Dragon's Dogma 2 Patch 3.2 Frame Rate

Patch 3.2 for Dragon's Dogma 2 released overnight, and it's made huge changes to the open world RPG.

The update reworks fundamental bits and pieces of the game, while also improving the user experience in some pretty significant ways. You could argue that it verges on being a kind of re-release.

But the most surprising improvement of all actually has to do with the title's technical performance.

Capcom had said that the patch would include various optimisations, but I don't think anyone quite expected it to provide such massive frame rate boosts in practice.

Across both PS5 and PS5 Pro, Dragon's Dogma 2 now runs far better than it ever has. I've put the game to the test on both systems, and the difference is honestly night and day.

On base PS5, the dedicated Performance mode now hits 60 frames-per-second and actually stays there more often than not, even in crowded, NPC-riddled locations like the city of Vernworth.

Meanwhile, on PS5 Pro, the game's practically flawless with 3.2 installed.

Uncapping the frame rate and turning off ray tracing nets you insanely smooth performance that seems to top 100fps. Keeping ray tracing on still gets you above 60fps — and it's incredibly consistent.

It's worth pointing out that Dragon's Dogma 2 now utilises Sony's upgraded PSSR upscaler. which has no doubt helped in making the game run as smoothly as possible on PS5 Pro, without sacrificing visual clarity.

And if you don't have a display capable of VRR and high refresh rates, you can still hit a buttery smooth 60fps with ray tracing on the Pro. You basically can't go wrong on the more expensive console.

While the title's frame rate woes never rendered it unplayable, they could be frustratingly frequent, and in busy areas, they could make the adventure appear extremely choppy.

Previous updates did improve performance in general, but you could tell that underlying issues with Capcom's RE Engine were holding the experience back.

So when the developer managed to straighten out Monster Hunter Wilds' performance issues, I did wonder whether Dragon's Dogma 2 would eventually get the same treatment.

In short, then, Capcom's engineers have worked a minor miracle here, even if it has taken two and half years to get to this point. Better late than never!

The important thing is that Dragon's Dogma 2 is now fully prepped for the launch of its Dark Arisen expansion in October.
