Obsidian has dropped a strong hint it will be bringing Grounded 2 to PS5 when the survival sequel leaves early access.

Speaking to Eurogamer, executive producer Marcus Morgan teased an eventual release through a cryptic response to a question surrounding future ports. The outlet asked Morgan specifically about a PlayStation port for Grounded 2, which Morgan smiled at and said:

"Can't talk about that right now. But I will say that Grounded 1 is on all of those platforms so..."

The original Grounded spent around two years in early access, and Obsidian expects a similar timeframe for the sequel. The estimate means PS5 players could be playing Grounded 2 in 2027.

"We don't plan on being in early access forever, but you definitely need the time. We were in early access for Grounded 1 for about two years and that gave us enough time to meaningfully take community feedback and actually adjust the game."

As for how long Grounded 2 will be in early access for, Morgan said it's going to be "roughly that window again, but the appropriate amount of time to make it right".

While the studio is shifting its focus to the follow-up, the first game isn't going anywhere. Again speaking to Eurogamer, it's stated Obsidian has a "strong desire" to preserve its games. "Now, are we going to be doing content and these story expansions to Grounded 1? No, that's the continuation of Grounded 2."

However, maintenance of the original will continue, and there's a desire internally for the game to "always exist. So we'll keep that up; it's not going anywhere if people still want to play Grounded 1 as well." It's just that if you want the all-new story, features, and quests, you'll need to be on Grounded 2 rather than the original.

Obsidian brought Grounded to PS5 and PS4 in April 2024, as part of the first wave of Xbox ports, which also included Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves. That initiative from Microsoft has accelerated to a point where it's assumed most future Xbox games will land on other consoles like PS5, and Grounded 2 appears to be no different.

In our Grounded PS5 review, we awarded an 8/10 score and concluded: "It tests you constantly, but isn't too hard to the point that you want to turn it off. Now that the game has come to PlayStation in addition to other platforms, it's more approachable than ever and a high recommendation for anyone looking for a different kind of experience than the usual."
