Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Puts A Number Of Hollywood Movies To Shame – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves' Believable Characters Are A Paradigm Shift In Video Games.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves' Believable Characters Are A Paradigm Shift In Video Games.

I don’t want to get into details about plot. I don’t want to spoil things for those of you who haven’t played Uncharted yet – although you really should be asking yourselves ‘why not?’. I just want to say – right here, right now – for my weekly column, that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is without doubt the best written video game of all time.

I really hope that in years to come, people will remember Naughty Dog’s name as the first development house to truly bring story and character into games. Often a game will use story to add context to a number of levels; Uncharted 2 uses levels to tell story – and it really is a paradigm shift in the industry based on just how much the bar has been raised. The potential was always there in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, but Uncharted 2: Among Thieves brings that to the next level.

You might look at games such as Fahrenheit, Shenmue and Grand Theft Auto as other experiences that have paved Naughty Dog’s path to this point. But personally, I feel Uncharted 2 is at another level. It’s not just in the world and the characters, but just the simple writing. For me the acting, voice work and character development rival that of a Hollywood blockbuster; putting many to shame. Aside from the clear Indiana Jones inspiration, the performances of everyone involved are seriously breath-taking. And totally engaging.

The game’s pacing is also brilliant. Mixing up the sometimes relentless pace video games are known for, Uncharted 2 is polished enough to step back from time to time – like the best movies – and give the audience a breather.

I hope Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will go down in history; not for its refined gameplay, but it’s inspirational story-telling.

No doubt Uncharted 2 is amazing, and the story is one of the best of all time, but it's hardly the first game to achieve this. Deus Ex, KoTOR and the Metal Gear Series all had better stories imo.

"MGS4 (only one ive played)". Says it all, it won't make much sense if you've not played the others. Go back and play 1,2, and 3 see if you change your mind.

    no, they did not.
uncharted 2s story is so easy to follow.
you understand the story, who the characters are and what there play in the game is.
MGS4 (only one ive played) i had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on there.
who the characters are, or what they had to do with the story.
    whats there purpose.
not to mention the 40 minute videos.
i want to PLAY my games not watch them.
nothing gives you the experience that uncharted 2 does.

how many times do you hear that said about a game?
this is the first for me.

Brilliant game. Naughty dog should be very proud and I hope that the game sells as many copies at it deserves. It's like being part of the film you are watching; the transition from game play to cut scene is fantastic. And because the story is so well told and involving, putting the controller down from time to time isn't in the least bit annoying. If anything you want it to happen so you get to see a bit more of the film.

And the graphics... my god, I knew the PS3 had lots of power but even I was stunned!

I agree with you as well man, the game is a ridiculously awesome experience. However, I think one game that is surprisingly not mentioned here is MGS4. Uncharted 2 definitley a bar raiser doesnt quite surpass what MGS4 brought to the table. I mean just that microwave sequence, the rex vs ray, vamp boss fight, liquid/ocelot vs snake. Loads will complain bout the cut scenes, but MGS4 brought complex political, geopolitical, and economic ideas that aren't really expressed in movies let alone video games. Sony really does have the ultimate entertainment experience; this coming from a 2 year ps3 and 360 owner.

Absolutely, 100% agree with you. In fact, I agree with so much that you've written recently, I'm starting to wonder if you are actually me. Maybe I have undiagnosed schizophrenia, and I'm writing and submitting these articles in my sleep?

Anyway, Uncharted 2 is easily better than many Hollywood movies. I'm a big fan of the Indy films, and (dare I say it) even the Tomb Raider movies. But this blows them all out of the water.

I don't know if it's the interactivity which games provide, or simply the immaculate presentation of the game, but it's just so much... MORE... than films provide.

The opening chapter of Uncharted 2 is awesome - there really is no other word for it. And it just gets better and better as you play each chapter. The acting alone is better than you get in many movies these days, but added to that, the story is tight and well paced, the humour is subtle but never predictable, the action intense and occasionally exhausting.

Uncharted 2 isn't simply a game - it's an EVENT, and one which every gamer owes it to themselves to experience. 'Epic' is a word that's thrown around way too much these days, but it's the only one which describes the game, and it's NOT an exaggeration.
