Topic: Beginner Looking for PS3 Recommendations

Hello! I'm new to the PlayStation consoles in general, and I recently was gifted a used PS3 (specifically the PS3 Slim from what I was able to find). I tested it and it works so far, but I've only been able to test it booting to the menu and running DVDs since I don't have any games yet. What are some of your personal favorite games?
Not a strict rule, but I'd prefer games that aren't available on Nintendo consoles or PC since I already have those platforms, and I'd like to discover games that I haven't had the chance to play before.

Here are a few games I'm thinking of getting after perusing eBay:
LittleBigPlanet
Journey
The Orange Box (Mainly because I've been meaning to get around to the Half-life series, but I'm also a long-time Portal fan who feels like it would be a cool piece of history, too)

It's nice to be here and meet all of you!

@gryphon-song A couple years ago we did a big poll on the forums here and voted for the best PS3 games and created a master list with the results of the poll. I saved the list just out of my own interest. Here’s the top 31, which would be a good place for you to start. (The name of the developer is right after the title of the game):

31 Dragon Age: Origins BioWare
30 Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Insomniac Games
29 Valkyria Chronicles Sega WOW
28 inFAMOUS Sucker Punch Productions
-27 Sleeping Dogs United Front Games
26 Burnout Paradise Criterion Games
-25 Borderlands 2 Gearbox Software
-24 Mass Effect Trilogy BioWare / Electronic Arts
23 The Orange Box EA UK / Valve Corporation
-22 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Infinity Ward
21 Killzone 2 Guerrilla Games
20 Fallout: New Vegas Obsidian Entertainment
-19 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Bethesda Game Studios
-18 God of War III SCE Santa Monica Studio
-17 Dark Souls From Software
16 Dead Space EA Redwood Shores
-15 Batman: Arkham City Rocksteady Studios
-14 Heavy Rain Quantic Dream
-13 Assassin's Creed II Ubisoft Montreal
-12 Rayman Origins Ubisoft Montpellier
-11 Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Naughty Dog
10 Fallout 3 Bethesda Game Studios
-9 Batman: Arkham Asylum Rocksteady Studios
8 Red Dead Redemption Rockstar San Diego
7 LittleBigPlanet Media Molecule
-6 Mass Effect 2 BioWare / Electronic Arts
-5 BioShock Irrational Games / 2K Marin
-4 BioShock Infinite Irrational Games
3 Portal 2 Valve Corporation
2 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Kojima Productions
-1 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Naughty Dog

Several of these are likely available on PC. I put a little hyphen mark next to the games that have been remastered and are also available now on PS4. So if you ever plan to get a PS4, maybe you’d want to play the updated version. But all these were excellent in their own right when they came out on PS3.

@Th3solution Valkyria Chronicles and Burnout Paradise have also been ported to PS4!

You should register to psn and try the eshop. There are many games there. Since I guess you don't have a PS1 or PS2 you could see the classics section.

The only real PS3 exclusive is Metal Gear Solid 4. Since you may have played the first or second on PC this is a sequel to them.

@nessisonett Oh yeah, that’s right! 😄
Looking back, there is hardly any of the big games left from that generation that haven’t been ported to PS4.

@Th3solution Red Dead Redemption would be the biggest that comes to mind. I don't understand why it never was, but if it's not GTA, I guess they don't care.

I third the recommendation from @belmont and @nomither6. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a must. That along with the Uncharted series are the biggest reasons why I'm PlayStation fan today. Ratchet & Clank to an extent as well, so if you like those kind of games, I would definitely check out that series too.

The PS3 is a very cool console that you have the option to play games in 3D.

Batman: Arkham City Rocksteady Studios

Heavy Rain Quantic Dream

Batman: Arkham Asylum Rocksteady Studios

I’ve played all three on the PS3 and really enjoyed them.

The PSVR is the best VR system on the market today.

Bentleyma

If you like JRPG’s then I highly recommend Persona 5. It is one of the best games I’ve played.

It’s a bit on the pricey side compared to a lot of PS3 games, but you’ll get over 100 hours of playtime out of it.

@Th3solution that's a hell of a list, the only games I might throw on there is mgsV, I've only played it on ps4 but I understand it plays pretty nice on ps3. I think yakuza 0 might also be in the same boat. Two of my fave games of the ps4 era with ps3 ports.

@R1spam I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the PS3 version of Yakuza 0 was only released in Japan.

@Bentleyma ooft my bad, does it not even have English subtitles? Why would you add that for ps4 but not ps3 given the text file isnt that big? Or is it just not for sale in other global territories?

I thoroughly recommend Puppeteer, a PS3 exclusive. A great 2D platformer that really nailed the 'on-stage' aesthetic with inventive level design and charming voice acting. Would love to see this remastered for VR in particular.

Here are my favorites. I'll include PS1 games since your Slim should be able to play the discs (not PS2 discs though), as well as any digital only games

Racing
Motorstorm, MS Pacific Rift, and MS Apocalypse - PS3 (MS1 is the reason I got a PS3)
Need for Speed High Stakes - PS1 Disc (also on PC, but not available digitally, and disc won't run on Windows 10)
Blur - PS3 (also on PC, but no longer for sale)
Need for Speed Carbon, NFS ProStreet, and NFS Undercover - PS3 (Also on Wii, but Carbon has some more features and Undercover is a brand new game on PS3/X360)
Midnight Club 2 & 3 - Digital only (May have been delisted, but Wikipedia says only for Europe)
Twisted Metal 1-4 & TM Small Brawl - PS1 disc and possibly digital (Not racing, but car combat. Didn't know where else to put this)
Twisted Metal - PS3 (see TM 1-4)

Action
God of War series - PS3
Metal Gear Solid - PS1 Disc and Digital
Uncharted 1-3 - PS3

Platformer
Ratchet and Clank collection (the one with the first 3 games) - PS3
Castlevania Symphony of the Night - PS1 disc and digital(?)

RPG
Wild Arms - PS1 Disc and Digital(?)
Demon Souls - PS3 (haven't been able to get into this one myself, but it is very much liked)
