Platinum Trophy #22 (and #23 I guess): Bugsnax
Date Earned: 4th November 2020 (and also 25th November 2020)
Dopamine Index:
I think it's here, with Bugsnax of all things, where I'm really beginning to let my inner Trophy hunter come to the fore.
This is an interesting and odd one for a few reasons. Firstly, I reviewed Bugsnax for the site on both PS4 and, later, PS5, this being a launch title for the brand-spanking-new console.
Secondly, this will be the first PS5 platinum I talk about, though it isn't the first PS5 platinum I earned. I'm doing this slightly out of order because I didn't want to put you through two separate Going Platinums about the same dang game.
Thirdly, yes, I earned the plat for Bugsnax twice, and not because the PS5 Trophies popped automatically — I platinumed this thing manually both times.
The worst part is I don't really have an explanation for my actions.
Why would I bother? I'm asking myself this as I write this, and all I'm getting back is the abstract thought equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders. I've got nothing.
My best guess is that, hey, Bugsnax is a fun game, and I like fun games. It's probably as simple as that.
I mean look at this:
Bugsnax is silly, unusual, clever, funny, and utterly unique — all big green ticks in my book. Oh, and it's from the makers of Octodad: Dadliest Catch? I was always going to love this, from the moment I watched this announcement trailer.
I don't think the game's some flawless masterpiece, but it really captured my attention with its bonkers premise, very unserious tone, and Pokémon-like creatures you have to capture. It was, and still is, so different to most other stuff out there.
Travelling across the island and discovering new Bugsnax species really gave me a similar sense of discovery and wonder I feel playing Game Freak's monster-battling RPG series.
Obviously the context is very different, but the creature designs, the way they behave, and the methods you employ to catch them are all so imaginative. It's really goofy and really fun.
I guess I haven't really explained why it's so fun I felt compelled to complete the Trophy list twice over in the span of a few weeks.
Again, I don't really have the answer, but given how busy we all were around the time of PS5's launch, not to mention how rarely I replay games, I must've been so smitten with Bugsnax that I simply wasn't ready to leave Snaktooth Island.
I did review the PS4 and PS5 versions, but frankly, there was no massive need for me to finish it a second time on the next-gen system. The only things that changed were performance differences, faster loading, and DualSense stuff — all things I could get a measure of pretty quickly.
I guess I was just in it for the love of the game, literally — but also, Trophies!
If I have gone through the whole story again, I might as well nab the plat, right? I'd get most of the Trophies along the way regardless, so why not?
Cheers, Bugsnax.

Not really my type of game so I never even looked at the list, but I’ve double platinum’d a number of games over the course of trophy hunting on my account. If the trophy lists are well designed and the game is good, I don’t mind.
I’ve also autopopped a few games here and there. I know there’s some foul sentiment about that from a certain subset of trophy hunters on the forums, but the way I reason is: I’ve already done it once. It’s clear I can do it. If the list is trash or the game wasn’t as fun as I expected, why would I put myself through that hassle a second time?
God, miss this game, need another.
Can anybody write these? Like ok u got plat or double for PS4 and PS5 but do we need to hear about it. 😂
@Balaam_ obviously the whole trophy thing is nonsense anyway, and I say this as a 404 platinum holder, however the sentiment from those people comes from the fact, you only did it once and therefore should get 1 and not 2 as you didn't 'earn' it the 2nd time.
Many, many, many people bulk up their platinum numbers with multiple autopops, some going as far as to do it across different countries stores getting up to 6 plats for the same game and some would argue this kind of behaviour 'devalues' the trophy system, which is ludicrous as it has no value anyway, but still, that's their point.
I don't autopop myself and, like you, have double platted many games out of sheer enjoyment of the game, in fact, it's a huge selling point for a game for me if it has a ps4/ps5 version and I'll plat 5 first then playthrough 4 later in the year etc. Whilst I don't agree with the sentiment necessarily, I can understand why people get funny about it.
@Kiryu-Chan Some trophy hunters go even further than that buying trashy low-end platinum games that allow you to unlock the trophies in seconds, some allow multiple lists too. As such Trophies been completely devalued imo. I could literally spend £50 and get 10+ platinum's by the end of the evening. A shame.
@themightyant yes but we know who those people are by looking at the trophy profiles and we rightly mock them. I’m a hardcore trophy hunter attempting to keep a 100% profile, just hit 70 last week on Space marine 2. I do have the odd cheese platinum but certainly no jumping tacos on my list. I also wish it hadn’t got to this point as it is a bit silly.
@Balaam_
More self-serving junk logic from the king of low effort trophies.
My brother did the New York marathon in 2006. He got a medal for doing it in... 2006. Using your logic he should have got one in 2007 as well because "he already did it once".
@MrPeanutbutterz hahaha great point
Good fun game though just the one platinum for me but I must get round to the dlc at some point.
Actually I have really enjoyed bugsnax..idk why but maybe cuz it was one for the first this gen games I have played so it left this nice feeling 😅 should replay it again with the dlc they have released.
I also enjoyed getting the platinum for this. I also cannot explain why you got it again. It was kind of a pain, so once was enough for me.
@Balaam_ I got the platinum for the PS5 version of Sea of Stars and enjoyed it so much I went for it again on PS4. I got every trophy but one: the boomerang (moonerang?) trophy for bouncing the damn thing 30 times. I tried for hours, and don’t even understand how I got it the first time.
Do you think I deserve the second platinum?
I liked Bugsnax a lot
Got the plat too but only on PS5
