In a tiny Gamescom booth, in the business area separated from the hustle and bustle of the Koelnmesse chaos, NEKCOM founder Xiangyu Luo and I may have become BFFs.
With a translator converting my questions into Mandarin, I’m not sure how much he understood – but his eyes lit up when I made a reference to Shenmue, my all-time favourite franchise.
“[Series creator] Yu Suzuki is a genius,” he says. “When I went to Tokyo I visited him. I really respect his work.”
I suspected the upcoming Chinese action RPG Showa American Story may be inspired by the groundbreaking Dreamcast series when I saw its latest trailer.

Minigames include a shooter clearly inspired by Space Harrier and an OutRun-style racing game – both originally designed and directed by Suzuki in the 80s, of course.

This is a bizarre PS5 console exclusive, and quite unlike the deluge of gothic Soulslikes coming out of China right now.
It’s inspired by a rumour that circulated in the 80s, during the Japanese economic boom. Chinese whispers warned that Japan had enough money to buy the United States, and so Showa American Story asks: what if?
In my demo, Hollywood is Neo Yokohama and Japanese immigrants have formed gangs based on the Walter Hill movie The Warriors.
You play as protagonist Chigusa Choko, a sexually empowered wannabe movie star who’s kidnapped by gangsters and subsequently killed.
When she rises from the grave to a zombie-infested world, she wants to learn the whereabouts of her sister – and seek revenge against her murderers.

With such a bizarre concept, I asked Luo whether it was difficult to get funding. Unsurprisingly, it was.
“A lot of investors actually didn’t understand the charisma of the game, especially with such a unique idea, it’s very difficult to find another title in the same category for comparison,” he admits. “For them, it's a very uncertain investment.”
I’m relieved the bean counters have taken a chance on this title, though, because it’s got a spirit and energy we seldom see anymore.
While my demo was extremely unfinished, I can see it pulls from a broad range of inspirations, including No More Heroes and Yakuza, as well as many movies and TV shows from the time.
I asked Luo for a few inspirations and he tossed an entire list at me, including everything from Dragon Ball Z and Fist of the North Star through to Kamen Rider and Masters of the Universe.

In fact, he had so many inspirations I think the translator was struggling to keep up.
I had two choices for my demo: combat or exploration.
I actually decided to start out with the exploration, as I wanted to experience the Shenmue vibes for myself.
The demo begins in a small Japanese-style settlement on the Hollywood hills, next to a traditional onsen constructed out of bath tubs.
I really want to underline here just how bizarre the vibes of this game are; while I struggled to keep up with the script while maintaining my conversation with Luo, it seems the baths themselves are seasoned like hot pot or sukiyaki. It’s all rather absurd.
There are references to various aspects of pop culture, like Knight Rider, and I asked whether the script was written in Chinese, Japanese, or English first.

Apparently it was originally written in Chinese and has been localised into English, although the dialogue is in Japanese. My respect to whoever’s working on all the translations.
In this town-like area it was possible to play the aforementioned minigames and shop at a nearby store. Choko will have “lots” of different outfits you can unlock and wear.
I asked about the character design, which leans heavily into the heroine’s sexuality, and Luo explained that it represents the changing attitudes to sex at the time. In practice, this means short-shorts and low-cut crop tops.
Luo is eager to stress that he considers this game an action RPG, with a big emphasis on character development and story.
Despite this, I thought it was important to get a taste of the combat as well.

Fighting against the aforementioned goons from The Warriors was deeper than I expected, even though there’s still a lot of work left to be done.
You can toggle between different weapons, like a katana, using the d-pad – and you even have access to a firearm at all times, like a shotgun and submachine gun.
It’s visceral and violent, but in a goofy, tongue-in-cheek way.
After you stun an enemy, you can do a QTE finisher where you stomp them in the face by mashing Square – and I pointed out that it would fit the vibe of the game if this animation kept playing for as long as you pushed the button.
I think Luo agreed that it would be funny, so keep your eyes peeled to see if that gets added to the final game.
The demo clearly showed promise in terms of style and tone, although I think the team has a lot of work to do to tighten up the overall feel.

The controls feel slow and laggy in this early build, and there were some systems I didn’t really get a good grasp on. (Although that’s not unusual for a show floor demo, where your time is limited and you want to see as much as possible.)
Luo’s attitude and influences warmed me to this project overall, though. I think, if nothing else, he has a vision that he’s determined to realise – and that means this game should end up like nothing else out there.
If you’re a fan of Yakuza, No More Heroes, or – particularly – Shenmue, then I think this game should be on your radar.
I’m pleased to see a Chinese dev forge its own path, rather than borrow from what’s popular in the market right now.

So you’re saying it’s a shenmue-like then? I see….
How very dare you tease me with this, Sammy? As someone who prides themselves on never shutting up about the Dreamcast or Shenmue, I will be purchasing this the moment I can. 😂
I see no other option than for you to go China again and do an in-depth interview and tour. Thank you in advance.
@Yousef- Definitely massive Shenmue influences here, but still also got its own very strange vibe. It's really unique.
@ButteredCrumpet You're very welcome. I suspect that tour would be much less glamorous, but I like the cut of Luo's jib. (He was wearing sunglasses indoors throughout the entire interview.)
Now THIS is the kinda brilliant, crazy stuff that keeps me in gaming!
@RainbowGazelle Yeah, I was quite taken with it too.
So Sammy were you asking your questions the way Ryo Hazuki would?
'Chinese whispers warned that Japan had enough money to buy the United States, and so Showa American Story asks: what if?'
Anyone who's ever played Chinese Whispers with friends will know that the original statement that ended up as 'Japan had enough money to buy the United States', probably started as 'Jasper had enough honey to supply an excited estate'
I salute both devs and the investors for taking risk towards unique / bizzare game like this, which my guess is it will not sell well.
But i personally will support it especially if it have physical release.
I have been looking forward to this game since it was first announced. It's nice to hear more about it, as I was concerned it had been cancelled.
This looks insane in a fun way. I love seeing something different.
I love everything about this
Definitely keeping an eye on this one. Looks good as well as different to almost everything else coming out at the moment.
The game looks really wacky and fun, just hoping the game can get some polish before it releases.
@BentIeyma Definitely not cancelled. It's playable just needs polish.
@Areus Of course. "Do you remember the day the snow turned to rain?"
@PuppetMaster Hopefully it can find an audience! I definitely think it will resonate with Yakuza fans.
I was hooked on it since the reveal, but then came a year of radio silence. I'm so glad it's alive.
@get2sammyb you’re right, watched the trailer and it had elements of Onechanbara too, can’t wait!
Never played Shenmu, but this game seems to have a Lollipop chainsaw vibe, which I love, do you think that's accurate? Shame to hear it sounds like it's still a rough demo, I guess there's not much chance of a 2027 release then?
@Icey664 Definitely can see the Lollipop Chainsaw comparisons in the combat for sure.
I dunno, 2027 may be possible. Just depends whether they're in the "polishing" phase or still building out all the systems, mechanics, levels, etc.
I really don't see how this game can give shenmue vibes, when shenmue is a very slow paced and serious adventure game with almost no memes (english translation was a meme but it's not the vibe of JP version)
Easily one of my most anticipated games. I live for these quirky, AA but striving toward AAA experiences. Wanted:Dead, Romeo is a Dead Man, etc.
@gordonps This game definitely has slower paced moments. I mentioned in the preview, there was a town I could just walk around and explore. Play the arcade games etc.
Obviously it's a different type of game, but there's clear inspiration there, as reflected by the director who literally told me he went to visit Yu Suzuki's studio.
@get2sammyb This game reminds me I’m still sad “Sunset Overdrive” has never released on a Sony console. Play it if you can, it’s Infamous, but fun and colorful.
In the late1980s in Marvel comics Namor the Sub-Mariner basically bought the world using his wealth as Prince of Atlantis. Then Marvel put him in a movie and beat him in an oversized toaster oven. 😩
As much as I love Shenmue, Shenmue needs fresh blood meaning a new fan base, which it will never get with a shenmue 4&5.
I'd reimagine a shenmue reboot in a cel shaded 80s anime look (like orbital) paired with a citypop soundtrack and aesthetic. I know fanboys would scoff at the idea, but that mentality will keep the series where it has been for ages, obscure limbo.
@tameshiyaku I dunno about your idea but I'm willing to explore any ways the franchise could be kept alive to be fair.
@get2sammyb thanks for this. Was anticipating this info after the 30th. Should have expected you to be the first. From your experience though, it sounds like it mightn't release this year, if you're saying it still needs work.
Woo, those shorts look uncomfortable.
@Torque Definitely not coming out this year.
@get2sammyb Feel like this game has been gestation forever, but I do want to let them cook!
Haha WUT. This sounds incredible. Immediately added to my watchlist!
@get2sammyb ah, shame. Hope it gets a chance to get a physical release.
Also getting some batshit Bayonetta vibes too. Very interesting looking game for sure
@get2sammyb
If Shenmue is your favorite franchise, we might become BFFs. 🤣
The game sounds interesting!
Looks interesting, but if it's channeling Shemue, then it's going to be terrible.
my first impression was, damn this is next gen Shenmue.
Hopefully it wont be too childish, otherwise looks interesting.
Immediately one of my most anticipated games. Look fantastic!
I'll buy this just so I can spend a few hours looking at that butt.
Was happy to see this game at the show! I'm really in it for the wackiness and cultural fusion, but I'm still surprised by the gameplay out there. Didn't expect us to literally be smacking the money out of enemies with bills flying everywhere. The perfect dodge effect looks very rewarding too.
If available as fully physical release I'm definitely in!
