Platinum Trophy #11: Spyro the Dragon (Reignited Trilogy)
Date Earned: 18th November 2018
Dopamine Index:
As a child, I was very lucky to grow up with access to an original PlayStation, but the library of games we accrued was entirely down to the discernment of my parents.
That meant our collection was a proper mixed bag; we had some gems, of course, as the PS1's catalogue is rife with them. We also had some real stinkers.
Fortunately, somewhere along the line, we ended up with a copy of Spyro the Dragon, which quickly became a firm favourite.
However, such is the unpredictable nature of parents best-guessing what games to buy, I never really got to play Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer or Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
What I'm trying to do is explain why, when I played Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, I only bothered to put any significant time into the first title in the collection. Once I'd had my fill of Spyro 1, I played a bit of the others, but the nostalgia just wasn't there.
But man, I had a really good time replaying the first one.
It still feels fairly unique among 3D platformers in some ways; the way you move and the abilities at your disposal aren't really seen anywhere else.
The structure is a little unusual, too, with its disparate levels splintering off from large hub worlds and low-pressure, open-ended exploration.
As a kid I really loved running around fairly aimlessly in each stage, and as a consequence, I got to know them very well, especially the earlier ones. The remake is spot on, as far as I recall, and it was a real treat seeing a childhood game in new detail.
I remember making the decision to go for the platinum in Spyro 1 because I thought it would be fun to have it for a game I've loved since I was like, I dunno, eight?
It's one of those "just do everything" platinums, I think, which is always a fun target to aim for in a 3D platformer.
You don't really play Spyro for a challenge, and frankly this is another quite easy platinum in my humble collection, but it's a real heart pick for me.
Maybe I'll get around to the sequels some day, as it would be fun to have the platinums in all three. But the first game is such a comfortable, familiar place that I didn't want to leave. I just want to free dragons and chase egg thieves and feed butterflies to Sparx, okay?
Cheers, Spyro the Dragon.

I bought this one to platinum on the nostalgia of others as I never played it as a kid. It didn't work for me, one of the few games I've ever given up on.
Now I'm sitting here looking at that 19% completion and wondering if I should just try it once more?
@Anke Might as well finish it funny enough I had a much easier time getting 100% on these games now then when I was a kid 😂
Great game, solid remaster (even if the lack of 60fps on current gen stinks). More relevantly, this one has a fantastic and enjoyable trophy list. Much better than the Crash remaster (although the games themselves are solid remakes too). Devs should consider what the trophy hunting audience wants rather than try to shove arbitrary time trials down everyone’s throats.
The nostalgia of seeing this one really puts a smile on my face 😁 I loved Spyro as a kid and to this day I'll still play the 2nd game throughout the year when I need to relax. Though this makes me wish that Sony could somehow get the original games into the Classics catalogue. (The reignited trilogy is not spoken of in this house lol)
