I need help. I bought a PS4 off Ebay, it was used. But it also didn't include a controller, just the HDMI and Power Cables. So i bought a controller as well.

The PS4 Came and booted up just fine, and it got to a screen that read something like "Connect the Controller with a USB cable and Press the PS Button to continue" With a blue background and the same message in about 20 different languages. When my controller came, i plugged it up and a white light came on. No matter how many times i hit the PS button, it just flashed white and nothing happened. I tested the cable in some other devices, like my phone and hard drive. It charged my phone and my hard drive, however, wouldn't show up on my PC. But it had the light on.

So, i bought a new usb cable (Which was new and official PS4). Plugged it to the old controller i bought. It was a solid white, and when i hit the PS button, the light turned blue. At that language screen, i hit the PS button but nothing happened. But the share button kinda worked, it brought up a little popup about the store not being available. (Which is more then the old cord did, it was completely unresponsive)

I thought the button itself was broken. But no, i press the home button and it brought my TV back to the HDMI channel the PS4 was connected to on my TV. I tried rebooting into safe mode, the PS button worked on that menu. I tried the options, like Factory Reset, all of them. But nothing actually worked. When It got to the Language screen, nothing happened. With each option.

I want to send it back, but i don't know what's broken. The controller or the console itself? Please help me.

Most likely there is an issue with the controller as the PS4 boots up fine.

How much did you get the console for? If it’s less than £179/$200 dollars there might be cause for concern.
Hope you resolve your issue, but never buy hardware pre-owned.

@Fight_Teza_Fight You should be ok buying 2nd hand stuff from stores like CEX (obviously not in the current climate) as they test all the hardware and come with a guarantee. I would agree to avoid buying used hardware from Ebay unless it is from a reliable seller, as you get some stores on there which offer the same guarantees.

@Fight_Teza_Fight The console was about 314 dollars. It's just odd that the controller can work on Safe Mode and can "connect" with the new cable but just won't get past that other screen.

@Arugula The pinhole thing on the back? Or is there another way? Yeah, i tried that. Didn't work.

@JohnnyShoulder Honestly, i thought they were reliable, they had 99 positive reviews and 0 negative and 0 neutral. The controller seller.

@TheBlockerNator They very well might be and could happen if buying from a store or a more reputable web site, but at least you would have a guarantee to fall back on.

I'm not sure where you stand on this, it might be worth contacting the seller and see if the will offer a refund or something. Think it depends on what they declared on the product description.
