For years, it's seemed as though the Nintendo Switch was destined to overtake the PS2 in terms of lifetime sales — but right now, it's no longer looking like such a formality.
For the first time since it hit the market, the Switch has failed to break 1 million console sales within the latest quarter, suggesting that the hybrid system has finally fallen off.
Of course, this kind of drop was always coming eventually, with the Switch 2 now Nintendo's priority. But at this stage, such a stall means that the Switch will very likely struggle to top the PS2, which remains the best selling console of all time.
For reference, the Switch now sits at 154 million units — as per Nintendo's own financial report. The PS2, meanwhile, managed a mighty 160 million units.
Sony rather conveniently confirmed that total back in November of last year, just as the Switch was closing in on 150 million.
Still, 160 million isn't an impossible target for the Switch. The system will no doubt shift some solid numbers over the holiday period, and it could easily benefit from factors like permanent price drops in the coming months or years.
But yeah, the trajectory isn't necessarily in the Switch's favour at this point. An additional 6 million sales is a big ask for a console that's almost eight years old and has a successor that's currently selling like crazy.
Do you think the PS2 will ever be caught? Will Sony just pull another 5 million sales out of thin air? Sit back and watch in the comments section below.
