Sports Games Rule PS Store in September, Sweeping Silksong and Borderlands 4 Aside on PS5

Sometimes I wish gaming never left its niche hobby status.

Yeah, a lot of us hardcores just don't understand how big gaming as a whole is. Some of the biggest releases in our circles can be thought of as niche when looking at the big picture.

Also, remember all that Switch 2 hate and calls for boycotting, and a perfectly good rival racer from a huge IP like Sonic isn't even coming close to those Mario Kart World figures. Also wish the Internet would understand how actually small of a voice it has.

@ATaco It's not like sports titles weren't selling gangbusters before the huge demo-shift of the 7th-generation.

Think of it this way: with gaming bigger than its ever been, there's more games, more developers, more voices, and more opportunities.

People here will complain because sports games are selling more than their favourite game. They'll look down their noses at anyone who buys Madden or EAFC because any who buys them isn't a true gamer.

That to me is way more depressing than millions of people buying a genre of game I don't like.

Silksong at number 2 in Europe is fantastic. What an outstanding game.

Yet, my lovely Silent Hill f barely in the top ten is irritating.
Game is great. Buy it guys.

People will hate on others buying only sports games, yet if their underground game starts topping charts, same people would say "ah this game has lost it, it's gone mainstream, it's gone soft.*

Oh I don't think any less of people that buy sports games every year. I just feel pity because they're paying a premium for a roster update and maybe one little patch or two (while oftentimes losing other things in turn). This, Call of Duty...any yearly release that people buy over and over. They deserve better than what they're getting.

This year in particular EA could have possibly lost their contract with the NFL, allowing other developers to try their hand at making an American football game, allowing competition and thus better quality games for the consumer. Though with sales topping the charts like they do every year it won't surprise me if the contract is renewed and we continue to get slop.

@ATaco I really hope another developer gets a shot at Madden. EA hasn't done anything meaningful with it in years, and I'm really not ok with helping to fund human torture and human rights abuses now that the Saudis own them. Would love to see another 2k entry. However, I'm sure you are right about the contract being renewed.

A bit surprising. I expected Silksong to annihilate everything, but I guess the casuals who only play sports games and wait for the latest iteration outnumber the Silksong fans. That, or perhaps it’s down to release timing and Silksong will shoot up next month.

I love soccer and used to buy Winning Eleven / Pro Evolution Soccer every couple of year. But since 2013/14, i never buy soccer or any sports games anymore. I'm still watching soccer though especially my favs club.

Not surprise with sports games obliterate every games sales.

I think this article sort of misses the point. The fact that an indie title’s second ever game is on this list is a HUGE deal. The fact that it is on the same chart as some of the heaviest hitters is probably some of the best news the devs could get.

We all know they are big, we all know they have been around since earliest of PC/console gaming even before they had the licenses or the right player names and all that, we know that sports was a thing with Tennis for Two in the 50s. Doesn't mean we care, but it's always been a thing regardless. As long as gaming is going on sports games will always be there, more then our hardcore games, more or around similar of live service games, and more then cozy games.

I only care for arcadey sports games, or buying motorsport/rally games, I'll get the odd annual F1, MotoGP, WRC, but not regularly I am picky about buying older ones that's it.

We know we have more personality then the people that buy these games every year, but like that matters when it comes to money, those who are smarter buy every 2 or whenever they feel like it anyway and still play more games then those that have just their sports game or COD or AC, or whatever else.

I bought Borderlands 4 and it is so much better than i thought it would be. A great new entry even tho Randy is a fool.

Sports games have been hugely popular since videogames began. In the 2600 days there were the likes of Pong, Realsports Volleyball, California Games, Ice Hockey and Boxing. A bit later in the NES/SMS era there Mike Tyson’s Punchout, Bases Loaded, Double Dribble, Ten Yard Fight, Track and Field. John Montana Football and Blades of Steel.

If one has no use for sports games that is fine but it’s silly to pretend that there hasn’t always been a ginormous appetite for them. It’s increased over time as games have developed the ability to put full teams and distinct players onscreen but it has always been there.

Last but not least as I pointed out in another recent top sales thread what should be important to people who choose to focus on sales is commercial success/profitability not success relative to everything else out there.

If you honestly enjoy a genre you should be happy when a developer in said genre announces the game has met or exceeded expectations and they will continue work in the genre, not be upset that some other game in some other genre outsold it.

I'm not a sports fan really, but I miss snowboarding games. Would love to see a new SSX or Amped I would spend hours on ending playing those and blasting music in my bedroom back in the day. Glad Silksong is doing great though, I love that game.
