It's been announced that the film looking to adapt the story of Silent Hill 2, titled Return to Silent Hill, will release on 23rd January 2026.
The film is being directed by Chrisophe Gans, who is returning to the horror franchise after directing and writing the first Silent Hill flick released back in 2006. In what will be the 20 years in between the two projects, Gans worked on a French adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.
Main character James Sunderland will be played by Jeremy Irvine (Warhorse, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), while it's Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw, X-Men: Dark Phoenix) as Maria.
On the release date announcement, Iconic Events Releasing CFO Mark Rupp reckons the movie adaptation is hitting at the perfect time after the excellent PS5 remake launched last year, and is also set to celebrate "the 20th anniversary of the start of the horror film franchise".
Will you catch Return to Silent Hill in theatres in January 2026? Let us know in the comments below.

Man… Christophe Gans! I remember absolutely loving Brotherhood of the Wolf back around 20 years ago. Might be about time to revisit that actually… might watch the original Silent Hill movie again while I’m at it 🤔
Ahh the good o'l January dumping ground; doesn't inspire much hope. The first film had some gnarly moments but overall was quite dull.
@graymamba wow Brotherhood of the Wolf! I had almost forgotten about that film. May also need to rewatch it!
Absolutely looking forward to this! Others may disagree but the first SH movie was one of the best game adaptations I've ever seen. Yes they changed some things but they respected the look and feel of the games so much it still turned out great. One of my favorite movies to watch still!
Finally managed to Finish SH2 remake two days ago and I was blown away how good yet how dark it was.
I’ll be looking forward to this 👍
@illegalmonkey That is certainly a good thing about the movie, the feel and look was on point. Hope he gets the themes and philosophy right this time because he has potential
@graymamba brotherhood is fantastic , he also did the horror anthology film , necronomicon with Jeffrey combs as lovecraft and the late great, david warner, also great which has aged surprisingly well , with some good practical effects.
It's super nice that's the first silent hill film director return since the sequel isn't as good, the first movie is way better than the second one. I remember watching the original movie on theatre with friends, and the sequel too.
I never understand the reason of releasing horror movie in January. Some were good but most just crap.
But the first SH movie was pretty solid despite it's kinda different compare to the game. So there's hope this movie will have the same quality...
The original Silent Hill movie remains one of the best adaptations of a game series yet. Its possibly the best as they nailed the vibe and didn't try to just recreate a game scene for scene.
The sequel however... jesus that was garbage
That first one was pretty solid! I’m excited 😜
Are the issues on the ps5 pro fixed on SH2 yet ??
A lot of people like the first SH movie but I was really disappointed with it. The main draw for me was how Harry had lost his wife, and since his daughter was all he had left he went through actual hell to get her back. You really felt for the guy. This was completely dropped. Then there were things ommitted that freaked me out in the game, like the phone call in the school, the nurses being toned down, Lisa bleeding, etc. All that was left out. Hopefully this one is better.
I would rather see a brand new story.
If they're just gonna follow the story in the game, beat for beat, then I'm not interested. But if they put a twist on everything, and it goes in a different direction, then sure.
I just hope they give James more of a personality in the movie, as he is kinda dull and boring, in the game.
@JB_Whiting are yall slow? When a film comes out in January doesn’t mean it’s suck and there’s plenty of films that came out in January that be a success and do yall say the samething for video games too?
@wiiware he didn’t do the sequel
@graymamba great movie! If you haven't yet, please treat yourself to crying freeman, another great adaptation by Christophe Gans.
I don't know why, but when people talk about good video game adaptations they tend to forget the first silent hill movie. It should definitely be among the top 5.
I love January because horror movies are abundant. I love the silent hill games. What I didnt love was the first silent hill movie. Hopefully this one is done better because the first one was very rough. Only thing it was missing was treat williams, former king of b rate films.(RIP Treat)
@JB_Whiting I wonder if it's aged well, maybe worth a return but too rat assed to work out where the disc is. Think you're likely spot on though, it was just average. If memory serves didn't it start well then soon as the guys in gasmasks showed it went sideways. Also wasn't Gans in prison for something not an ideal choice for a sequel.
@tameshiyaku There are a top five? Really? The only one I can think of is Street Fighter with the Dammage and Kylie for unintendedly poops and giggles. TV shows maybe TLOS season one I can get behind but movies no way. I can literally not think of one decent video game movie let alone 5.
@Jammer Not counting the ones with completely different plotlines like Sonic and Mario (Although does Mario realky have a plot beyond beat up Bowser?):
-Resident Evil 1
-Silent Hill
-Mortal Kombat (2020)
-Max Payne
-Ratchet and Clank
For me, RE dipped a lot after the first because Alice upstaged Jill very purposely because the director wanted Jovovich to be the cooler character and the movies just got worse and worse anyway.
I also feel Tomb Raider, although being quite different should get an honourable mention, too.
@Ilyn It was good, but it was annoying they didn't connect very well. With a few scene cuts they can work together, though. I watched the second in the cinema and have seen it a couple times since. Atmosphere is very much nailed and FX are above par. I don't get why you'd say it is garbage.
@AtlasLivesAgain it just felt like a very bad B movie student film project. That end fight with pyramid head and the other thing is awful. It's just such a bad film, but that's only my opinion ofc.
Would stick them in any order but The new mario film and sonic film are great. Tomb raider deserves a mention because they were pretty decent. Warcraft story was meh but visually the film was great, they honestly should have just done the Arthas story instead.
Resident evil 1 was okay, not the greatest but I will agree they rapidly went downhill after the original
Edit: Detective Pikachu doesn't really count, but I did enjoy that also 😂
@Muscleblackcop I didn't know the director of the first and second film of silent hill, I only know the first movie is better than the second.
@Ilyn Yeah, fair enough. In some ways it did feel a bit budget, but others not. I really liked seeing the extended cast of enemies, though. My favourite parts are probably the end with the merry-go-round, the mannequin scene and also the asylum. I guess the rest is a bit forgettable, though.
Oh, yeah. I loved the Sonic and Mario movies. The thing is, the Mario movie struck a great balance between recreating scenes and environments from the games and doing whatever it really needed to to be a movie plot with enjoyable characters rather than a game. Sonic went much further and changed the setting entirely to earth, but still remained good. I think the way they did Robotnik with Carey was perfect, right down to his name and nickname.
I also liked Detective Pikachu! However, I do think his gruff voice detracted a little from his cuteness haha
@Jammer yeah, when excluding recent TV animations the list is very slim, though I do think there are lot's of video game guilty pleasures like 90s mortal Kombat, street fighter and live action mario bros. As of recent movies the animated mario movie, gran turismo and parts of the sonic movies were fun.
I don't see any as masterpieces, but I wouldn't go all critical hate train on it all either.
@wiiware ahhh ok
