Topic: PS5 power outage: hardware damage?

Hello everyone,

Last Friday I unboxed and installed my brandnew Playstation 5 disc edition. I started playing Astro's Playroom for a little while (that game that is standard included on the PS5), and while I was doing that, the electricity in the house went out. A friend of mine was busy putting a little too many electrical products into one power strip. The last thing he put in was a lamp. The lightbulb "exploded" and the electricity went out.

Due to this incident, my PS5 was turned off the incorrect way. From what I understand, turning off your PS5 by taking away the electricity isn't necessarily a problem, it might cause some data loss or software issues but nothing more than that. But with the power outage/power failure, a little google research tells me that this is a lot worse. I am not a technician at all, but I read that the "power spikes" and "surges" that come with a power outage can really cause hardware damage.

What kind of hardware damage do I have to think of? My Playstation 5 is working again, and everything seems fine, but since I only played for 5 to 10 minutes before I had this power outage, I don't really know how a PS5 usually functions (with the frame rate, loading times, things like that).

Maybe the most important question: if the power outage caused hardware damage to my PS5, what kind of hardware damage would that be?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Kind regards,

If it works and seems fine, it most likely is. Hardware damage caused by a huge surge would probably result in it not working at all.

That said, you might want to invest in a surge protector and/or UPS if it’s something you think might happen again.
