' - unless you really don't want to see ANY game-play footage - although there isn't a lot and some is old E3 footage. Its more a look at how the game came about and the early discussions about what their 'next' game would be - interspersed by some history of the studio too...
